Cawthra Park s student population is diverse and multi-talented. It is comprised of individuals from our neighbourhood community and those who attend our Regional Arts Program. In addition to our extensive arts activities, our community has a school-wide focus on ecological awareness and on social responsibility. We also have an active athletic program, which includes badminton, baseball, softball, basketball, cross-country, track and field, swimming, soccer, tennis, volleyball and ultimate frisbee. Cawthra Park s Specialist High Skills Major in Arts and Culture allows all grade 11 and 12 students the opportunity to obtain sector-specific certifications, participate in reach ahead/experiential learning opportunities and gain work experience in the Arts and Culture Industry. In addition, all grade 9 students can participate in specialized programming during grade 9 and 10 by enrolling in an Explore High Skills program in Arts and Culture. Through this program our students will develop specific skills, and make clear connections between the curriculum and a future career in the Arts and Culture Industry. Students will also participate in sector related community involvement, experiential learning and certifications.

5 ARTS AND CULTURE SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM) Our SHSM program in Arts and Culture at Cawthra Park SS encompasses the areas of Visual Art, Digital Media, Drama, Music, Social/Family Studies, Technology and Business. The in-school program consists of a bundle of courses in each of the areas which will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance student learning. Students will be involved in reach ahead experiences and exposure to post-secondary institutions such as OCAD, the University of Toronto and Sheridan College, Ryerson University and Humber College. Students will also have an opportunity for job shadowing and job twinning experiences. There will be sector recognized certifications in portfolio evaluation, First Aid and CPR, theatrical sound/lighting, costume design, special effects make-up, computers in music and music repair. In order to complete an SHSM in Arts and Culture, students 1. Complete a bundle of 8 specific courses (see chart below); 2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs; 3. Participate in experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job shadowing, job twinning); 4. Learn and document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport; 5. Gain Reach Ahead experience connected to the student s post-secondary plans.
