4 For over 100 years, we ve been transforming the lives of young men. Dr. William E. Hatcher, a prominent Baptist minister, founded Fork Union Military Academy in October 1898 with the dream of creating educational opportunities for young people in the Piedmont region of Virginia. At the time, there were no public schools in the area. Dr. Hatcher provided scholarships to hard-working students whose families could not afford The Academy s tuition. From the very beginning, with its first class of 19 boys and girls, the school offered students a well-rounded, liberal arts curriculum firmly based on Christian values. The military structure, and the decision to devote The Academy exclusively to the education of boys in a boarding school setting, arrived early in Fork Union s development. Other important decisions included the adoption of a groundbreaking One Subject Plan curriculum in 1951 along with a program that would cultivate leaders through challenges to the body, mind, and spirit. 7 Today, Fork Union Military Academy provides rigorous education... for grades 7 to 12 and postgraduate to over 400 young men from throughout the US and the world. Our cadets days are filled with traditions, from early morning room inspections and Retreat to Call to Quarters ( CQ ) each evening. Over time, cadets come to appreciate the strict discipline and high expectations upheld in our classrooms and barracks and on our athletic fields. Highly sought-after by colleges, and military academies, our cadets are regularly awarded millions of dollars in scholarships each year. Graduates of The Academy s program include many luminaries in the corporate, media, military and professional sports worlds and many others who are role models in their communities. 8 Called to Lead: The Campaign for Fork Union Military Academy In our parades, it s easy to spot the leaders. They stand out from the crowd. Colorful draped golden cords and medals attest to their achievements in and out of the classroom, as well as their strength of character, self-discipline, and service to others. At Fork Union Military Academy, one of the greatest honors is to be called to lead. Our founder, Dr. Hatcher, heard that call when he saw an oak grove in the Piedmont hills and envisioned our academy. Over the years, others have responded to various calls by donating their time and talents, and funding such capital endeavors as the Jacobson Hall barracks, the Estes Athletic Center, and the J. Calder Wicker Science Hall and Planetarium. Now, a new initiative begins: An ambitious $200 million campaign to assist Fork Union Military Academy s transformation into one of the top independent boarding schools in the nation. Beginning in 2015, the Called to Lead Campaign is reaching out to alumni, parents, and friends who wish to preserve the character-building culture at The Academy while furthering its institutional excellence. The campaign includes bold capital improvements, endowments, and faculty support all guided by The Academy s leading principles of Body, Mind, and Spirit.

10 At the heart of the campaign are three initiatives designed to ensure that Dr. Hatcher s Endowments vision of a world-class center for learning, based on Christian values, lives on in perpetuity.

12 Endowments Access Scholarship Endowment Dr. Hatcher believed in the necessity of providing an education to bright and motivated students, regardless of their ability to pay. To continue his charitable vision, The Academy wishes to create an endowment of sufficient size so that it may provide scholarships to virtually all of the cadets who require financial assistance. Peer institutions, including Woodberry Forest, Milton Hershey School, and Culver Academies are sustained by large endowments. The Academy currently has well over $2 million in unmet scholarship needs. An endowment of $50 million would generate enough financial aid to provide support to most of the students seeking access to the top-notch education offered at Fork Union Military Academy. Goal: $50 million Fork Union s Financial Aid Awards At A Glance $ 12, % Average Award Students Receiving Institutional Aid Over $ 2.5Million Awarded Annually
13 Whitescarver Independence Fund Significant funding is required to support The Academy s faculty and staff and to maintain its infrastructure. The Academy receives no form of public support from the Commonwealth of Virginia or the federal government, and is totally reliant upon revenues generated from tuition and philanthropy to cover its total costs of operation and granting it independence from the state and federal public education policies that are now defining public education in America. Though The Academy carries no debt, having a stable source of investment income from the Whitescarver Independence Fund endowment will ensure that it will remain independent and financially sound for many years to come. Goal: $50 million Endowments Parent Scholarship Enrichment Endowment The Academy manages its limited resources to ensure that each cadet receives a well-rounded, rigorous education that includes academic enrichments such as field trips and opportunities to participate in competitive sports and the performing arts. Providing these opportunities for personal enrichment is critical to our educational mission. Creating a $2 million special endowment, funded by parents, will ensure that every cadet who wishes to will be able to participate in these special, outside-the-classroom activities. Goal: $2 million
14 The campaign seeks planned investments in our facilities, including the building of Capital Improvements new classrooms, high-tech teaching labs, renovations to important existing space, and the addition of two new centers to help us better meet the needs of our cadets, today and into the next century.
