3 Message from the President Wow, we just finished Jurying for the Holland Gallery Exhibit ART in partnership. Boy, what an art competition this turned out to be! With space for only 50+ pieces and submissions around 200, the competition was fierce. Well, that is what we were shooting for. We wanted it competitive; we wanted it top notch. With our strategy of using smaller venues to create top-quality art exhibits, we want to create an image that, when you are viewing an Arizona Art Alliance art exhibit, you are looking at some of the best. We desire our shows to be known as limited, diverse, and high in quality. Why not?... when we have an array of such talent within our ranks. Man, I will tell you, when I took a look at the entries, it was just amazing the talent that exists within our Alliance! There was so much good work presented that the actual jurying must have been daunting. How do you choose? What is going to be accepted when you know from the beginning so much worthy art is not going to get in? I am so glad that I did not have that job. But when you see the final show, as it is put together, you too are going to be WOWED! Oh, by the way, I want to mention that we had 12 non juried members who had work accepted to our Holland Gallery show. Two of those members had 2 pieces accepted. Not Bad! You Betcha, competitive. Congratulations to those artists that were chosen. Take pride in knowing you scored well in a very tough competitive field. Boy, as an artist, we must have thick skins in order to survive in an environment that contains so much quality. Know that even if you weren't accepted into this show, you belonged in this group. We could have had a fabulous exhibit showing the art that was not chosen. As artists, your willingness to participate knowing how tough it was going to be, is appreciated and to be commended! Also, coming up October 31, is the WHAM Festival of the Arts. For those of you who don't know, WHAM is one of our Member Leagues and they have been hosting this event for the past three years. It has grown steadily. The Arizona Art Alliance has been invited to participate and to add to the event by offering an even greater art presence and an opportunity for artists outside of WHAM to take part. Our presence is limited however, because there is limited space. Then again this opportunity is not a fit for many of our members; but for some it is an ideal opportunity. We are constantly looking for opportunities to offer our 3D artists. Many times these opportunities are limited for a variety of reasons. We represent so many great artists that specialize in jewelry, ceramics, glass and other 3D mediums and the WHAM event is conducive to these endeavors. We are offering 12 spots within our tent to show off these mediums. Of course, the 2D mediums are welcome also. This is a non-juried event.so you artists that have not gone through the Jury process are also eligible to display, show, and sell. We will have the site pretty much ready for you to bring in what you need to finish off your space. This will include a sales tax umbrella you can use for your sales tax responsibility to the city of Goodyear. This will save participating artists the trouble of procuring the proper sales tax licensing on their own. If you enjoy the great Arizona outdoors, wish to expose your art to a nice big crowd, and want more information about being a part of this Festival, go to azartalliance.com/event/4th-annual-art-is-alive/ for all the details, rules and entry form. We are also fortunate to have booked a Show next March 2016 at the WHAM Gallery in Surprise. This venue will give many of our artists a chance to show off their work in the west part of our Valley. March is a great month for attracting tourists and the West Valley certainly gets its share with all the baseball fans visiting. The Show will take place the entire month of March 2016 and will only involve a 10% donation to the Gallery. We plan for this Show to also be very competitive. There is a limited amount of space because of venue size, but the space is conducive for both 2D and 3D artwork. Be on the lookout in Fall 2015 for our Call to Artists and other details for this exhibition. Speaking of 3D art, I have some great news. Our Summer Show 2016 in the Vision Gallery in Chandler has been expanded. Not only will this Show have a plethora of 2D art, but we have a rare opportunity to show off our JEWELERS and other 3D mediums as well. I know you re thinking..a Summer Show.that's the slow time. 4 Continued from page 3 Alliance News opportunity here. This venue normally offers onemonth Shows, but we are getting two months. Also, our presence in the city of Chandler is not very strong and this gives us an opportunity to show that community what we are made of. Most of all, it gives us a chance to build a relationship with a growing vibrant city that places a high value on local art and its artists. There will be two venues for this Show that we have the opportunity to use for our exhibit. Both are "sweet". One is the Vision Gallery, which will house the Jewelry, Sculptures, and some 2D; and the other venue is the Gallery at the Chandler Center for Performing Arts. This venue is located inside, in a separate space, and is visible from the lobby of the Theater. The visual art gallery is also the location where tickets are purchased so there is a good flow of consistent traffic to show off your work. If we are able to fill both venues with quality artwork, there will be two receptions, cross promotions and other marketing activities to bring the different aspects of this unique opportunity together. The city of Chandler and the Vision Gallery are poised to help us build a Summer Art Event that appeals to our local population and provides an art experience in a Valley that traditionally abandons the arts during our off season. We feel that, with virtually no competition or other art activity, there is still plenty of interest in the arts that can build this exhibit into something that is meaningful and unique. As one can see, the Alliance is not abandoning its desire to host quality exhibit events. I would like to address the MOST important element in the making of a QUAL- ITY exhibit. It is no secret that