4 GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE WEB A complete copy of this booklet is on the web at and additional information on ESL, GT and Pre-AP courses is on our district website: GENERAL INFORMATION SPECIAL EDUCATION Students must meet certain criteria and be placed by an Admissions Review & Dismissal Committee (ARD Committee). REGULAR Regular courses provide students with the opportunity to take subjects that will advance learning in core subject areas. These courses are sufficient for most postsecondary institutions, as well as, career-bound students. PRE-ADVANCED PLACEMENT Middle school Pre-AP courses are preparation for Advanced Placement (AP) courses at the high school level. High School AP courses are equivalent to freshman college courses and are extremely rigorous. Middle school Pre- AP courses are in preparation for these classes and are also more rigorous. COURSE SELECTION AND CHANGES If a student believes that he or she has been incorrectly placed in a class, a request for change may be made to the counselor s office and will need principal approval. Approval of schedule changes will be for educational purposes and in the best interest of the student after parent and teacher conferences. Students and parents must give the selection of courses much consideration and careful thought. The master schedule and teacher hiring are based on student course selections; any changes greatly affect the total budget and must be completed prior to the end of each school year. From time to time the courses offered will be re-evaluated because of class size and interest. If a course you have requested is canceled, the student s alternate choice will be selected. A student will be assigned to a STAAR remediation class(es) if the student s STAAR performance is below the state standard of passing. GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM Gifted and Talented students can progress beyond the regular school curriculum. Students are provided services through designated GT or pre-advanced placement classes. Courses are offered in all core academic areas of math, science, social studies and English. The curriculum in the designated courses is taught by certified GT teachers and differentiated for identified gifted students to provide greater depth and complexity in content, process and product. Students also have the option to participate in credit by acceleration and instruction in a subject area(s) above grade level when advanced ability is demonstrated. Students may be nominated for the GT program throughout the school year by teachers, counselors, parents, peers, other interested persons or themselves. 5 GENERAL INFORMATION AVID Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) AVID is a college preparatory program which seeks students with a GPA who desire to improve and have the motivation to prepare for entrance to a fouryear college or university. Applicants who meet eligibility requirements will be interviewed prior to placement in the program. AVID will be available at all three middle schools. To obtain an application, contact the AVID sponsor at your student s middle school. Students must complete an application and go through the interview process to be eligible for the class. Preparing for High School As students choose courses for middle school they take the first steps in planning for their graduation day. More and more high school credit courses are being made available in middle school. The school has a number of courses that will qualify for high school credit. As the students progress through high school they will appreciate the credit courses they were able to take during middle school. Students can receive college credit for courses taken in high school in the Advanced Placement, Concurrent Enrollment and/or Credit by Articulation programs. Additional information about high school courses may be obtained by calling Belton High School at At time of this printing, the State of Texas is in the process of adjusting graduation requirements for the school year. High school counselors will be explaining the changes during the registration process. Contact your school counselor if you have any questions regarding high school scheduling. Promotion and Retention Guidelines Belton ISD may not grant social promotions. Students may be promoted only on the basis of academic achievement and meeting state-required attendance guidelines. In grades 6 8, promotion to the next grade level shall be based on an overall average of 70 on a scale of 100 based on course-level, grade-level standards (essential knowledge and skills) for all subject areas and a grade of 70 or above in three of the following areas: English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. In order to be promoted to grade 9, students enrolled in grade 8 must perform satisfactorily on the Mathematics and Reading section of the grade 8 assessment in English in addition to meeting the subject area requirements listed above. 4

