The family passes were a delightful surprise and much appreciated! 4th grade teacher WALDORF SCHOOL About the Crocker The first public art museum founded in the Western United States, the Crocker Art Museum was established in 1885 and is one of the leading art museums in California. The Museum offers a diverse spectrum of special exhibitions and programs to complement its collections of Californian art, works on paper, European art, international ceramics, photography, Asian art, and African and Oceanic art. The Museum has also dedicated the historic building s entire first floor as an Education Center, including four classrooms, a student and community exhibition space, the Gerald Hansen Library, and Tot Land. The Crocker s Teachers! Education is essential to the Museum s mission, and YOU are integral to our success. Open to all educators, the Educator Membership provides benefits designed with you in mind. For only $50/year, this membership option includes a connection with all the Crocker has to offer: discounts on professional development opportunities, plus special educator-only deals and promotions! Of course, your Educator Membership also entitles you to all the regular benefits of membership at the Crocker, including free admission to the Museum year-round. Enjoy music, films, lectures, and hundreds of activities that are free or offered to members at a reduced price. Look for the for Educator Membership discounts! To expedite booking, please include your contact information, preferred date and time of program, and number of students. To receive the group rate, reservations must be made at least four weeks in advance. If needed, scholarships must be requested at time of booking. Those with Educator Memberships will receive first notice of special programs and offerings. Free Family Pass Each student that participates in one of the Crocker s school programs receives a complimentary Family Pass, which enables a return trip to the Museum free of charge for up to five people. 3 Come to the Crocker Our School + Teacher programs offer a full range of experiences to spark creativity and critical thinking. They support the California State Content Standards in a variety of subject matter, for multiple grade levels, with an emphasis in visual arts. Museum Tours Tuesday Friday, 10 & 11 AM; minutes. Alternate times based on docent availability. Maximum 70 students per hour; one chaperone required for every eight students. $2 per student in Sacramento County, $4 if visiting from outside of Sacramento County. Take Art Apart Grades K 12 Learn the elements of art through focused observation, questioning, and group discussion of 2-D and 3-D works of art. Crocker All Stars Grades K 12 Enjoy an intro to the Museum with a tour of the Crocker s collection highlights. California Canvas Grades 3 12 California and its history come alive through artwork from the past and present. A Global Lens Grades 3 12 Students interpret the history, culture, and creativity of people around the world through art. Art In America Grades 6 12 Discover how 21st-century artists creatively use materials to probe personal, social, and political issues. Special Exhibition Tours Richard Diebenkorn: Beginnings, Available October 8, 2017 January 7, 2018 Join us for a look at the early work and evolution of noted American painter Richard Diebenkorn. Explore landscapes, semiabstract and Surrealist-inspired depictions, and Abstract Expressionist paintings along with related selections from the Crocker collection. Female Artists Leading the Way: E. Charlton Fortune, Faith Ringgold, and Corita Kent Available February 25 April 22, 2018 We invite you to learn about trailblazing female artists on view in three special exhibitions. E. Charlton Fortune: The Colorful Spirit features Impressionist paintings of the Monterey landscape. Faith Ringgold: An American Artist showcases paintings, prints, and soft sculptures. Power Up: Corita Kent s Heavenly Pop includes vibrant silkscreen prints featuring advertisements, literature, and everyday imagery. Museum Tour + Workshop Tuesday Friday, 10 & 11 AM; two hours. Maximum 35 students per hour; one chaperone required for every eight students. Required chaperones free, additional chaperones $6 per person. Four-week advance registration required; all materials are included. Tour + Studio Collage Grades 1 12; $275 per workshop A resident teaching artist will guide students to explore materials, texture, and layering through artistic collage, demonstrating knowledge of the elements of art and principles of design during a close study of Abstract Expressionist artwork in the Crocker collection. G Tour + Chihuly s Color Garden Grades 3 12; $275 per workshop After exploring glass artworks in the Crocker collection, join a resident teaching artist in the studio for a closer look at American artist Dale Chihuly, and make a mixed-media masterpiece inspired by the artist s use of color and form. G Tour + Sketching Grades 3 12; $175 per workshop Look, learn, and practice basic sketching techniques with one of our resident teaching artists. G Tour + Writing Grades 4 12; $175 per workshop Take inspiration from art and establish your own poetry and prose. A lot of my kids said that this was their favorite field trip! Tour + Performance: B Street Theatre Tuesday, May 8, 11 AM & 12 PM; 90 minutes; $8 per person Back by popular demand, B Street Theatre s Fantasy Festival, featuring professional actors presenting a series of short plays written by kids, will be paired with an equally enchanting art tour. For Early Learners A is for Art Pre-K and K (Ages 4 6); 1st & 3rd Thursdays, and 2nd & 4th Tuesdays; 10 AM, 11 AM or 1 PM; minutes. Alternate times based on guide availability. Maximum 35 students per hour; one chaperone required for every six students. $2 per student in Sacramento County, $4 if visiting from outside of Sacramento County. Required chaperones free, additional chaperones $6 per person. Thanks to First 5 Sacramento, a limited