5 Eastern Kentucky University Department of Communication Proposed Syllabus for COM 799 Independent Study in Communication (1-3 credit hrs) Project Title: Fall 2012 CRN#: Instructor: Dr. Jim Gleason, APR Combs Building, Room 313 Campus telephone Office Hours: Bulletin Description: COM 799 Independent Study in Communication. (1-3) A. Prerequisite: students must select topic and have Independent Studies Proposal Form approved by faculty supervisor and department chair prior to enrollment. May be retaken to a maximum of three hours. Course Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes: COM 799 provides a graduate-level interdisciplinary independent study course within the Department of Communication. Specific student learning outcomes for participants will depend on the subject matter of the individual course or project, and must be described in full in the Independent Studies Proposal Form. Grading: Grades will be earned on the basis of the following elements: Proposal: 20% Research and data analysis: 30% Final product/paper: 50% Final grades will be on the following scale: 90 to 100% = A; 80 to 89% = B; 70 to 79% = C; 60 to 69% = D Student Progress: Students will receive a written grade prior to mid-term grades being submitted (approximately the 6th week of the semester). Attendance Policy: Because this is an independent study course, a regular schedule of meetings between the student and the instructor will be detailed on the Independent Studies Proposal Form. Academic Integrity: If you use content from already-published materials of any kind, generally you have to get permission for such use and give credit to the source. As far as assignments are concerned, you are expected to do your own work. Use of someone else's work constitutes academic dishonesty, and you should see the student handbook for the relevant policies.