6 6th GRADE PROGRAM Required Courses 6TH GRADE PROGRAM The following courses are part of the required program for sixth grade students. All students will be placed at the appropriate level according to previous scholastic grades, standardized achievement test scores and ability scores. Pre-Advanced Placement - Pre-AP courses are designed for students who are preparing themselves to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses at the high school level. These AP courses, normally taken during the junior and senior years, are the equivalent of freshman college courses and are extremely rigorous. The middle school Pre-AP courses are preparation for these college-level courses and are therefore also very rigorous. Placement in Pre-AP courses is based upon prior academic and/or testing performance. Elective Courses A student will be assigned to a STAAR remediation class(es) if the student s first 5th Grade STAAR performance is below the state standard of passing. Sixth graders must select one (1) course from the following electives to complete their course requirements. See the Course Description section for an explanation of each course. Sixth graders must choose 2 (two) semester credits or 1 (one) full year credits from the electives below to complete their course requirements. 7 6TH GRADE DESCRIPTION OF COURSES 6TH GRADE ELECTIVE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS GADGETS & GIZMOS Grade Level: 6th Semesters 1 Students will construct and test a variety of gadgets and gizmos from solar cars and catapults to bridges and towers in a hands-on approach to exploring science concepts. Students in this project-based course will be evaluated on their ability to meet performance goals with the models that they build. The successful students will be selfdirected, able to work in cooperative groups and able to perform basic math calculations. A composition notebook will be required for this course. The class is paired with Study Skills. STUDY SKILLS Grade Level: 6th Semesters 1 Students will develop the study skills and organizational skills which can help them become self-sufficient and successful learners. This course will focus on time management, homework, graphic organizers, Cornell notes and testing skills. This class is paired with Gadgets & Gizmos. ART 6 Grade Level: 6 Semesters 1 This class is a hands-on introduction to the elements and principles of art and design. Students will explore a variety of media and projects including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and multi-cultural art. Learning about This course is paired with Theater Arts. THEATER ARTS 6 Grade Level: 6 Semesters 1 Through this class, students will gain an appreciation in many aspects of theater arts. They will gain entry level knowledge in the areas of stage direction, careers in theater, pantomime, narrative structure, story-telling and characterization. Students will also demonstrate appropriate audience and performer etiquette and explore correct ways to show expression using voice and body by participating in short ensemble, duet and individual performances for their classmates. The class is paired with Art. MULTIMEDIA I Required Course Grade Level: 6 Semesters 2 Prerequisite: none Learning in this course will focus on applications to utilize the tablet in classroom activities. Applications students will use in middle school core courses such as Google Suite, Keynote, & imovie will be a focus of learning. Social media safety, digital citizenship, and presentation skills will also be covered in this course. PE Grade Level: 6th Semesters 2 PRE-ATHLETIC PE Grade Level: 6th Semesters 2 This course is for sixth-grade students interested in pursuing sports in 7th grade. Students will dress out daily and participate in strenuous running, weightlifting and drills designed to prepare them for athletics in middle school and beyond. There is no cost for the class and all workout clothes will be provided by the school. It is recommended to take the class if you are interested in playing on a sports team in Belton. 6

8 6TH GRADE DESCRIPTION OF COURSES 6TH GRADE ELECTIVE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS BAND Grade Level: 6 Semesters 2 Beginning Band at middle school is offered in the sixth (6th) grade. During this year, a student will learn the fundamentals needed to play a band instrument. The middle school directors will audition students during the spring of their fifth grade year and help them to choose the correct instrument. New students to the district must also be auditioned. Important: If you want to be in band, you must join the fall of your 6th grade year. Mid-semester changes to band are discouraged. A beginning band student may audition to play the following instruments: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion.. Attendance at all concerts is mandatory for all band students: Students earn a full test grade and end-of-the-year trip credit for concert attendances. All students need to purchase a t-shirt for their uniform. A yearly rental fee of $100 (opt. $50 per semester) will apply to all school-owned instruments. CHOIR Grade Level: 6 Semesters 2 Students who are interested in singing may explore that interest in sixth grade choir. This course will include instruction in vocal production, sight singing and ear training, music theory and history. There is a separate choir for boys and girls. Activities for the students include participation in the Fall, Christmas, Pre UIL and Spring concerts, solo and ensemble competitions, community performances and the end of the year trip. ALL CONCERTS ARE RE- QUIRED