4 Dickenson County Public chools High chool Course Descriptions DEFINITION tandard Unit of Credit The standard unit of credit for graduation is based on a minimum of 140 clock hours of instruction and successful completion of the requirements of the course. Verified Unit of Credit A verified unit of credit for graduation is based on a minimum of 140 clock hours of instruction, successful completion of the requirements of the course, and a passing score on the end ofcourse tandards of Learning test for that course. A state approved substitute test may be used for specified OL tests. tudent elected Test A student selected test for verified credit may come from any end of course OL test that is not already satisfying a required verified credit or tests in computer science, technology, or other areas as prescribed by the Virginia tate Board of Education. equential Electives equential electives are defined as study in a focused sequence of elective courses leading to further education or preparation for employment. tudents who are pursuing the tandard Diploma or the Modified tandard Diploma must complete two sequential credits. Weighted Credit Honors courses, advanced placement (AP), and Governor s chool classes provided substantially greater rigor and challenge than other courses, and students that take these courses are rewarded with additional quality points when grade point averages (GPA) are calculated in 12 th grade. 4

5 Dickenson County Public chools High chool Course Descriptions GRADUATION REQUIREMENT The requirements for a student to earn a diploma are those in effect when the student enters ninth grade for the first time. The tandards of Accreditation require that students take tandards of Learning end of course (EOC) tests, or approved substitute tests, in specified courses in English, mathematics, science, and history/social sciences. Courses requiring a tandards of Learning EOC test are identified in the course description section of this handbook. There are three diploma options for students graduating in 2016: tandard (see page 6 7) Advanced (see page 8) Modified tandard (see page 9) Local Math/Numeracy Requirement Dickenson County Public chools requires students to pace the completion of math requirements in their plan of studies so that every student is enrolled in at least one math course each year in the same way that required English courses are taken one each year. The goal of this local requirement is to ensure that all students will have developed strong literacy and numeracy skills upon graduation from Dickenson County Public chools, skills that will enable them to be successful in work and life beyond graduation. This local requirement does not increase diploma requirements but means that students will take an English course and at least one math course each year. In grade 11 or grade 12 students may satisfy the requirement with completion of Economics/Personal Finance (#6120) instead of a course designated as Math (course codes in the 4000 range). Economics/Personal Finance (#6120) is a diploma requirement for students that entered 9 th grade in 2011 and beyond and will meet the local math/numeracy requirement along with a minimum of 3 VDOE approved math courses but does NOT replace any of the math requirements. tudents that meet the minimum graduation requirement for math prior to grade 11 or 12 must still meet this local requirement. NOTE 5 For students entering the ninth grade for the first time in through : A student may utilize additional tests for earning verified credit in computer science, technology, career and technical education or other areas as prescribed by the Board in 8 VAC For students entering the ninth grade for the first time in and beyond: A student may utilize additional tests for earning verified credit in computer science, technology, career and technical education, economics or other areas as prescribed by the Board in 8 VAC NOTE 6 tudents who complete a career and technical education program sequence and pass an examination or occupational competency assessment in a career and technical education field that confers certification or an occupational competency credential from a recognized industry, or trade or professional association or acquires a professional license in a career and technical education field from the Commonwealth of Virginia may substitute the certification, competency credential or license for (1) the student selected verified credit and (2) either a science or history and social science verified credit when the certification, license or credential confers more than one verified credit. The examination or occupational competency assessment must be approved by the Board of Education as an additional test to verify student achievement. NOTE 7 For students entering the ninth grade for the first time in and beyond: Pursuant to ection :4, Code of Virginia, credits earned for this requirement shall include one credit in fine or performing arts or career and technical education. 7

Guidelines for credit accommodations have not yet been issued by the Virginia Board of Education. Electives for tandard or Modified tandard Diplomas equential Electives Effective with the graduating class of 2003, students who wish to receive a Modified tandard Diploma must successfully complete two sequential electives. o equential electives may be in any discipline as long as the courses are not specifically required for graduation. o Courses used to satisfy the one unit of credit in a fine arts or career and technical education course may be used to partially satisfy this requirement. o An exploratory course followed by an introductory course may not be used to satisfy the requirement. o An introductory course followed by another level of the same course of study may be used. o equential electives do not have to be taken in consecutive years. Fine Arts and Career and Technical Education The tandard, Advanced tudies, and Modified tandard Diplomas each contain a requirement for one standard unit of credit in Fine Arts or Career and Technical Education. The tandards of Accreditation do not require that courses used to satisfy the requirement of Fine Arts or Career and Technical Education be approved by the Board. Therefore, local school officials should use their own judgment in determining which courses students take to satisfy this requirement. 9

