1 Academic Services Team Vision The adoption of new ELA and math curriculum programs necessitates changes to our current assessment structure for affected courses, but also offers an opportunity to create a more aligned, purposeful and streamlined assessment structure across the network. The purpose of assessment is to determine student understanding and mastery of course standards and to inform, modify, adjust, enrich, and differentiate instruction to meet the learning needs of all students. These proposed changes aim to create an assessment structure achieves this aim by aligning written curriculum and assessed curriculum, creating multiple opportunities for assessment, and providing opportunities for rich data and student work analysis throughout the year. The following changes are being proposed for the school year: Eliminate Bi-weekly assessments: Although BWAs have become an institutionalized operating mechanism, they are cumbersome from both a management and content perspective, providing unnatural breaks in content. Additionally, we have experienced problematic practices surrounding implementation and management, including lost instructional days, increased data pressure and over-alignment to multiple choice items. We will replace existing BWAs with unit exams to provide a similar formative touchpoint. Introduce unit exams across subjects: Both Eureka and Wit and Wisdom provide embedded assessments, and in many cases, midpoint assessments, for each unit of study. In an effort to align written, taught and assessed curriculum, we propose using those embedded assessments as the primary formative assessment mechanism. We plan to use the assessments as written, with the potential to add a handful of STAAR released, aligned multiple choice answers. AST created unit exams will be used across the other grade level and content bands. Concerns: Exam dates may not be consistent across grades and contents. How do we ensure standardized communication of calendar and reporting to ensure clarity for campus and district managers? Provide space for open-ended responses in unit exams: The overwhelming majority of our assessments are multiple choice. Although we provide room for OERs in various subjects, they are not typically embedded in our tracked assessments. Next year, we propose embedding primarily OERs in unit exams to provide increased opportunities for students to complete rigorous work and demonstrate their thinking. Almost all Eureka and Great Minds embedded assessments are open-ended. Additionally, this provides more fruitful content for SWAM meetings. Concerns: Teacher grading time. Lagging data turnaround. Increased need to norm on rubric based grading practices. Increased need for leader content familiarity and mastery. Eliminate IA#1: Given the unit assessment structure, students would potentially complete a unit exam immediately before a calendared Interim #1. For example, a standard Wit and Wisdom module extends across the full quarter. The unit assessment falls near the conclusion of the quarter. Because there is a limited amount of content covered in 8-10 weeks of instruction, those first unit exams are fairly comprehensive. Therefore, we propose eliminating this exam in favor of increased focus on the quarter one unit exams. While we could offer a STAAR aligned benchmark for IA#1, we fear that would provide incentives to drop curriculum fidelity and/or over-align instruction and review for test preparation. Instead, we want to prioritize instructional time and drive energy toward those unit exams.