and most occur in the evening. Attendance at all concerts is mandatory for all choir students, and students are required to stay for the entire concert to earn a full test grade and end of the year trip credit. Some activities may require rehearsal time outside of school. Students are required to purchase a choir shirt. The typical cost is between $15 and $25 The students will have a casual uniform to include the choir polo shirt (purchased thru the choir program), blue or black full length jeans and close-toe shoes. ORCHESTRA Grade Level: 6th Semesters 2 This course is for beginning sixth-grade orchestra students. Emphasis will be placed on learning the basics of playing the violin, viola, cello and bass. Students will be taught practice skills as well as how to read music. Students will be required to have an instrument for this class. Violin and Viola players are encouraged to rent their own instruments. A yearly rental fee of $100 will apply to all school-owned instruments. 7

10 7TH GRADE DESCRIPTION OF COURSES 7TH GRADE ELECTIVES COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Conversational Spanish Grade Level: 7 Semesters 1 Hola! Let s learn Spanish. This class will use a variety of approaches that will enable students to pick-up the language with virtually no effort, in a stress-free, nonthreatening, entertaining, yet structured way. Examples of activities used in Spanish class include songs, chants, rhymes, dialogues, games, and videos. The Spanish class focuses mainly on listening and oral proficiency; however, some limited reading and writing are introduced. ART Grade Level: 7 Semesters 2 This course is open to students who wish to have several opportunities to experience various art media and techniques. Some of the projects the students will explore include drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics. There will be some art appreciation and short homework assignments. Intermediate Theater Arts Grade Level: 7 & 8 Semesters 2 This course will review and build on the information covered in the Beginning Theatre Course. Students will review stage directions and gain in-depth knowledge in areas of theatrical design including foundations of design, scenic and costume design, stage makeup application, and marketing. In the second semester, they will explore techniques used in film making, stage management, ensemble work and directing short scenes and that may be performed in a classroom setting or for a public audience. Each student will be required to purchase a basic makeup kit to protect student health and safety. Students may participate in a trip to the Texas Advanced Theater Arts Grade Level: 7 & 8 Semesters 2 Prerequisite: teacher approval Advanced Theatre is designed for the student who is committed to their craft and may wish to pursue acting, directing, or stage managing beyond middle school. The course will focus on building believable characters through script analysis, observation and personal experiences. Students will refine their skills in ensemble work as well as solo scenes and auditioning. Students in this class will be expected to participate in a minimum of 2 productions for a public audience which will include the UIL One Act Play contest and may include studentdirected performances or musicals. This course may include a production fee not to exceed $25. Students may participate in a trip to the Texas Renaissance Festival in Physical Education Grade Level: 7 Semesters 2 9

11 7TH GRADE DESCRIPTION OF COURSES BAND WIND ENSEMBLE : 7TH & 8TH SYMPHONIC BAND: 7TH & 8TH Prerequisite: Completed at least one year of band/audition Semesters: 2 These bands are performance/contest oriented organizations. Students are required to attend before and after school rehearsals and are required to perform at contests and concerts during the school year. Students must audition, be approved to enroll in these courses, and must have the equipment required to participate in the course. Students using school instruments (oboes, bassoons, French horns, baritones and tubas) will pay a yearly $ rental fee and must purchase the appropriate mouthpiece, reeds and cleaning supplies. Purchase of a method book and band uniform is also required. UIL regulations determine eligibility for performances and contests. Students who fail to meet the course requirements may be removed from these bands. STRING ORCHESTRA GRADE LEVEL : 7 & 8 Prerequisite: Enrolled in orchestra the previous full school year Semesters: 2 This course expands on what the students learned in Beginning Orchestra. They will be studying music appropriate for their age group and abilities. The students will continue to learn better practice and performance skills. All students are required to have an instrument for this class and are encouraged to rent their own. Only a few instruments will be available to rent through the school for a yearly fee of $100. CHOIR ADVANCED GIRLS GRADE LEVEL : 7 & 8 Prerequisite: Audition and director approval Semesters: 2 This choir is made up of 7th and 8th grade students who have a background in singing and who are interested in being a part of a performing group. Experience in solfege sight singing is helpful. Activities for the students include participation in the Fall, Christmas, Pre-UIL and spring concerts, solo