12 NIHR/CNO Masters in Clinical Research 70 funded places p.a. Full salary costs and course fees (not a studentship) Qualitative + quantitative research skills, research management. /cat/masters Places would be advertised by the institutions.

13 NIHR/CNO Clinical Doctoral Research Personal Award for PhD research whilst still committed to developing clinical skills. Need both a good academic and a good clinical supervisor Full salary, training and development. Research costs at 100% NHS, 80% HEI. (HEI also receive specialist support, and indirect costs e.g. estates, research facilities at 80%). 3 years FT (4 or 5 years PT). Register at university for PhD. Base at an English NHS Trust or other healthcare organisation or University.

14 NIHR/CNO Clinical Lectureship Postdoctoral level award for academic research and clinical practice (50:50). Not a personal award- nominated by a partnership of NHS trust and HEI one is the host employer 50% of salary and max 30,000 towards research, training and development costs. 3 years FT (4 or 5 years PT). Panel selection no interview. Need to show commitment to return to/continue clinical practice. Need to have shown good research output from PhD, good research proposal and have minimum of 1 year clinical experience.

15 NIHR/HEFCE Senior Clinical Lectureship Senior (pre-chair) 5 year award Partnership of NHS and HEI- so 2 nominees, not a personal award Funded by Higher Education Funding Council for England 50% of salary (max. award 50,000 p.a.) 3 annual rounds with up to 4 awards each year (max 12 total) Expected that host institution will support nominee after the award > 5 years clinical experience excellent or exceptionally promising record of: clinical / academic / leadership / publications / grant applications

Know the process and the remit: Look at the Website Read the Guidance Notes Then contact the NIHR TCC if any queries Common Weakness- Failure to show that the research addresses important areas for the NHS, producing results that are likely to generate significant and quantifiable benefit for NHS patients within 5 years of the funding period

Internal peer review, Mock panel Research Design Service Other websites, other applications and peer review comments Common weaknesses- Research questions not clear, don t show the relevance of the aims and objectives. Unrealistic or failure to justify budget and requested resources 3. Time and checking: Give yourself enough time must meet the deadline Are all the questions answered, Clear language, grammar, spelling, do the references in text match the list

22 4. Collaborations, training and support: Must have the appropriate multidisciplinary involvement in the research team Must have a clear career vision, training plan and support
