T-scores of students
What is a T-Score? It gives the relative position of a student s performance as compared to the performance of all other students in that subject. The raw score obtained in the exam only shows how good the student is in that subject, not how good he is compared to others.
Where How is T-Score calculated? T = 50 + 10 (X Y) Z X = student s mark for the subject Y = average mark (mean) scored by all students Z = spread of marks around the average mark (standard deviation)
Example: Pupil s mark (X) in exam = 50.0 Average mark (Y) scored by all pupils = 68.0 Spread of marks (Z) around the average = 14.0 T = 50 + 10 (50 68) 14 = 50 180 14 = 37.14
How is the Aggregate Score calculated? By adding the T-scores for ALL 4 subjects Example: Subject Total Mark T-score EL 1 200 105 34 CL2 200 152 51 Maths 100 67 53 Science 100 58 47 Aggregate: 185
T-Scores and Grades Is it possible for a student with 3A* and 1A to be ranked lower than another student who has only 1A* and 3As? YES
Subject John s Susan s Mark T-score Mark T-score EL 168 68 164 63 A* A MT 179 61 164 54 A* A MA 86 61 91 63 A* A* SC 70 54 82 62 A A Agg Score: 240 242