and ensemble competitions, the opportunity at the UIL concert and sight-reading contest, community performances, and the end-of-year trip. Some activities will require rehearsal times outside the school day. ALL CONCERTS ARE REQUIRED and most occur in the evening. Attendance at all concerts is mandatory for all choir students and students are required to stay for the entire concert for an exam grade and eligibility for the end of the year trip. Students are required to purchase a choir polo shirt. The cost is typically between $15 and $25. Casual uniform will be the choir polo shirt, dark blue or black full-length jeans and close-toed shoes. A formal dress will be provided by the school for a $30 rental fee (covers dry cleaning, repair & maintenance). Girls need to purchase pantyhose and black dress shoes to complete the uniform. CHOIR ADVANCED BOYS GRADE LEVEL : 7 & 8 Prerequisite: Audition and director approval Semesters: 2 This choir is made up of 7th and 8th grade students who have a background in singing and who are interested in being part of a performing group. Experience in solfege sight singing is helpful. Activities for the students include participation in the Fall, Christmas and spring concerts, solo and ensemble competitions, UIL concert and sight-reading contest, community performances and the end-of-the year trip. Students will also have the opportunity to audition for TMEA Region Choir in January. These activities require some outside rehearsal times. Attendance at all concerts is mandatory for all choir students and students are required to stay for the entire concert for an exam grade and eligibility for the end of the year trip. Uniforms required: purchase polo shirt ($15), white tuxedo shirt, ($15) black slacks, black socks and black shoes. Vest and bow tie are provided by the school. 10

12 Required Courses 8TH GRADE PROGRAM 8th GRADE PROGRAM The following courses are part of the required program for eighth graders. Students will be placed at the appropriate level according to previous scholastic grades, standardized achievement test scores and ability scores. Some courses may qualify for high school credit. However, the final class grade will not be considered in the student s final gradepoint averages upon graduation from high school. REQUIRED COURSES SEMESTERS REQUIRED ELA (English/Language Arts) on-level or PreAP 2 High School Credit Math on-level, Algebra, or Geometry 2 Algebra and Geometry US History on-level or PreAP 2 Science on-level or PreAP 2 ALGEBRA - Placement in Algebra class will be determined by 7th grade STAAR scores and overall grades. Students who have struggled with the STAAR test the year before are recommended to take Math 8. GEOMETRY Only students who took Algebra in 7th grade are eligible for Geometry, Contact the school counselor if you have any questions. 13 COURSE DESCRIPTION CATALOG TH GRADE DESCRIPTION OF COURSES 8TH GRADE ELECTIVES COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ART I Grade Level: 8 Semesters 2 Prerequisite: None, $30.00 fee Credit: 1 Art I is for 8th grade students who wish to earn high school credit. There is no prerequisite but the course will include some research, reading and writing assignments, as well as written tests to meet the requirements for high school credit. Along with art history and art appreciation the course will include studio projects in many different styles and media. Some of the projects will include drawing, painting, sculpting, advertising, simple animation and ceramics. There will also be some written and creative homework. Students are required to pay a $30.00 lab fee. The lab fee pays for materials used throughout the year and may not be refunded. Students are allowed to keep all projects completed with these materials. Intermediate Theater Arts Grade Level: 7 & 8 Semesters 2 This course will review and build on the information covered in the Beginning Theatre Course. Students will review stage directions and gain in-depth knowledge in areas of theatrical design including foundations of design, scenic and costume design, stage makeup application, and marketing. In the second semester, they will explore techniques used in film making, stage management, ensemble work and directing short scenes and that may be performed in a classroom setting or for a public audience. Each student will be required to purchase a basic makeup kit to protect student health and safety. Students may participate in a trip to the Texas Advanced Theater Arts Grade Level: 7 & 8 Semesters 2 Prerequisite: teacher approval Advanced Theatre is designed for the student who is committed to their craft and may wish to pursue acting, directing, or stage managing beyond middle school. Students may participate in a trip to the Texas Renaissance Festival in OFFICE ASSISTANT Grade Level: 7/8 Semesters 2 Prerequisite: By approval only The main office area includes: the principal, assistant principals, registrar, secretary and attendance clerk. Main office assistants are expected to run errands, meet the public and do alphabetizing and filing. The students ability to follow instructions in a correct and timely manner is very important and will be a large part of their grade. Confidentiality, attendance and role modeling skills are important traits for this class. Students will