there are many art exhibits throughout the Valley and many of them are quite good. It is a very saturated and competitive market, not only for the venues to hold these events, but there is also a large amount of quality artwork itself that exists in our community. We are lucky to have an Alliance with such a great number of very talented artists. But this, in itself, is not enough. We, as artists, must continually hone our skills and how we represent our work in order that we may compete in the "art marathon". What does this mean? Well here are a couple things worth considering: 1. You should use only the best imagery possible when submitting your work for the Jury process. Looking at our last Call, it was clear that some good art was not considered because the digital photo imagery presented was NOT of high enough quality to give the art a fair judge. If you are going to do your own photography to capture your work, do some research to find out how to make a professional presentation to submit to a Jury Committee and increase your chances of being accepted. 2. SHOW NEW ART; KEEP WORKING AND PRESENTING NEW WORKS. Don't NOT get accepted to a Show because the piece you are presenting has been seen by that Jurist a hundred times at different shows for the past two years. The people that Jury get around and they see a lot of art in a lot of different places. If they see only old works from you with no new work coming in, they will dismiss you. They want to see new and unfamiliar work. We all know that it's hard to keep the WOW, when something becomes too familiar. Just ask my wife. We will talk on these issues later. I just want you all to know that the Alliance will continue to work to provide our members with new, quality opportunities to show their work and to tell who they are as artists. And with the assistance and partnerships from our Member Leagues, I think we have a pretty good start in making all of us better artists. Arizona Art Alliance Changes for the League Representative Meetings The Az. Art Alliance will be changing League Representative Meetings to once every quarter instead of monthly. The Board of Directors for the Alliance will still meet monthly as usual and on the last meeting of the quarter (every three months) we will invite the League Representatives for that month's Board Meeting. That meeting will be abbreviated so as to allow time for any Rep that has questions or wants to address the entire Board or any of its members. All of our Board meetings are open to any rep any time they want to attend. There will just be no formal invitation or Rep Meeting the first two monthly meetings of any quarter. Our next meeting with the Reps will be Friday, July 17th at 9:30 am at our Tempe Headquarters. Don't worry, we will send out a reminder and the coffee will be on July ENRICHING LIFE THROUGH ART

9 Alliance News Art The Journal of the Artist Marilyn was born in Fargo, North Dakota, and arrived in Phoenix in She and her four children, six grand children and great grand daughter all live in Phoenix, Arizona. Presently, she prefers water color, and her themes include travel, still life, animals and nature. Exhibits include Arizona Art Alliance, Phoenix Artist's Guild, and The NASH, a jazz venue on first street and Roosevelt in Phoenix. She has a BS in Education from ASU, and has studied with Raleigh Kinney, Walter Powell, Dick Phillips, Ellen Jean Diederich and also at the University of Nevada at Reno. 11 Alliance News For 40 years the Sonoran Arts League, a non-profit organization promoting art, artists, and art education through leadership and service in the belief that an artistic awareness is essential to the wellbeing of life and our community. Our vision is to be the premier art organization that supports and serves our community by nurturing a culture of creativity through education, events, and activities that connect the arts to the human spirit. Formed in 1975 as the Cave Creek Craft Council, the organization s more than 520 members actively participate in community outreach programs, youth mentoring and art education. The League produces several events, such as the annual Hidden In The Hills Artist Studio Tour and Sale and the yearly Sonoran Festival of Art, and partners with the Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center on the annual Empty Bowls Project. In addition to its long history, the League has initiated several new programs this year, including a statewide K-12 art contest available to all public, private, charter and home school students; and a resource and support program for art teachers at area schools. Call or visit us online at YOUTH ART & EDUCATION With a special focus on mentoring youth, the Sonoran Arts League fosters artistic growth in the following ways: Youth art and scholarships: the League recognizes the artistic abilities of young artists and awarded scholarships to graduating seniors from local high schools pursuing studies in the arts. Incentive awards: the League recognizes schoolchildren who show exceptional interest in art and awards them with incentive bags filled with art books and supplies at the annual Celebration of Art at the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center. 18 Out Reach Programs Your Community Outreach Programs at work Lee Anne Park Arizona Art Alliance Outreach Monthly Art Activities Collages at Opportunity House Summer Art Program Avondale In June, nineteen children attended the Summer Art Program class on collages. They put cut-outs on art board with, what Nancy Hampton calls, the ever messy Mod Podge. They used different colored papers to create color harmonies and some used cut-out pictures of their favorite sports activities, pets, etc. to create a personal theme. Lots of self expression and lots of fun. Other activities at Opportunity House include sports, games, crafts, music and more. Over all more than 30 children were in attendance to all the activities. Many thanks to the NFL Players Association for their generosity for all the programs that provide a free, safe, place for underserved children in the Avondale area. And, Thank You, Arizona Art Alliance members, for your support in making sure that the Opportunity House Art Program is funded throughout the year. Opportunity House Art Program Changes Art League West has dissolved and have generously voted to donate remaining funds to the Alliance for Outreach Programs. We thank them all very much for their long-time support. Desert Artists group is now supporting the Opportunity House Art Programs under the continued leadership of Nancy and Jack Hampton (both new, and welcome members of the Desert Artists). We thank the many volunteers that help make this a fun, educational and safe-haven for these children during the school year and for the summer sessions. 