10 Dickenson County Public chools High chool Course Descriptions DIPLOMA EAL tudents who demonstrate academic excellence and/or outstanding achievement may be eligible for one (or more) of the following awards: Governor s eal for Advanced tudies Diploma The Governor s eal for Advanced tudies is awarded to students who complete the requirements for an Advanced tudies Diploma with an average grade of B or better and successfully complete collegelevel coursework to earn 9 transferable college credits in Advanced Placement or dual enrollment. Virginia Board of Education eal for tandard Diploma The Board of Education eal is awarded to students who complete the requirements for an Advanced tudies or a tandard Diploma with an average grade of A. Board of Education's Career & Technical Education eal The Board of Education s Career & Technical Education eal is awarded to students who earn a tandard or Advanced tudies Diploma and complete a prescribed sequence of courses in a career and technical education concentration or specialization that they choose and maintain a "B" or better average in those courses OR pass an examination or an occupational competency assessment in a career and technical education concentration or specialization that confers certification or occupational competency credential from a recognized industry, trade or professional association OR acquire a professional license in that career and technical education field from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Virginia Board of Education s eal of Advanced Mathematics and Technology The Board of Education s eal of Advanced Mathematics and Technology is awarded to students who complete the requirements for either a tandard or Advanced tudies Diploma, satisfy all of the mathematics requirements for the Advanced tudies Diploma (four units of credit including Algebra II; two verified units of credit) with a B average or better, and either (a) pass an examination in a career and technical education field that confers certification from a recognized industry, or trade or professional association; (b) acquire professional license in a career and technical education field from the Commonwealth of Virginia; or (c) pass an examination approved by the Board that confers collegelevel credit in a technology or computer science area. The Board of Education shall approve all professional licenses and examinations used to satisfy these requirements. Virginia Board of Education s eal for Excellence in Civics Education The Board of Education s eal for Excellence in Civics Education is awarded to students who complete the requirements for either a tandard or Advanced tudies Diploma, (1) complete Virginia and United tates History and Virginia and United tates Government courses with a grade of B or higher, and (2) have good attendance and no disciplinary infractions as determined by local school board policies and, (3) and complete 50 hours of voluntary participation in community service or extracurricular activities. 10

11 Enriching Your High chool Experience To encourage students to enrich their high school educational experience and to increase the rigor of the high school program the following choices are available: The Advanced Placement (AP) program, offered by the College Board, enables students to pursue college level studies while still in high school. AP offers students the opportunity to participate in a rigorous curriculum that exposes students to high academic intensity and quality. Based on their performance on AP Examinations, students may earn college credit. tudents in the AP track should take advantage of pre AP/Honors courses; both AP and Honors courses are weighted because of academic rigor. tudents in AP classes are expected to take the AP exam. The exam fee is approximately $85 per test. Financial assistance is available for economically disadvantaged students. ee a school counselor for more information. Dual Credit may be earned for courses taken on the college campus. Credit appears on both the high school and college transcript. tudents who pursue this option do so in order to add an enriching and rigorous course to their high school program of study that is not available at the high school or have a special circumstance. tudents must obtain permission from the school principal/designee, prior to enrollment, to ensure appropriate high school credit for the college course. The student is responsible for the expenses associated with any course. Dual Enrollment offers the student credit through either outhwest Virginia Community College or Mountain Empire Community College, as well as high school credit, for courses offered during the regular school day at the high school. The student must complete the necessary entrance requirements for WCC or MECC and have principal approval. Course offerings vary from year to year. ee your school counselor for more information. Most Dual Enrollment/Credit courses taken follow the grading scale of the college and do not accrue weighted credit for GPA calculation. tudents are responsible for 10% of the cost of tuition for dual enrollment/dual credit courses. tudents pay a small share of the tuition for these courses, currently 10%.. Elite Learning is a program of online courses serving the students of southwestern Virginia. Elite Learning is a part of the outhwest Virginia Education and Training Network (VETN), and provides a variety of asynchronous dual enrollment course allowing students to receive both high school and college credits from the same coursework. The courses are challenging, demanding, and exciting! Linwood Holton Governor s chool uses sophisticated distance learning and Internet based telecommunications technologies to deliver an advanced curriculum especially designed for gifted and talented students in their home schools and fills a unique need in a very innovative way. tudents from 42 high schools use "state of the art" LearnLinc software to attend classes, listen to lectures, participate in discussions, complete lab activities, etc. from their school, home, or almost anywhere. Virtual Advanced Placement chool (Virtual Virginia) is facilitated by the Virginia Department of Education. This school offers a variety of Advanced Placement courses, enabling students to earn college credit, regardless of their high school s ability to offer college level courses. Courses are available through satellite and Internet video streaming or online. There is a tuition charge for some courses. High schools must have a facilitator on hand to proctor tests, provide help and support to students, and forward information to the instructor. Courses pursued through this method are those courses that are not offered at the high school. Information on specific course offerings can be found at Governor s enior Year Plus: Early College cholars Agreement This is an agreement in which students can qualify for the Early College cholars program. The student must: Have a "B" average or better; Be pursuing an Advanced tudies Diploma or an Advanced Technical Diploma; and Take and complete college level course work (i.e., Advanced Placement, or dual enrollment) that will earn at least 9 transferable college credits. Early College cholars are supported by Virtual Virginia and the Commonwealth College Course Collaborative. Virginia Virtual chool provides statewide access to college level courses while the Commonwealth College Course Collaborative defines the subjects high school students can complete and receive college degree credit from participating public and private colleges and universities. 11