15 Improvements to the athletic facilities will continue The Academy s ability to compete on an elite level.
16 Capital Improvements Hatcher Hall Renovations Named after our founder, Hatcher Hall is perhaps the most iconic landmark on campus. It s an image that has symbolized the heart and soul of The Academy for generations of cadets. Hatcher Hall houses administrative offices, including those of the president and other senior staff, as well as classrooms and meeting space. Though structurally sound, to continue serving as a key resource for The Academy, Hatcher Hall needs a major renovation, including upgrades to electrical, plumbing, heating, and HVAC systems. These improvements will allow this beloved building to remain an enduring symbol on campus. Goal: $10 million Improvements to Athletic Facilities Recent studies by the Centers for Disease Control and others have confirmed what many have long believed that participating in middle and high school sports can help students develop a stronger sense of self while improving academic focus, time management skills, and the ability to work with others. Fork Union Military Academy has developed an exemplary national reputation for its team sports programs, and many of our cadets have gone on to compete at an elite level. Our alumni include 70 players signed or drafted by the NFL, two Heisman Trophy winners, seven NBA players, three MLB players, and five track and field Olympians. On average, The Academy sends 30 to 60 athletes from our high school and postgraduate teams to NCAA Division I college programs each year on athletic scholarships. Goal: $23 million
17 Proposed improvements would include organization of the campus core around historic Fraley Circle.
18 Capital Improvements Wicker Science Building Renovations The US became a global leader through the ingenuity of its scientists, engineers, and creative minds. At the heart of these advancements are the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). To remain competitive in these areas, Fork Union Military Academy seeks to upgrade its instructional technology and renovate its teaching and laboratory space in Wicker Science Building. Such modernization is necessary for The Academy to create and offer cutting-edge STEM curriculum and hands-on learning experiences for the cadets. Goal: $3 Million New Body, Mind, Spirit Center During their time at The Academy, cadets learn that their bodies, minds, and spirits are interconnected and require equal attention. A new facility will be devoted to the nurturing of these three critical areas. The centerpiece will be a workout space, designed to encourage lifelong health and fitness for cadets not involved in competitive sports. At the Body, Mind, Spirit Center, cadets can take part in wellness programs created to help them reach their true potentials by improving their relationships with God, self, and others. Goal: $10 million
19 New Leaders of the Future Center Since its beginning, Fork Union Military Academy has defined itself as a place where young men are given an exceptional education, including the teaching of values to help them build and define their unique character. The Academy challenges its cadets to view leadership not solely as a role or a position but as a desirable quality achieved through their personal actions. The Leaders of the Future Center will be a place where young men will learn how to integrate enduring values such as honesty, integrity, and humility into leadership roles. The new center will be led by an exceptional scholar, instructor, and gifted mentor who will join the faculty in a senior leadership capacity and whose position will be funded by an endowed professorship. The facility will hold classroom and learning laboratory space as well as a Learning Resource Center. Our wish is for cadets to leave The Academy possessing the character, courage, competence, and conviction necessary to lead and impact our society in positive ways. Goal: $11 million Capital Improvements New Performing Arts Center Designed as a flexible, multi-use venue, the new performing arts center will be available to both campus and community groups. This state-of-the-art center will allow The Academy to host more musicals, concerts, family programs, and multicultural events, with the goal of enriching the lives and learning experiences of our cadets as well as members of our community. Goal: $20 million
20 The success of our cadets would not be possible without the support of our devoted and Faculty Support highly talented teachers. Our campaign offers endeavors planned that will provide additional support and recognition to faculty.
21 Additional Faculty Housing & Renovations Most of The Academy s faculty live on campus year-round and serve not only as instructors for the cadets but also as their mentors, tutors, and chaperones. Many of The Academy s senior faculty members have been a part of our staff for more than two decades, providing stability and consistency in the educational model for the cadets. Creating improved and additional housing will help The Academy recruit and retain the best and brightest Christian teachers in America. Goal: $11 million Faculty Support Endowed Professorships Recognizing Teaching Excellence Endowed professorships can help The Academy recruit and retain superior faculty. Our vision is to create five $2 million named, endowed professorships to recognize Fork Union Military Academy teachers for past and potential contributions to their academic disciplines and to the school s mission. In addition to the academic honor given to the individuals, the endowed professorships will provide funding to support their teaching and service responsibilities. Goal: $10 million Great teachers equal great results: 100 % of our graduates are accepted into college.
