2 HAVE I MET ALL THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CSU/UC? You must meet the A-G Requirements, including: 4 years college prep English 3 years math (through Advanced Algebra) 2 years college prep laboratory science 2 years college prep social science

3 HAVE I MET ALL THE REQUIREMENTS? 2 years of the same foreign language 1 year visual and performing arts 1 year elective *You must have successfully completed these classes with a C or better. *For JHS a foreign language counts for a visual and performing art. However, it does NOT for the CSU or UC. *Different requirements exist for private, historically black and trade/technical colleges and universities.

4 HAVE I MET ALL THE REQUIREMENTS? If you are planning to attend a UC, you must have a 3.0 or higher GPA (sophomore and junior year grades). If you are planning to attend a CSU, you must have a 2.0 or higher GPA (sophomore and junior year grades) Also, you must meet the eligibility index. The higher your GPA, the lower your test scores can be. Example: if you have a 2.0 you must get a 1300 on your SAT Verbal/Math combined or a 30 on the ACT.

5 KEEP TRACK OF DEADLINES Take the SAT and the ACT by the end of your junior year If student does not plan to apply to any UC campus they can take just the ACT without the writing option If applying to the UC s, depending on your major, they may recommend that you take an SAT Subject test in a certain subject if taking math it must be Level II All testing must be completed by December of senior year (some colleges want them by October) Go to for SAT and to sign up for the ACT You will apply to CSU s (Oct-Nov) and UC s (Nov). Private schools and other colleges and universities are up to you to find out the deadline date

6 California State University Register Oct 1-Nov 30 $55 per campus (fee waivers available online) Must apply separately to each campus Using code 3594 (also may say CSU Mentor, Long Beach) on the SAT will send scores to all 23 CSU campuses No personal statement or letters of recommendation required!

7 University of California Apply Nov 1-Nov 30 Can start working on online application Oct. 1 $70 per campus fee waivers available online One application for all campuses Personal statement required By choosing just one UC on your SAT all UC s will have access to your scores (remember you get to send 4 for free)

8 California Community College (MJC) Take a class in summer or sometime during senior year to receive priority the $46 per unit fee is waived while in high school but you must have an Advanced Petition form signed from JHS During spring of senior year take math/english assessment tests and attend an orientation at MJC SAT/ACT tests are not needed if you will receive an associates degree and transfer to 4-year college

19 NCAA If you are an athlete, and are planning to play at a Division I or Division II college or university, you need to get cleared through NCAA (they check to make sure you have taken the right classes and have test scores that are high enough to meet their criteria). Go to

21 COLLEGE VISITS 3 days of approved absences for campus visits Take a tour with an admissions rep, sit in on a class, speak to the students, eat the food, look at the dorms, speak to department chair Start now! If you are going on vacation and are near a college, tour it

22 Housing It is extremely important that you request a spot for housing early to the colleges that you may want to attend There are many different choices for housing (apartment style, dorms with many students, suites, etc)

23 PERSONAL STATEMENT The UC campuses require each applicant to write two personal statements. Keep in mind that the admissions folks read thousands of personal statements. You want the reader to get a clear picture of who you are. Start working on personal statement now and ask people who don t know you well to read it. If there is something the UC s need to know that is not addressed in the application, your personal statement would be a good place to discuss it.

24 PORTFOLIO Keep your portfolio handy and up-to-date including activities, community service, awards, test scores, employment history, etc. This will make it much easier when filling out college applications and scholarships

25 LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Give your teacher, counselor, or employer a copy of the letter of recommendation sheet located in Career Center Allow at least 2 weeks Waive your right to see the letter (private school applications) Get to know a few teachers well so they can share personal information

26 SCHOLARSHIPS Money does NOT grow on trees! Must actively seek out scholarships through a variety of places Collegiate Outlook (go to JHS website and look under the counseling section) Parent employment Internet sites Colleges and Universities This is a good site to look for scholarships however, it s generally not until your senior year that most of the scholarships become available

27 SUMMER PROGRAMS There are a variety of summer programs you can attend (many that will give you college credit) Come to the Career Center to see what is available

29 Last Bit of Advice Remember you have worked hard throughout high school and whatever college you end up choosing, as long as it s a good fit for YOU, will be the right choice!!!!

30 BEWARE OF SCAMS!!! There are many companies sending out letters to students to listen to their presentation for free What you don t find out until later is it will cost you between $900 and $1,400 to sign up for the services that we offer for FREE You will know it is one of these companies because in the letter it will state that the presentation is on a Saturday or Sunday and you must call their toll free number with the personal reservation code provided Some companies are now making phone calls stating that your son/daughter has received a scholarship (want bank account information)
