4 FULTON COUNTY COURSE PLACEMENT GUIDELINES For e Academic School Year Teachers will recommend students based on e Westlake High School s guidelines for course placement for next school year. However, if students do not meet e departmental guidelines for placement in a desired course but meet e Fulton County Course Placement Guidelines, ey can request placement in at course wiout going rough e waiver process wi parental permission. 11 GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING Counselors in our school work wi students individually and in groups to assist in personal, social, career and educational development. In addition to school-based counselors, two college/career counselors are available to provide assistance. During e fall semester our counselors schedule Information Nights for specific grade levels. These evenings are packed wi information needed for parents/guardians and students desiring to have a fruitful high school experience. DUAL ENROLLMENT Juniors and Seniors may enroll at a two-year, four-year, or technical college and take one or more courses which simultaneously count toward eir high school diploma requirements as well as to eir college degree. Students may attend college full- or part-time. Various sources are available at cover tuition costs and oer expenses. Students should discuss dual enrollment wi eir counselor and must apply to e institute and meet residency and minimum GPA plus SAT/ACT requirements to be accepted. For information, visit ONLINE LEARNING PROGRAMS An educational opportunity where students can take classes rough approved distance learning educational institutions may benefit some students. The following guidelines must be considered: Students should only consider taking online courses if ey cannot take e course in eir regular class schedule and/or Summer School. Fulton County Virtual Campus Virtual Campus is an online learning program at provides students wi a unique opportunity to take courses over e Internet raer an inside a traditional classroom. The courses are designed for students who want to make up a course or get ahead by earning additional credits toward high school graduation. (Students must see eir counselor to enroll). Online courses provide flexibility, encourage personal initiative, promote interactive learning and critical inking, and offer an intellectual challenge to selected students. For more information, please visit Georgia Virtual School Georgia Virtual School is a program of e Georgia Department of Education s Office of Technology Services. The program is SACS CASI accredited and operates in partnership wi schools and parents to offer middle school and high school level courses across e state. GAVS provides a teacher-led, virtual classroom environment, equipping students wi an online media center and guidance center to support e online course experience. Students enroll rough e GAVS website and only take e course rough GAVS if e corresponding course is not offered rough Fulton Virtual School. HOPE Scholarship Currently, calculations for e HOPE Scholarship are based only on core courses at meet e state core requirements. Only core curriculum coursework attempted in e student s high school career (9-12) will be counted toward e HOPE Scholarship cumulative grade point average. Unweighted numeric grades will be converted to e 4.0 scale. HOPE eligibility requires a 3.0 average, which en makes students eligible for a percentage tuition scholarship at public Georgia colleges based on previous year tuition rates. Students graduating wi a 3.7 average are eligible for a Zell Miller Scholar Program Hope Scholarship which pays 100% of tuition at public Georgia colleges. The unweighted numeric average will be submitted for use in calculating HOPE eligibility. Grades for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccaluareate (IB) classes will be weighted on a 4.0 scale wi an additional 0.5 points. Grades for Courses will not be weighted.

Transcripts show e numeric grades for each reporting period and e student s overall numeric average. The Cumulative Numeric Average is determined by adding all numeric grades togeer and dividing at total by e number of courses taken. Seven honors points are added to each passing grade in dual enrollment, honors and College Board Advanced Placement by e Fulton County School System. Note at e cumulative numeric average reported on e transcript is not e same average used to determine HOPE eligibility. Promotion/Retention High school students must earn a certain number of units in order to earn promotion to e next grade level. Requirements for promotion are: Freshman: promotion from eigh grade Sophomore: minimum of 5 units of credit Junior: minimum of 11 units of credit Senior: minimum of 17 units of credit Progress Reports and Report Cards Progress reports are given to students to take home every six(6) weeks and report cards are given at e end of each semester. A final grade and credit earned will be credited to e student at e end of each semester. Parents/Guardians should feel free to contact e school about eir child's progress at any time during e semester. Counselors and teachers will be glad to discuss wi parents e program and e progress of eir child. Home Access Center (HAC) is available to parents/guardians to check eir child s progress after e first two weeks of e semester. Grading Scale As mandated by e state, students earn numeric grades. Passing grades are 70 and above. A cumulative numeric average will be computed at e end of every semester. For scholarship and college entrance requirements e scale shown below appears at e bottom of each student s transcript. Students enrolled in Advanced Placement,, International Baccalaureate, and joint enrollment/postsecondary options courses receive an additional seven points to be added to a passing final grade. A = 90 and above B = 0-9 C = F = Below 70 TESTING PROGRAMS National Testing Fulton County Schools participate in national testing programs such as e Admissions Testing Program of e College Board, e American College Testing Program, and oers administered primarily to high school juniors and seniors. Most colleges use ese test scores as a criterion for admission. Students who expect to attend postsecondary institutions should prepare for ese admissions tests and for eir postsecondary work by taking a strong academic program in high school. The high school counselor should be contacted regarding e specific dates for e following tests: DAT (Differentia l Aptitude Test) and Career Interest Inventory - administered to selected 9 grade students in e fall. The results are designed to give a profile of students interests and aptitudes wi highlights of a student s strengs and ose areas at may need additional study. There is no

