Co-operative Education Co-operative Education is a senior level elective course that has students typically spend an afternoon or morning in the community working with an employer. There is no limit to the number of co-operative education courses a student can earn throughout high school. Pictured below is Emma-Lee Kowbasniuk who is an Environmental SHSM student completing her mandatory Co-op placement with Bait Harvester. Students should contact Mr. Bursey for more information. 2

Outdoor Education Outdoor Education is a grade eleven elective course enjoyed by many of our LEP students. One of the components of the course is a three day canoe trip to the French River. 4
Athletics Cross Country Running Intermediate Cross-Country Running: from Ms. Yauk Congratulations to all of our Cross-Country Runners! Winston Churchill once said: Continuous effort - not strength nor intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential. Our Knights really unlocked their potential yesterday. In a large and highly competitive field, perseverance won out as both teams performed extremely well. Led by Marco Groulx in 4th place and Adam Chebbi in 8th, the boys team placed a very respectable second. Several athletes had personal best finishes, and everyone played a vital role in this silver medal performance. Our Lady Knight s once again brought home the City Championship banner. The girls dominated the field. Samantha Bourdon had a personal best top ten finish, and our Knights also swept the podium. Gabby Alexander took home the bronze, Aoife Mahaffy the silver, and Sophia Oomen was the gold medal winner. 5
Secondary Cross-Country Running From Coach Dupuis and Coach Ward: After capturing 4 of the 6 division banners as well as the overall AA aggregate banner at the City Championship sat Kivi Park on October 18th, the Knights' XC team is eager to compete at NOSSA on Wednesday, October 25th. Over 45 team members of LEP's XC team and their coaches will travel to Nature's Harmony Ecolodge in Mattawa to compete against runners from the Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay and Sudbury. Lo-Ellen has its sight set on provincials the following week. Look forward to next week s newsletter to find out NOSSA results. You will not be disappointed. Go Knights! 6
Girls Flag Football The girls Flag Football team continue to impress, with a recent 1-0 win against College Dame. in quarter final action. The girls advance to the semi-finals next week. Girls Basketball The Senior Girls Basketball Team captured a silver medal at the Humber Invitational against competitive AA and AAA teams. The Junior and Midget Girls travel to Timmins this upcoming weekend. 7
School Clubs & Community Connections Visual Arts: Ms. Catto Lo-Ellen's own artist, Ivy Ireland, participated last week in Cambrian College's Art Battle Event. Ivy made it to the final round, and came in 2nd! She competed with, and beat, college students, and adult artists with her painting that was completed in 20 minutes. Way to go IVY! 8

Yearbooks can be purchased through the main office by cash or cheque or online using the following link: http://ybstore.friesens.com/stores/319003 Environmental Club From Mr. Lafraniere Lo-Ellen Park Environmental Council and Environment SHSM members attended a special screening of Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power' on Thursday, October 26th.Students learned about the progresses that have been made to tackle climate change (since Al Gore's original documentary). Students were also exposed to Gore's efforts to persuade governmental leaders to invest in renewable energy, culminating in the landmark signing of the 2016 Paris Agreement. It was a great experience for all! 9
JOAN MANTLE MUSIC TRUST - 10th YEAR - COMMUNITY CONCERT 2017-2018 marks the 10 th year that the Joan Mantle Music Trust will be distributing funding to secondary school music programs in the Rainbow District School Board. The Trust has raised $220,000 since it was established in November 2008. To celebrate, Rainbow District School Board will host a 10 th anniversary fundraising concert on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 7 PM in the McKellar Auditorium at Lockerby Composite School. From Student Services Guidance Counsellors, Mrs. Bourget and Ms. Gomm, met with their grade nine students this week in small group settings. One of the events shared with the students was Take Our Kids To Work Day which will take place on November 1st. T ake Our Kids to Work is an annual national program in which Grade 9 students are hosted by parents, relatives and volunteers at workplaces across the country. The program supports career development by helping students connect school, the world of work, and their own futures. Students are reminded to submit their completed permission forms to Guidance by October 27th. High School 101 An evening information session will take place on Wednesday November 8th for all incoming grade 8 students entitled High School 101. At this hour long event, parents and students will learn important information about the transition from elementary school to high school. There will be discussion around pathways, the International Baccalaureate Program, French Immersion, 21st Century Learning and the Specialist High Skills Major Programs in Architectural Design and Sustainable Construction and the Environment. Students will also have the opportunity to speak to current grade nine students. 11

This FREE event is geared for high school students, parents, as well as individuals looking for career options. Light refreshments and snacks will be served. In addition, industry speakers will share their experiences and there will be a variety of careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and Trades for participants to learn about. If you re in Grade 7 or Grade 8 plan to attend our secondary school information evening along with your parents/guardians. Making the Transition: Finding Your Way from 8 to 9 will take place on Tuesday, November 14 th from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at the Cambrian College Student Centre. 12
