3 Course Introduction Art and Design History is an exciting discipline which encompasses the study of visual artefacts, museum and gallery practices and the production and circulation of meaning around art and design. The Art and Design History course provides a systematic understanding of art and design practices and theories with a strong emphasis on critical thinking. Art and Design History students at Liverpool Hope University are partly taught alongside Fine Art and Design students. Another distinctive element of this programme is the curriculum which covers key developments in art and design history from Antiquity to the present day. Furthermore, students in the second and third year will take Professional Practice for Art and Design History. These courses look at theoretical approaches to museology, as well as more practical considerations such as conservation, exhibition planning and design, curatorial practices and educational activities. Art and Design History students work closely with those from Fine Art and Design, writing exhibition catalogues and wall labels. This means that students gain practical experience of working in related fields and professionally published writing. Exclusive partnerships with National Museums Liverpool and Tate Liverpool and close collaborations with FACT and Bluecoat Gallery and Display Centre offer privileged access to important collections in Liverpool and experts working in the field. There is also the possibility to participate in overseas study tours in recent years the department has visited Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bilbao, Milan, Paris, Florence, Venice, Berlin and New York. Art and Design History is strongly supporting the idea of the Collegium which is at the heart of Liverpool Hope University: an academic community of scholars providing a nurturing environment to stimulate and foster the scholarly advancement of all its students, working with and through them to create participants of learning (rather than recipients of learning) and to engender personalised learning (rather than mass teaching). 3
4 What you will study The three year programme consists of taught lectures and seminars, student-led tutorials, site visits, professional practice elements, special study preparation and the special study. Students will study a core art and design history course, exploring key developments in ancient, medieval, early modern, modern and contemporary art and design. This will be complemented by courses on specialised topics informed by the research of art and design historians at the department. Furthermore, there will be professional practice projects and special study preparation, culminating in the special study itself. Assessment methods vary but include learning portfolios, essays, a textual analysis, exams, project work and a special study. Level C (Year One) Themes and Issues in Art and Design History 1 and 2 (Antiquity to late 19th Century) Themes and Issues in Art and Design History CLOSE UP Art and Design: Historical and Contemporary Practices. Level I (Year Two) Themes and Issues in Art and Design History 3 (early 20th Century to the present day) Art History Lecture (specialised topics informed by the research of art historians) Design Lecture (specialised topics informed by the research of design historians) Professional Practice Special Study preparation. Level H (Year Three) Advanced Museum and Gallery Theory and Practice Aesthetics and Critical Writing Seminar Research Project: Special Study Museum and Gallery Lecture. 4
5 Employability and Career Opportunities Liverpool Hope University has an exclusive partnership with National Museums Liverpool and Tate Liverpool. Student placements in those institutions and other local, national and international art organisations can be arranged. The Department of Fine and Applied Arts also offers Three postgraduate programmes, the MA Art History & Curating, MA by Creative Practice and MA Museum & Heritage Studies. Alumni of Liverpool Hope University are entitled to a generous discount package on postgraduate fees. Studying history of art and design affords the opportunity to develop skills of critical thinking and analysis, academic writing, visual research strategies and interpretative skills. It is a versatile subject which produces critically astute and visually aware students. Art and Design History provides a broad range of transferable skills as well as the possibilities of diverse career options, such as work in museums and galleries, publishing, the media, marketing, advertising, education and community work. 5