13 cost to e student. PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) - administered in October to all students in 9, 10 and 11 grades. Students who expect to take e SAT gain valuable experience rough taking e PSAT. Funding is provided for all 9, 10, and 11 grade students. Scores of 11 grade students determine eligibility for National Merit Scholarships. SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) - usually administered several times each year at sites designated by e testing company. Juniors are encouraged to take e SAT in e spring of eir junior year and again in e fall of eir senior year. Students should determine if colleges to which ey are applying require e SAT. Westlake High School offers a course during e school day to Seniors in e fall and Juniors in e spring semesters. ACT - usually administered five times each year at sites designated by e testing company. College-bound students should determine if colleges to which ey are applying require e ACT. If so, ey are encouraged to take is test in e fall of eir senior year. Advanced Placement Exam - administered in May for college placement. Students who take and pass AP courses are required to take e AP exam. Funding is provided. State Testing The Georgia Department of Education has required middle and high school students in certain courses to take an end of course test. EOC (End of Course Milestone) in CCGPS Coordinated Algebra, CCGPS Analytical Geometry, US History, Economics, Biology, Physical Science, Nin Grade Literature, and American Literature. Students in ese courses will take e EOC a few weeks before e end of e semester. Individual and Group Tests Individual assessments to measure aptitude, achievement, mental abilities and career interests are administered by school psychologists at all grade levels as needed. Their concern is to evaluate e psychological and educational aspects of e individual student's grow and development. School counselors may also administer individual and group achievement, aptitude and career interest assessments. Westlake High School may administer learning style inventories for e purposes of developing delivery meods best suited for e student. The feeder middle schools or WHS may also administer career interest surveys to assist students wi making appropriate paway selections for eir ICP (Individual Career Plan). Special Programs ACADEMIC SERVICE LEARNING Academic Service Learning provides opportunities to apply learning rough active participation in oughtfully organized, meaningful community service at: is integrated into and enhances academic studies; is conducted in e community to address community needs; connects an elementary, middle or high school wi non-profit community service organizations and e community; provides time for structured reflection and celebration. EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS Programs for students wi disabilities are provided rough e Services for Exceptional Children Department. Programs are offered for learning disabled, behavior disordered, speech impaired, hearing impaired, visually impaired, physically disabled and intellectually disabled children. 14 MAGNET PROGRAMS Fulton County offers students a choice of four magnet programs: International Studies at Riverwood High School, Maematics and Science at Westlake High School, Arts and Sciences at Nor Springs High School, and Visual and Performing Arts at Tri-Cities High School. As in oer high school programs, magnet program students must complete core curriculum courses and may also qualify for and take Advanced Placement and honors classes. Unlike oer high school programs, magnet programs require students to take at least one unit per year in eir major area of interest. REMEDIAL EDUCATION Remedial education is intended for students in grades 9-12 who have identified deficiencies in reading, writing, and/or in maematics. This program provides individualized basic skills instruction as mandated by Georgia Law in e areas of reading, writing, and maematics. In order at students receive appropriate instruction, teachers match teaching strategies wi a student s learning style. In addition, remedial teachers use a process of teaching e basic skills at lends itself to an integrated approach across e total curriculum content. TALENTED AND GIFTED (TAG) The Talented and Gifted (TAG) program provides curriculum extensions for academically advanced and talented students. This curriculum, which includes honors, Advanced Placement, and joint enrollment courses, is provided rough e general education program and e gifted program. The gifted program augments classroom activities rough seminars, subject-area extensions, independent studies, career internships and advisement. WORK-BASED LEARNING (Career Technology) The Work-Based Learning Program allows qualified juniors and/or seniors to receive course credit for a supervised experience related to eir career paway. Paid/unpaid internship opportunities are available rough Career Tech paways and WBL opportunities wi collaboration rough CTI for SEC students. These programs combine classroom instruction, on-e-job work experience, and leadership training rough e Career Tech Student Organizations. Participants are given release time from school to complete eir work experience, ough is release time does not provide at e student s lunchtime can be scheduled immediately prior to eir work-based learning experience. Students are supervised at e work site by eir employers and e work program coordinator. Students must provide eir own transportation to e work site. ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES The Fulton County School System offers numerous Advanced Placement courses representing language arts, maematics, science, social studies, world languages, music, and visual art. Most colleges and universities award credit for specific levels of performance on e AP exams given in May. Enrollment is open to all qualified students. Completing e appropriate AP exam is mandatory in order to receive AP credit for e course. Interested students should contact an AP instructor, counselor, or e Curriculum Assistant Principal for information and application procedures. Interested students are highly encouraged to also attend e AP night, which educates parents and students on e many aspects of taking an AP class.