be asked to help in other offices as needed. LIBRARY ASSISTANT Grade Level: 7/8 Semesters 2 Prerequisite: Application to the library Students collect books and shelve returned books. They assist in the processing of new books and magazines and politely deliver library notices to the faculty for distribution to students. They will learn basic concepts of the Dewey Decimal System and will master limited areas of the computer circulation procedures and online use of the internet. Confidentiality, attendance and role modeling skills are important traits for this class, as well as showing initiative. SPANISH I Grade Level: 8 Semesters 2 Credit: 1 Spanish I is the same as high school Spanish and is open to qualified eighth graders who will be eligible to go into Spanish II with a passing grade for the year and a passing grade for the second semester. This course will cover listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. It also includes culture with emphasis on Mexico and South America. 12

14 8TH GRADE DESCRIPTION OF COURSES STRING ORCHESTRA Grade Level: 7/8 Semesters: 2 Prerequisite Enrolled in orchestra the previous full year. This course expands on what the students learned in Beginning Orchestra. They will be studying music appropriate for their age group and abilities. The students will continue to learn better practice and performance skills. All students are required to have an instrument for this class or are encouraged to rent their own. CHOIR ADVANCED GIRLS Grade Level: 7 & 8 Semesters: 2 Prerequisite: Audition & Approval of Director This choir is made up of 7th and 8th grade students who have a background in singing and who are interested in being a part of a performing group. Experience in solfege sight singing is helpful. Activities for the students include participation in the Fall, Christmas, Pre-UIL and spring concerts, solo and ensemble competitions, the opportunity at the UIL concert and sight-reading contest, community performances, and the end-of-year trip. Some activities will require rehearsal times outside the school day. ALL CONCERTS ARE REQUIRED and most occur in the evening. Attendance at all concerts is mandatory for all choir students and students are required to stay for the entire concert for an exam grade and eligibility for the end of the year trip. Students are required to purchase a choir polo shirt ($15). Casual uniform will be the choir polo shirt, dark blue or black full-length jeans and close-toed shoes. A formal dress will be provided by the school for a $30 rental fee (covers dry cleaning, repair & maintenance). Girls need to purchase pantyhose and black dress shoes to complete the uniform. CONCERT GIRLS CHOIR Grade Level: 7 & 8 Semesters 2 Prerequisite: Approval of Director (and possible audition) This choir is for students who are ready to move into a more challenging level of choir, have auditioned and received approval from the director. This course will include extensive sight singing, ear training and vocal production. Students will have the opportunity to audition for the TMEA Region Choir in January. These activities may require rehearsal time outside of the school day. 15 SPORTS COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Sports Requirements DESCRIPTION OF COURSES Students wishing to take sports in 7th and 8th grade must have the approval of the coaches at the students current school. Students will be evaluated on their willingness to participate in physical activity at their school; their willingness to work hard; their behavior and attitudes in school; as well as their overall grades. The coaches will give the names of those students who may participate in the sports program to the registrar. Participation in some sports will be limited. Practice No Pass - No Play Physical All athletes must attend practice during class, before school, and/or after school. Scheduled morning practices may begin as early as 6:30 AM. Afternoon practices may end as late as 6 p.m. Games will be scheduled after school hours and on weekends. All transportation to and from practices will be the responsibility of the parent. BISD will provide transportation to and from athletic events. All UIL sports take precedence over any outside sports such as youth leagues. If an athlete chooses outside sports events on a continuous basis over UIL sports, he/ she may be removed from the athletic program. Participation in sports activities is a privilege and good grades are a priority. Belton ISD follows the State UIL No Pass - No Play rule. According to UIL rules, if an athlete is not passing all subjects he/she will not be able to participate in the sport for 3 weeks. In order for a student to regain eligibility at 3 weeks, the student must be passing all classes. If an athlete fails the first three six weeks, he/she will be removed from sports. All athletes who participate in athletics/sports MUST have a physical examination on file prior to the first day of school in order to try out for fall sports. According to BISD policy, all athletes MUST have a new physical every year. Physical forms will be provided to athletes from all middle schools. *Boys hair may not be longer in the back than the shirt collar. Beards and mustaches are not permitted, and boys are expected to be clean-shaven. No jewelry is to