19 Continued from page 18 Out Reach Programs Desert Artists Extra Special Art Carefree, Cave Creek and Scottsdale Summer Catch Up and Plan Ahead Caring Thru Art Paradise Valley Desert Artist Extra Special art is in the planning stages for the new school start-up in August. The number of classes and the number of students has doubled over the past year. Classes are weekly. We expect over 10 students in the Life-Skills class and an unknown additional students from the Positive Learning Center at the Middle School. There will at least that many and more at the High School Special-Needs classes. That adds up to about 36 classes, including field trips for the students. While mentoring classes go on during the summer months, Desert Artist volunteers are working hard to make the upcoming special-needs classes come together for 2015 and Mr. Valicenti and his loyal volunteers of the Desert Sage Artists continue to bring the joy of art to the Life Care Center residents as always. Our dedicated 90 year old has been continually providing these art classes for over 20 years. As soon as he returns from his trip to France we will have more wonderful news to report on the activities of this excellent community outreach program. May we all be so fortunate to be able to give so much for so long! Veterans Programs all over the valley Our Veterans Programs Manager, John Fontana, never rests. He has his own column and information in the Newsletters about all the wonderful work these programs are doing. The four programs now under way (with potential fifth program soon to be started) that are benefitting so many of our veterans. John and his management team of volunteer advisors, teachers and aides are working very hard to continue these programs even in the face of difficult financial setbacks this year. ANGELS GIFTS As you know, we lost artist and long-time supporter of the Art Alliance this year when Pat Gellenbeck passed away. We grieve for her loss. Her husband, Dan, has generously donated many art supplies to the Alliance for the Community Outreach Programs. Dan and Alan Arne have delivered these many supplies to our Outreach Office in Tempe. We thank both of them for all they have done to support the Alliance in all its endeavors. These supplies will help our veterans programs and our outreach to special children and life care residents. After inventory is made, I will be sharing the information with the Program leaders and assist in dispersing to the various programs. 20 Veterans Outreach Program A Veteran Art Based Program Addressing the Invisible Wounds of War Intro to Natalia s July Newsletter article Healing Power of Art Natalia Hughson is Psychiatrist, Collage teacher, an artist, published author and an Alliance Veteran Outreach Advisor. She brings professional insight and support to the importance art can have as a means of helping to deal with many mental stressors. Natalia s article enlightens and encourages the use of art while sharing some of her past experience as a Psychiatrist and as an artist. 21 Continued from page 20 Veterans Outreach Program Healing Power of Art Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one. ~Stella Adler Unpleasant memories, responsibilities, pressure, burden, and unmet needs escort day-to-day life, mounting up, causing stress and stress-related diseases. Struggling with the everyday act of living, people always search for some relief. A long time ago it was recognized that art has a healing power. Even severely mentally disturbed people benefit from being engaged into the process of creation. Psychiatrist and Psychologists use it widely as a Therapy. I don t want to call it a Therapy, but painting and creating art is an excellent distraction from whatever is causing stress or anxiety. Many prominent scientists, inventors, politicians were artists as well. To have reached the age of forty without ever handling a brush or fiddling with a pencil, to have regarded with mature eye the painting of pictures of any kind and not be discouraged by results, is an astonishing and enriching experience. Those are words of one of the most powerful man of his time Winston Churchill who started painting at the age of forty and was regarded as a talented artist. Experiencing art by creating it or by perceiving it as a spectator allows people to forget about whatever is troubling them, their failures and mistakes and fly in a world of fantasy and imagination, living in a new universe of colors and shapes with silent music, dancing lines, and talking texture. Obstacles, frustrations, disappointments, melancholy are forgotten. The creation of art brings feelings of excitement and delight, near-meditative state where the track of time is lost. Standing in front of a blank canvas, holding a brush and arranging paint, anticipating a miracle of creation is like being in a sacred sanctuary. I am a Ukrainian Psychiatrist. In the Ukraine, I used art as a Therapy for my patients. I am using art myself for relaxation and stimulation, for enjoyment and gratification. The easiest and the most exciting theme for my paintings are flowers. I invent them with bizarre outlandish shapes and colors. I give them dynamic postures, I make them to look almost like people, I give them emotions and make them laugh or cry. I put them in various settings, in vases, in the forest, or on rocks. You don t need to be experienced or talented, just start placing colors on paper or canvas, connect them with lines that look like stems and add leaves. I cannot guarantee you will create a masterpiece, but I can promise that you will have great enjoyment and pleasure that will make you happier and more successful in your life.
