KC High School Requirements & Information

KC Credits Students earn ½ credit for each course they pass at semester 1 st semester 1 st, 2 nd, & 3 rd Six weeks grading periods 2 nd semester 4 th, 5 th, & 6 th Six weeks grading periods Students can earn up to 8 credits per year If students fail a required course, they have 3 options: Average Up second semester Attend Summer School Retake the course the following school year Total credits earned determine promotion to the next grade A minimum of 5 credits earned to promote to 10 th A minimum of 10 credits earned to promote to 11 th A minimum of 15 credits earned to promote to 12 th

KC STAAR End of Course Testing There are 5 STAAR tests that students are required to pass to be eligible for high school graduation: 1. English I (9 th grade) 2. Biology (9 th grade) 3. Algebra I (8 th or 9 th grade) 4. English II (10 th grade) 5. US History (10 th or 11 th grade) Students are eligible to earn an exemption on the English I, English II, and/or Algebra I exam by meeting certain PSAT, SAT, or ACT criteria. STAAR tests do NOT determine promotion to the next grade and/or the retaking of a course.

KC Attendance State law requires children ages 6-19 to attend school each day that instruction is provided. Both the child and the parent are responsible for unexcused absences. The 90% Rule: This rule requires students to attend class 90% of the time in order to receive credit in the class. The 90% rule applies to all absences, including excused absences. An attendance committee will meet to determine if the credit is granted or denied.

KC GPA & Rank Grade Point Average (GPA) is a cumulative reflection of a student s academic performance also used to determine student rankings in the class. GPA is calculated by adding grade points for each semester course then dividing by the total number of semester courses. GPA and Rank are calculated twice a year (September & January). Sophomores, Juniors, & Seniors who have Regular Classes Weighted Classes 90-100 4 points 5 points 80-89 3 points 4 points 70-79 2 points 3 points Below 70 0 points 0 points a GPA of 4.0 or higher may opt to take a non-weighted class as Pass/Fail (removing it from the GPA calculation) if the graduation requirements for that course has been met. Graduate with Honors = 3.5 or higher Graduate with High Honors =4.0 or higher

Top 10% One of the reasons class rank is important is because students who graduate in the top 10% of their class, are guaranteed admission to any public university in the state of Texas, with the exception of UT in Austin, which requires students to be in the top 6% for automatic admission. KC