be worn in the ear or face. Boys Sports Sports Boys Grade Level: 7 Semesters: 2 Prerequisite: Coach approval Boys sports are courses for boys interested in competitive athletics and include cross country, football, basketball and track. Not all the boys in the class are assured of a spot on any particular team. Tryouts are held at the beginning of each season and only a certain number of students are selected. This is especially true in basketball. The emphasis for the class will be conditioning of all athletes using weight training and plyometrics. Athletes need to have dedication, desire and commitment toward participation in order to succeed in sports. Strenuous exercise is required for this course. See sports requirements above. All students must have a current physical prior to the start of school. EQUIPMENT: Boys playing football will be furnished all equipment except shoes and an athletic supporter. NOTE: Boys basketball will begin the week after football is finished. Everyone in the sports program may try out for the team. 14

16 GIRLS SPORTS SPORTS GIRLS DESCRIPTION OF COURSES Grade Level: 7/8 Semesters 2 Prerequisite: Coach Approval Girls sports is a course for girls interested in competitive cross-country, volleyball, basketball and track. Conditioning is a major factor in the sports program. This includes long distance running, sprint work, weight training and plyometrics. Athletes need to have dedication, desire and a commitment toward participation in order to succeed in sports. Girls must be able to attend early morning practices and/or after school practices. Transportation to practices is the responsibility of the parents. NOTE: Strenuous exercise is required for this course. See sports requirements, page 15 for further information. All students must have a current physical prior to start of school. BOYS/GIRLS SPORTS SPORTS COURSE DESCRIPTIONS (CONT.) CROSS COUNTRY Grade Level: 7/8 Aug. Oct. Prerequisite: Coach Approval Cross country teams will work out at 6:30 a.m. during the week. Any student may participate, and scheduling may be flexible for those students also participating in football, volleyball, and cheerleading. TENNIS Grade Level: 7/8 All Year Prerequisite: Coach Approval & Tryout Tennis is offered for those students who are interested in competing in high school tennis on the competitive level. This is not a leisure time to learn to play tennis. All students in this class will be required to attend all before-school practices and participate in all tennis matches scheduled during the school year. Most tennis matches are scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays. Students in this class will not be able to participate in volleyball, football, basketball, golf, or cheerleading. Required try-outs are conducted in the spring. CHEERLEADING Grade Level: 7/8 Prerequisite: Spring Tryouts All Year Cheerleading is considered a physical education course. Tryouts conducted in the spring are required for admission to this course. Final class selections will be based on grades, conduct and practice workouts. Students will be expected to dress out and participate in strenuous exercise daily. Cheerleading skills such as cheers, chants, jumps, partner stunts, and dances will be taught. There will be many required extracurricular activities, and several more will be optional. All students in the class will have to purchase workout clothes and will be required to pay for cheer camp in the summer. This is a mandatory, four-day camp. Approximate cost is $300. At the time of printing, uniform cost is not decided but is expected to be below $100. Shoes, bloomers, and camp clothes are items to be purchased and will cost approximately $105. Additional items may also be required. TRACK Grade Level: 7/8 Prerequisite: Coach Approval Feb. April Track season will begin the first week in February, and the season ends in April. GOLF Grade Level: 7/8 Feb. April Prerequisite: Coach Approval Golf is an after-school program which begins in February. This program is limited to 10 middle-school boys and 10 middle-school girls. Each year, players must qualify to become a member of the team. There is a small fee each player must pay the golf course each year (approximately $40). Each player must provide his/her own golf clubs and equipment. Practice will be after school at least twice per week. Each player must provide own transportation to and from the golf course each day of practice. SWIMMING Grade Level: 7/8 All Year Prerequisite: Interested students must tryout under the swim coaches supervision. Students will be instructed in the four competitive swimming strokes, racing starts and proper turns for each of the strokes. Students will also be introduced to various types of training methods; for example, using pace clocks, fins, kickboards, pull-buoys and bungee cords. This class is a COMPETITIVE TEAM formed by combining swimmers from all three middle schools. Emphasis will be placed on stroke improvement and swimming development. Workouts will be developed to challenge each individual, and swimmers will be expected to participate in several competitions (meets) throughout the year. Students who compete in other sports in the fall and want to do swimming need to call Coach Burt or Coach York at about swimming in the spring. 15
