This year s annual studio tour, which will be held the weekends of November and November 29 through December 1, will provide ample opportunity for the more than 10,000 visitors to get up close and personal with their favorites. The self-guided Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour calls for art lovers to do a little driving so they can drop in on studios in Cave Creek, Carefree and Scottsdale to get to know the artists in their own environment. Participants can choose between 167 artists and 46 studios, creating the perfect opportunity to watch the artists in action, visit and purchase art from them directly. The range and diversity of artwork is another reason Hidden in the Hills is so popular with art lovers. There will be all kinds of art created as well as art on display during the tour. It will range from painting and sculpture, to pottery, gourd making, mosaics, photography, mixed media and more. Admission is free and studios are open to the public from 10am-5pm each day. Eight artists will return for their 17th year in the event, and nearly 40 artists will participate for the first time. Artists Virginia Brooks (oil), Judy Darbyshire (ceramic), Katalin Ehling (batik), Morrie Elmer (wood), Dick Mueller (pencil), Carole Perry (glass), Robin Ray (ceramic/acrylic/watercolor) and Valentine (metal/ bronze) have participated in the tour every year since The studio tour began as a home grown affair with local artists inviting their family, friends and neighbors, explains Ray. Several of us were doing home shows for the holiday season and thought working together instead of competing with each other would be a more positive experience. Jewelry artist Allena Mistral is looking forward to her first year in the event. After seeing my parents show in Hidden in the Hills for so many years, I decided that I wanted to share my art with the world, she explains. Seeing people come out to support the artist community is wonderful. Also part of this year s Hidden in the Hills Artists Studio Tour and Sale is the Youth Art Studio 1 Exhibition where artwork from local students in grades K through 12 will be on display from November 14 through December 3 at the Desert Foothills Library. The fifty exhibiting student artists were selected from the 100 entries in the Sonoran Arts League s juried Celebration of the Arts exhibit held at Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center last spring.