Course #: H1130 Course Name: Honors English 9 (Pre AP) Credits: 1 (weighted 0.5) Prerequisites: Teacher Recommendation Grade Levels: 9 Diploma: tandard, Advanced Brief Description Instruction for students in Honors English 9 will follow the Virginia tandards of Learning for English 9 covering oral language, reading and writing. Writing instruction will include additional standards established by the DCP writing curriculum. Expectations for students in honors classes exceed those for students in non honors classes of the same title, and as a result of the higher expectations, students in honors courses receive the equivalent of 0.5 quality points in final GPA calculation. Course #: 1135 Course Name: Intervention Writing Credits: 1 Prerequisites: OL Grade 8 Writing cores <400 Grade Levels: 9 Diploma: tandard tudents whose performance on the Grade 8 OL Writing test indicates significant weakness in writing skills will be assigned to this course as an intervention and preparation for the EOC writing test, which is required for graduation. Course #: 1145 Course Name: High chool Writing Credits: 1 Prerequisites: English 9, 10 and teacher recommendation Grade Levels: 10, 11, 12 Diploma: tandard Instruction in High chool Writing will take the next step in preparing students for written communication in real world settings including the workplace. The goal of this course is to ensure that all students not only meet the requirements to pass the EOC Writing test but also meet employers expectations for written communication. tudents may also take this course as remediation if the student has taken and failed to pass the EOC Writing test. 13

Writing instruction will include additional standards established by the DCP writing curriculum. Course #: H1150 Course Name: Honor English 11 Credits: 1 (weighted 0.5) Prerequisites: English 9, 10, AP Lang./Comp. Grade Levels: 11 Diploma: tandard, Advanced Honors English 11 is more rigorous than English 11, going beyond the Virginia tandards of Learning for English 11 and includes heavy emphasis on American literature and writing in preparation for AP Literature & Composition. Expectations for students in honors classes exceed those for students in nonhonors classes of the same title, and as a result of the higher expectations, students in honors courses receive the equivalent of 0.5 quality points in final GPA calculation. Course #: 1160 Course Name: English 12 Credits: 1 Prerequisites: English 9, 10, 11 Grade Levels: 12 Diploma: tandard, Advanced Instruction for students in English 12 will follow the Virginia tandards of Learning for English 12 covering oral language, reading and writing. Course #: 1171 Course Name: Creative Writing Credits: 1 Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation Grade Levels: 9, 10, 11, 12 Diploma: tandard or Advanced Creative Writing is a writing intensive elective English course geared to students with a strong interest in creative writing. Course #: 1195 Course Name: AP Literature & Composition Credits: 1 (weighted 1.0) Prerequisites: English 11 (Honors English recommended) AP Lang./Comp. Grade Levels: 12 Diploma: Advanced The AP English Literature and Composition course is designed to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students can deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. AP Literature & Composition conforms to the guidelines established for this course by the College Board. tudents are expected to take the AP Lit/Comp exam. Course #: 1302 Course Name: Advanced peech Credits: 1 Prerequisites: peech Fundamentals, teacher recommendation Grade Levels: 10, 11, 12 Diploma: tandard or Advanced Advanced peech is an elective English course in which students expand and develop their skills in public speaking and critical listening. This course prepares students to compete in forensics (although not required). Course #: DE 1600 Course Name: DE English (Elite) Credits: 1 Prerequisites: English 11, Teacher recommendation, principal approval, minimum score on college placement test Grade Levels: 12 Diploma: tandard or Advanced tudents that successfully complete dual enrollment English will earn 6 hours of college credit through the local community college for college composition (English 111 and 112) in addition to high school credit for English 12. The level of rigor for this course is the same as at the college and follows a syllabus approved by the college. This dual enrollment course follows the 10 point college grading scale and is not otherwise weighted in GPA calculation.
