WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT (808) ( SERVICES) Virginia Nary 1977 Kaohu Street Hawaiians, American Indians, or native Alaskans (18 years or older) who are unemployed seven consecutive days, underemployed or economically disadvantaged Workplace (on-the-job training) 9 th grade through adult Classes, on-the-job training Monday-Friday: 8:00a.m.-4:30p.m. Classroom training, on-the-job training, community service employment, and work experience programs prepare unskilled adults for entry into the labor force. Job training is afforded to those economically disadvantaged individuals and others facing serious barriers to employment who are in special need of training to obtain productive employment.

Offender/Ex-Offender Project (808) (Maui Services) David Kamiyama 1977 Kaohu Street Honolulu office Unemployed ex-offenders and soon to be paroled incarcerated inmates Workplace (pre-employment) 7 th grade through post-secondary Tutoring, classes, workshops Monday-Friday: 8:00a.m.-4:30p.m. The project assists individuals who have been incarcerated to make a positive transition into the community through pre-employment workshops, employment counseling, employment or classroom training, placement, and follow-up services. On Maui, services are provided at the Maui Correctional Center.

The program includes vocational and pre-employment services. The goal is to provide inmates with basic life and work-related skills in order to get and retain employment upon release.

Services include diagnostic evaluation, training, placement, employment, and other rehabilitation services to help the disabled attain their full potential.
9 105 KAHULUI PUBLIC LIBRARY 90 School Street (808) Kahului, HI Helen Kahn New mothers Family Literacy <3 rd grade through adult Packets of information Monday-Friday: 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (subject to change) This program is funded by a grant to provide packets of information to new mothers in the hospital. These packets include a fact sheet on why to read to children, library information, a growth chart, an article on the importance of reading to your child, and a free book to read to a child. In addition, upon request the Maui Programs Coordinator will do presentations for groups on the importance of reading to children. At press time, funding was expected to cover services through the first quarter of 1993.

Wakea Ave. Regional Manager Kahului, HI Children (three and four years old) Language and literacy Preschool Classes Vary by classroom Vary Kamehameha s Maui Preschools serve three- and four-year-olds and operate at three locations. The program prepares children for kindergarten and emphasizes language and literacy, family involvement, and the importance of Hawaiian culture.
11 154 CATHOLIC CHARITIES Ka Hale Ake Ola Resource Center (808) Waiale Drive (808) Residents of the Ka Hale Ake Ola Resource Center (formerly this was the Maui Homeless Shelter, before 2/93) Reading, Writing, Math, Life Skills, Family Literacy <3 rd grade through 8 th grade Tutoring, classes Monday-Friday: 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m. (office) Shelter is open 24 hours a day As families enter the shelter, a case worker evaluates their total needs. If literacy assistance is part of the need, it is provided through the life skills classes held at the shelter. Both children and adults are helped in this program.

After taking a placement test, students are recommended to take specific classes.

To assist students, professional staff, peer tutors, and student assistants are available in TLC.

The program is offered on Molokai and Maui and a partnership on Lanai.

The student and tutor decide how often and where to meet and together determine the content of the lessons. Services are free and confidential.

Upon successful completion, a student receives a high school diploma from the Hawaii Department of Education. Students meet in small group classes.
