International School of Bremen Parent Bulletin 20 Staffing Please be aware that upon medical advice, Mrs Evans has to begin her maternity leave much earlier than was originally planned. Her absence will, of course, disrupt the current teaching of her classes. We have plans in place to make sure there is minimum impact upon the Maths education of your child. DATES Community Survey Last Monday, 19 February, we distributed by email the survey in which we would like you to participate. Unfortunately, we are having some problems with mails to Microsoft addresses such as msn, live, outlook and hotmail. If you have not yet received a mail invitation to participate in the survey, please contact the school at: info@isbremen.de and we will send you the link again. Note that only one email has been sent per family. If you require an additional link, for example for your partner, please also contact us at the above address. New After-School Activities Ballet for EL2 - Grade 1 Students Ballet teacher, Mrs Antonescu, who is currently running ballet classes for students of Grades 1 3 on a Tuesday, will be starting up new classes for our youngest students aged 4-6 years each Monday from 3.15-4.00pm. Classes will start this coming Monday, 26 February and will take place in the Small Gym on the first floor. Each session costs 6 which can be paid either each week, or in a lump-sum: For 12 weeks (until the summer holidays) 72 or 2 x 6 weeks à 36. If your child is interested, they should come to the Small Gym on Monday. Prior registration is not necessary. Sewing Club Starting on Wednesday, 7 March, or Thursday, 8 March, a Sewing Club will be starting up for students of Grades 4 and 5. Time: 3.15-4.45pm. Related costs are 30 per month for those who commit to the club. If your child is interested, please inform the School Office. A room will be allocated once we know how many students will be participating. http://www.photos-public-domain Design Thinking - Challenging your Mindset After hearing complaints about the hot lunch programme during the last PIM meeting, Mrs Abreu and Mrs Cazabeau would like interested students from Grades 6-12, staff and parents to work on improving the situation. Using the Design Thinking approach and other project management tools, participants aim to: Discover: enquire, collect information and get an understanding of the users wishes and issues Interpret: define main problems and challenges Form ideas and decide on the goal. This is not a place to complain, nor a task-force for an easy-quick-fix. It will be a place to learn and serve. If interested, please join Mrs Cazabeau and Mrs Abreu on Tuesday, 13 March from 3.05-4.00pm in Room 208 (2nd floor Science). The club will take place on a weekly basis. Meet Our CAS Students... June, Grade 11 For my Creativity section of CAS, I decided to take extra German lessons in order to try to master the language as fast as possible. Since my Creativity is something I am rather comfortable with now, I have decided that, for my Service, I will try something that I would not have done before. I joined a group with some of my fellow classmates teaching Primary students to play soccer. The soccer club took place every Thursday after school and we always had a lot of enthusiastic kids. The soccer club was a learning process for me, certainly a teaching process. The relationship established with the kids was very good and the club turned out to be great fun. I realised how incredibly hard it is to control and organise little adrenaline-full kids, but the experience was extremely helpful and gave me an insight into a teacher s work. Nevertheless, I ve decided to change my Service in order to try other fun and interesting activities in which I can help out. 2 Parent Bulletin 23 February 2018

Library News ISB Library Chess Tournament 2018 Winners Elementary Grade 1 Chibuike Grade 2 Julius Grade 3 Ali Grade 4 Matias Grade 5 Julius Helling. The Overall Elementary Chess Champion 2018 is Julius Helling. Congratulations to all winners! Certificates and a trophy will be awarded at an Elementary Assembly very soon. Request for Taxi Pool A new family living in the direction of Oldenburg will be sending their two children (3 years and 5 years of age) to ISB after the summer holidays. As both parents work takes them in the opposite direction to Bremen, they are wondering whether other families from the Oldenburg/Ganderkesee/Delmenhorst area might like to join them in hiring a taxi to transport their children each day to and from ISB. If you are interested, please contact Mrs Brinkmann- Mclean at the Front Desk or by phone (0421-515 779 0) or mail (emclean@isbremen.de). Bremen Inter-School Chess Tournament On Wednesday, 28 February, five ISB teams from Elementary and Secondary will be participating in this tournament in the Weser Stadium. Students will have the honour of representing ISB there and earning House Points. If you have not already done so, please remember to sign and submit the Parental Permission Form. If you are interested in accompanying and supporting the teams on the day (from 8.00am - 3.00pm), please see Mrs Holsten in the Library or contact her by email: library@isbremen.de. 23 February 2018 Parent Bulletin 3

University and Career Guidance Counselling (Grades 9-12) Important Note! Step One Interviews Thank you to all those parents who supported their child in the debriefing interviews. If you wish to use the information gained and the test results to guide IB choices for Grade 11, please consult Mr Walton. Due to the absence of Mrs Evans (see front page), any issues related to entry into universities anywhere in the world this year should be directed now to Mr Davis or Mr Walton. Grade 12 Applications Those who have applied to UK institutions will hear back before March and will have to accept after the IB results are out. Please check the conditional offers for information that the universities request in addition to what you have already provided. The deadlines for some US colleges are rolling, meaning that applications to these institutions can still be made. See Mrs Evans for more information. All Other Universities Teachers will not give you a letter of recommendation directly. You will have to see Mrs Evans to request one or, if you have requested it directly from a teacher, you will have to ask Mrs Evans to send it to the university that requests it. A recommendation from a teacher is a professional reference and, as such, you will not get to see it. All other applications should be nearly complete by now so, if you require additional documents (this will be stipulated during the specific application procedure), see Mrs Evans at least 2 weeks before it is required by the institution. May + June July 5 DEADLINES, FAIRS + TESTS Grade 12 receives offers and replies from universities IB results published If you have questions on any of the above, please contact Mr Davis or Mr Walton. 4 Parent Bulletin 23 February 2018