15 Westlake High School Course Waiver Process Course assignments are aligned to e State of Georgia and Fulton County s graduation requirements. Students are placed in ese courses based on a combination of academic performance, standardized test performance, teacher recommendation, and guidance counseling. We strongly advise against students taking courses against e teacher and/or system recommendation. Students who wish to enroll in a class against a teacher/counselor recommendation may do so by having eir parent /guardian sign e academic course waiver, and attaching appropriate documentation of extenuating circumstances. Students must have met e minimum course mastery and prerequisite requirements. The Fulton County School System also offers recovery opportunities for courses failed during e regular sessions of school. These courses are not designed for first-time course takers. Please schedule a meeting wi your student s guidance counselor for more information concerning course recovery opportunities. Waiving into an AP Course If e student wants to take e AP course, ey must complete e waiver form, which includes a required Parent/AP Teacher consultation. AP Class Consultation: Parent is required to consult wi e teacher of e AP course via phone or . Completed Waiver form (including all required signatures) is turned into Student Services. Waiving into an Course Student requests a Waiver form from Student Services or download from website. Completed Waiver form (including all required signatures) is turned into Student Services. By waiving into a course, e student and parent understand e following: You are choosing to register for a course which goes against e recommended academic placement of your teacher, counselor, and administrator. You are making a commitment to stay in is course for e entire academic year. It is your responsibility to ensure at you make every effort to earn a passing grade in is course. It is your responsibility to find and complete e summer reading assignments related to e course you are waiving into by e deadline determined by e teacher. 16 COURSE REGISTRATION Scheduling Timeline February 11-February 24: teachers make core class recommendations for students February 24: 9 grade Career Expo Night middle school students and parents have opportunity to visit Westlake and learn about available paways February 27-March 5: Middle school elective registration. Middle school students will select electives. March 3-6: Students will individually make eir own selections for elective courses. Students will meet wi counselors during prearranged times and will complete elective selection forms. March 17: First course verification sent home during seminar. A course verification form contains a list of all courses for which your student has been registered core and elective. March 19: Scheduling Snack and Chat counselors will be available to address any questions at parents may have concerning course verification forms. Counselors will be available on a drop-in basis from 5:30pm 6:30pm. Parents may also drop off verification forms at is time. March 20: First course verification should be signed and returned to Student Services. Any necessary changes should be indicated on e attached form. April 15: Second course verifications will be sent home April 20: Course verifications should be returned to Student Services. No additional changes to course selections can be accommodated after is date. *Course verifications do NOT include teacher names and periods. Scheduling Policy and Schedule Change Policy Students and parents provide input into scheduling decisions during e schedule verification process each spring. Final scheduling decisions, however, are e school administration s responsibility. Once classes are scheduled in e spring of each year, it is difficult to make schedule changes. Students along wi parents must carefully consider all courses being requested, including e combined time commitment of multiple and AP courses wi respect to a student s total school work-load. During e first 10 school days, schedule changes will only be considered by e scheduling team if: The student has failed a required course and must repeat e course. The student has failed a course prerequisite and is not eligible to continue in e course sequence. The student has failed to enroll in a course required for graduation. The student demonstrates poor achievement in a prerequisite course and is advised by e teacher, counselor, and Curriculum Assistant Principal not to enroll in a more advanced course. There is a scheduling conflict or a course has been canceled. Requests for teacher changes or specific course will not be permitted. Westlake reserves e right to make adjustments to student schedules due to changes in enrollment and/or to balance class sizes.