number of scholarships are available for groups in need. In this specially designed tour, early learners build educational and social skills through playful and fun art explorations. Tour + Art Workshop: A is for Art Pre-K and K (Ages 4 6); $275 per workshop; 1st & 3rd Thursdays and 2nd & 4th Tuesdays; 10 AM, 11 AM or 1 PM; two hours. Our teaching artist will lead young learners through a discussion about art, group exploration, focused play, and a hands-on art project. G or we ll come to you! The Crocker offers a range of programs that provide students the opportunity to learn through high-quality, interactive programs taught in the school classroom. Community Art Night 90 minutes; $875 per school site Ignite the creative spark in your students, parents and educators during this fun, fair-like evening designed to build a positive and unified school community. You provide the space and tables and we ll bring everything else, including interactive stations and hands-on art activities. This all-inclusive event is fun for all ages and artistic abilities. G Artist-to-Go 90 minutes; $225 per class; maximum 35 students per class; discounts available for multiple bookings Provides students with the opportunity to learn about art through an interactive, hands-on art project. All materials are included. CREEPY, CRAWLY, CREATURES: After hunting for bugs in works of art, students will learn how to employ line, shape, color, and pattern to make their own mixed-media critters. G WATERCOLOR CHEMISTRY: Students experiment with watercolor paint and a variety of solvents at discovery stations guided by a teaching artist. It s explorative and fun at the same time! G POP-APART SCULPTURE: This workshop starts with a look at sculpture from the Crocker collection, with a focus on form and abstraction. Students will then create a pop-apart slot sculpture, decorated with colorful motifs and constructed to explore balance and symmetry. G Crocker-to-Go Grades 3 6; 60 minutes; $30 per class; maximum 35 students per class Trained docents engage students with an interactive, multi-media presentation of artwork from the Museum s collection. Students learn strategies for looking, reading, and thinking critically about a work of art. LEARNING TO LOOK: Learn the elements of art through focused observation, questioning, and discussion of 2-D and 3-D works. DISCOVER THE CROCKER: Enjoy an intro to the Museum through a selection of the Crocker s collection highlights. CREATIVE CALIFORNIA: California and its history come alive through artwork from the past and present. ART AROUND THE WORLD: Students interpret the history, culture, and creativity of people around the world through art. G Homeschool Day: Ceramic Love Tuesday, February 13, 2018; 12 2 PM (drop-in) After touring ceramic masterpieces in the Crocker s collection, take to the studio to make a pinch pot heart, perfect for gifting to your favorite valentine. G Homeschool Day: Art of Stenciling Tuesday, March 13, 2018; 12 2 PM (drop-in) Inspired by the silkscreen prints of Corita Kent, students study the principals of design through the artistic opportunities of stenciling. Charlton Fortune, a trailblazing female artist whose work will be on view in the special exhibition E. Charlton Fortune: The Colorful Spirit. Try your hand at Fortune s Impressionist style with a visit to the studio. Educator Soiree Thursday, September 14, 2017, 6 8 PM; Free for educators Held in conjunction with ArtMix CrockerCon, the Educator Soiree is the perfect combination of mingling, music, and art, with just a touch of professional development. The region s premier cultural organizations will showcase their offerings for grades K 12. Along with chatting with local vendors and each other, enjoy live music, performances, and art activities. Teacher Workshop: Richard Diebenkorn: Beginnings Saturday, November 4, 2017; 10:30 AM 12:30 PM; $5 members, $12 nonmembers Join us for an in-depth look at the work and evolution of noted American painter Richard Diebenkorn. Explore early pieces, nearly all from the collection of the Richard Diebenkorn Foundation, as well as curriculum materials that will help you bring Diebenkorn s work into your classroom. Teacher Workshop: One-Day Art Projects Marathon Saturday, April 14, 2018; 10 AM 4 PM; $60 Crocker and CAEA Members, $80 nonmembers; lunch included Yes, it s back! This ever so popular mini-conference focuses on low-cost, one-day art projects presented by a panel of experienced classroom teachers, teaching artists and Museum educators representing a range of grades and artistic focuses. G Teacher Workshop: Paintings by Eduardo Carrillo Thursday, July 12, 2018; 10:30 AM 1:30 PM $5 members, $12 nonmembers Eduardo Carrillo s artwork has been described as mystical, realistic, surreal, and visionary. His imagery, whether grounded in the everyday world or infused with magical realism, reflects his relationship to his native California and to his Mexican heritage. Participants will tour the exhibition and explore themes represented in related works from the permanent collection, as well as engage in strategies and activities that can be used in the classroom. G Custom-designed Workshop $350 and up Let the Crocker customize a professional development or team building experience for your group. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, developing creativity with Common Core, art process workshops, art of the Gold Rush, or STEAM integration. Our team of professional Museum educators will work with you to create a customized experience, at your site or the Museum. Think Tank: An arts-based professional learning community This sequential program invites a small group of teachers from the greater Sacramento region to learn with us over the course of the school year. Participants will gain techniques for analyzing and interpreting art, practice object-based teaching strategies, and work together to create lesson plans and content for using art in interdisciplinary explorations.
