1 VANCE WALL ART EDUCATION CENTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS MONTCLAIR ART MUSEUM Led by MAM docents and/or educators, gallery tours are available for visitors from preschool to college and beyond. Select a theme from our list, or contact us for a program tailored to fit the needs and interests of your particular group! Please make reservations 4 weeks in advance. You can also schedule a self-guided group visit, but reservations are required and general group visit guidelines apply. School programs at MAM are aligned with the Common Core Standards as well as the goals laid out by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills and promote literacy and evidential reasoning, content knowledge and critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. MAM invites students and teachers to look closely, find clues, and solve puzzles become engaged with an artwork, in a debate discover connections between facts and feelings, art and life be inspired to create their own stories and artworks feel empowered to find their own place at MAM VANCE WALL ART EDUCATION CENTER Welcome to the Vance Wall Art Education Center! The vision of the Center is to enrich MAM s service to the community through partnerships and innovative programs that encourage all ages to connect with the world around us through art. 3 Program Themes All tours are adaptable for 2nd grade and up; starred themes are suitable for preschool and up. Native American Art* Explore Native American society and culture, past and present, by examining functional, ceremonial, and art objects. Using your Senses* Get a unique, multisensory perspective on artworks in MAM s galleries as you experience art through your eyes, ears, and fingertips. Facetime: Exploring Portraits* Who is that person in the painting? What clues can you find about their interests, status, or personality? How has the way artists depict people changed over time? Look closely to discover! Places and Spaces: Landscapes in American Art* Explore MAM s collection to discover the many different ways in which artists have engaged with the evolving American landscape and built environment inside and out. Color, Shape, and Line* Explore how artists have used the building blocks of painting and sculpture in works spanning different times and places. Modern Viewpoints Discover modern and contemporary art at MAM! Learn how 20th and 21st century artists have used innovative materials and processes to put a new spin on what art is and can be. Art and Philosophy What makes something art? Engage in a lively philosophical conversation pondering the meaning, role, and value of art in the context of works on view at MAM. MAM Highlights Celebrate MAM s collection with an interactive tour of works by American artists from different times and places, working in a range of genres and styles. Current Special Exhibitions See something new! Take an engaging tour of a current exhibition! Program Formats Gallery/Studio (2nd Grade Adult) 2 hours An hour-long, theme-based gallery exploration is complemented by 60 minutes of art-making in MAM s art studios. Designed for students in grades 2 through 12, the hands-on project enhances and reinforces concepts learned through object-based discussions in the galleries. KidzArt (Preschool 1st Grade) 1 hour KidzArt invites young children to engage in a developmentally appropriate, multimodal learning opportunity which combines close looking and discussion, movement, storytelling, and art-making. Children will spend 30 minutes engaging in a playful, open-ended conversation in MAM s galleries. An art-activity in the studio inspires children to respond creatively to what they saw and experienced. Choose a starred theme from the list at left. Look & Write or Look & Sketch Gallery Activity (2nd Grade Adult) 1.5 hours Complement your gallery-based discussion with a related (creative) writing or sketching activity. Please specify interests when scheduling. All materials are provided by the Museum. Youth Perspectives: Classes participating in this program get a behindthe-scenes perspective of the Montclair Art Museum. Students will learn about how exhibitions are developed and how to interpret works of art and will develop their own interpretive materials in the form of labels, audio tours, or videos, which will be accessible in MAM s galleries and will provide a public forum for adolescents emerging voice. The MAM Art Truck Schools can now book the MAM Art Truck, a roaming art studio in a retrofitted ice-cream truck for single or multi-visit art workshops focusing on mural art, mask making, media arts, and other subjects. Artist in Residence Programs: MAM is pleased to bring teaching artists to area schools for multi-week residencies during which students will collaborate on large-scale art projects. Fostering creativity, communication and decision-making, as well as technical skills, projects can be tailored to the needs and interests of individual schools and may focus on life drawing, mural-making, claymation, digital media arts, raku ceramics, or team sculpture, to name a few.

Bring pieces of original work and receive feedback on your visual art portfolios from college art school admission officers. Please bring 12 to 20 pieces of original work including sketchpads, if available. You may bring work in any medium including clothing, jewelry, and sculpture if you can carry it. If you wish to show your digital work, bring your own laptop as well as an additional battery. 15th Annual Conversation on Education and the Arts Peter Reynolds Thursday, November 16, 7 p.m. $12 members/$15 nonmembers/$5 student with ID Peter Reynolds acclaimed picture books Ish, Dot, Sky Color, North Star and most recently Happy Dreamer encourage children to follow their individual creative paths. The author/illustrator and creativity guru will talk about his work and how the conviction that creative thinking is the fuel for getting things done has guided his own career. Educators earn 2 hours of PD credit. Book signing to follow in partnership with Watchung Booksellers Scholastic Art Awards: Northern New Jersey Region Submission Deadline: Wednesday, January 3, 2018 (postmark date) Award Ceremony & Opening Reception: Thursday, February 15, 6 9 p.m. Creative teens in grades 7 through 12 are invited to submit their artwork in a range of media for consideration in the 2018 Scholastic Art Awards. MAM serves as the sole New Jersey affiliate of the nationally acclaimed awards program, which identifies and recognizes teenagers with exceptional artistic talent and offers opportunities to gain national recognition and scholarships for their work. For information and submission requirements, visit MAM Annual High School Lecture: Dan Fenelon Friday, February 23, 11 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Additional optional artist-led workshop 1 2:30 p.m. $10 per person for lecture only (teachers are FREE with school groups) $20 per person lecture and workshop MAM s Annual High School Lecture series invites prominent artists to share their insight with teens contemplating creative careers. This year, MAM will feature Dan Fenelon, whose signature urban tribal style is instantly recognizable on murals at the Montclair Library, Luna Stage in West Orange, and at many schools across the country, where he has worked with students of all ages. Trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Dan works in a range of media, from acrylic on canvas to 3-D printed figurines and larger-than-life sculptures. Dan is also the operator and resident-artist of the MAM Art Truck, which has brought him into many communities throughout NJ to engage a wide range of audiences in interactive art making. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CREDITS The Vance Wall Art Education Center presents a wide variety of programs bringing artists, performers, and scholars to the Museum on a regular basis. Professional Development Credits are also offered for all adult studio classes and workshops in the Yard School of Art.
6 Educator Resources Teacher Workshops MAM s education department offers half or full-day staff development for teachers from NJ school districts on subjects ranging from life drawing, ceramics, or portfolio development to inquiry-based learning, arts integration, and more. Call for a program tailored to your needs and interests! MAM Educator Guides MAM Educator Guides provide teachers with questions, ideas, and materials for facilitating inquiry-based, open-ended dialogues with students of all ages in preparation of your visit or as a follow-up. They are available online at montclairartmuseum.org/educator MAM Educator Advisory Committee Composed of teachers from a range of subjects and grade levels, the Educator Advisory Committee aims to serve as a key link between MAM and the local teaching community. Committee members reflect on best practices in art and museum education and become a sounding board for MAM education initiatives, resources, and programs.
