1 UNIVRSITY OF LINCOLN JOB DSCRIPTION JOB TITL DPARTMNT LOCATION Principal Lecturer School of Chemistry Brayford JOB NUMBR COS139 GRAD 9 DAT October 2014 RPORTS TO Head of School CONTXT The new School of Chemistry at Lincoln is central to the University s strategy to extend its provision in STM subjects. The School s development (alongside the new School of Mathematics and Physics) is being primed by a 6.8m award from HFC s Catalyst Fund and strategic University investment in infrastructure. The School builds on a tradition of applied chemistry at Lincoln, hitherto focused at Forensic and Analytical Sciences, and forms a key component of the College of Science alongside the Schools of Computing, ngineering, Life Sciences, and Pharmacy. An innovative undergraduate curriculum has been developed through widespread consultation with graduate employers and industry partners, and the University will welcome its first cohort of chemistry undergraduates in September 2014 to MChem and BSc programmes in Chemistry and Forensic Chemistry. These students will take their place alongside its established undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts in Forensic Science. JOB PURPOS To provide academic leadership within the School across the portfolio of programmes, particularly by developing its impact with external stakeholders (e.g. academic and industrial partners, prospective students and their advisors). This may be complimented with leadership of the development of one or more sub-disciplines in chemistry. To contribute to the development and management of the School and engage more widely within the Institution through College activities and an effective contribution to the wider mission of the University. 2 KY RSPONSIBILITIS The responsibilities of a Principal Lecturer are wide ranging and may change over time according to the development needs of the School and the individual. In general a Principal Lecturer can expect to undertake any of the following: Teaching and Learning Support To engage in teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate level programmes as determined by the Head of School. The range of teaching duties may change from time to time. Develop the depth and breadth of teaching activities of the School through expertise in one or more areas of chemistry and by implementing new and innovative teaching and learning methodologies and assessment techniques that will enhance the quality of teaching and learning. Lead on the design and development of new or existing programmes and ensure that they are enhanced by current research and professional practice. stablishing significant interaction /collaborations with external bodies will be a key aspect of the role. Research and Scholarly Activity Make a significant contribution to the research profile of the School and College and pursue a personal research programme consistent with the School s research themes. Provide leadership in research within the School and collaborate in research activities and initiatives with colleagues within and beyond the School. Secure funding to support research projects and provide management of the resulting projects. Sustain professional recognition by significant contribution to debates on national and international issues and/or by sustaining a track record of research disseminated in peer reviewed outlets. Develop research programmes with sufficient scope to provide outputs of suitable quantity, standard and theme to be returned in the RF (or its future equivalent). Actively contribute to a collaborative research environment that maximises the opportunity for the research success of the School. Contribute to peer assessment of research in national and international contexts. Liaison and Networking Lead strategic programmes for engagement of key external stakeholders and provide academic oversight for areas including student recruitment and schools liaison, industry liaison and employer engagement, funding panels and professional bodies, and strategic academic collaborations that influence the external profile of the School. Liaise with and develop internal networks, for example by chairing and participating in institutional committees. Page 2 of 6

3 Lead, develop and contribute to external networks, professional, national or international bodies such as Research Councils, Higher ducation Committees and high level advisory groups. Interact and collaborate with other internal departments and faculties and external institutions and bodies on the establishment of joint research projects or to enhance the quality of teaching and learning or other academic endeavour. Team Working Work as a member of the School management team to contribute to the development and management of the School. Provide academic leadership within the School over a subject area, a range of courses or programmes, an area of research or significant academic endeavour. Contribute significantly to the development and running of the School by taking on appropriate co-ordinating or leadership roles. Supervise or line manage other staff as appropriate. Act as mentor or appraiser to designated colleagues, advising on personal development and ensuring that they are meeting the standards required. Student Support Act as academic tutor to students as allocated by the Head of School and act as first line contact for them for advice and support on academic matters, ensuring that students are directed to relevant support services when necessary. Supervise research degree students as appropriate. Supervise student projects and placements as appropriate. Other Contribute to the wider mission and reputation of the University. ngage in appropriate training programmes in the University. Actively follow and promote University policies. Participate in the staff appraisal scheme. In addition to the above, undertake such duties as may reasonably be requested and that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post. Page 3 of 6
