1 BOURNE GRAMMAR SCHOOL BULLETIN Week ending Friday 11 November 2016 From Jonathan Maddox, Headteacher SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS - Report by Mr Ray, Director of PE & Sport On Friday 4 November, Spalding Academy (formerly the Sir John Gleed School) once again provided the location for the South Lincolnshire Schools Cross Country Championships in good weather, and some stunning results were achieved. Taking some 75 students to the event across all age groups, hopes were high and again the students did not disappoint, winning what will hopefully be 7 of the 8 competitions (yet to be confirmed). Whilst the usual front runners finished the races in their now customary top 3 places, it was a delight to see the likes of Charlie Woodward (Year 10) claiming 12th place in the Intermediate Boys (Years 10 and 11), Cora Downing (Year 9) in 8th place in the Junior Girls (Years 8 and 9) and Dylan Snoek (Year 9) claiming 4th in the same age group. Arguably, this has proven to be the most successful competition for individuals in recent years. We expect that the top 20 in each race will be selected for the County Championships on Friday 20 January If this remains the case, it is expected that 56 students from the School will be invited to attend these Championships, topping the 40-plus students we have had in the past. 2 Highlights from Friday s Championships include: - All 12 Year 7 Boys selected finished in the top 20 (17th being the lowest place) - The Intermediate Girls simply dominated, finishing in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th (other schools were participating!) - T h e J u n i o r B o y s a l m o s t m a t c h e d t h e Intermediate Girls, finishing 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th - Of the potential top 3 places in the 8 races (24 in total), Bourne Grammar students claimed 16 of the 24 available The top three Bourne Grammar School finishers in each race were: Year 7 Boys 1st - Harry Hewitt 2nd - Alex Galpin 4th - Joe Garner Year 7 Girls 5th - Tilly Manning 6th - Esme Thorley 8th - Lauren Stuart Year 8 and 9 Boys 1st - Sam Oakley 3rd - Max James 4th - Dylan Snoek Year 8 and 9 Girls 1st - Flo Brill 3rd - Elin James 7th - Maisie Brownlow Year 10 and 11 Boys 1st - Aaron Hunt 3rd - Nandeli Pelembe 12th - Charlie Woodward Year 10 and 11 Girls 1st - Neve Hattee 2nd - Hana Ray 3rd - Abi Cooper Year 12 and 13 Boys 1st - Scott Taylor 2nd - Cameron Everist 4th - Bradley Allan Year 12 and 13 Girls 1st - Alice Cullcut 2nd - Saskia Hunt 3rd - Molly Bennett Well done to all who participated and a special thanks to Alice Callcut (Year 12) who has assisted in the Cross-Country organisation throughout the term and Mike Prosser from Nene Valley Harriers who leads the training at Wednesday s extra-curricular club. HOMEWORK CLUB Homework Club will be running Tuesday nights, but the School needs an accurate register of who is attending each week. BUSES We have received details of a change to Delaine Buses timetable from 5 December The change is for the benefit of Bourne Grammar School students. One of the morning relief services from Stamford will be replaced by a scheduled 202 service, commencing from Helpston at 07:30, serving Bainton, Barnack, Pilsgate and then Stamford and intermediate villages to Bourne. This will balance the afternoon 15: service that already serves these villages beyond Stamford. Parents of students from these villages who have purchased Season Tickets from Delaines have been informed by . Details are now available on Delaines website and will be broadcast on their Twitter feed in due course. "2

3 FORTHCOMING PRODUCTIONS Tickets are now on sale for the Sixth Form production of Arthur Miller s The Crucible and the Christmas Concert. Rehearsals are well underway with a talented cast of Sixth Formers for our production of The Crucible. Under the direction of Messrs Turnham and Moxley, the play will be an intimate and intense version that brings the audience right into the action. Famously, the play tells the story of the witch hunts in 1690s Massachusetts, but as GCSE Drama students will know, the real story is one of suspicious and mistrust in a small community and the resulting division that is created. For Miller, The Crucible was an allegory of the McCarthy investigations into un-american tendancies of Communist sympathisers in the 1950s, an investigation which Miller himself was called before. The play is studied by Year 11 GCSE Drama students who are encouraged to attend one of the performances, but is also relevant for Year 10 Drama students as their exam script. The play runs from Thursday 8 December until Saturday 10 December and each performance starts at 7pm. Tickets cost 6 for adults and 4 for concessions; tickets can be purchased via the School s website or at The Christmas Concert will be the first musical event under the direction of our new Director of Music, Mr Mark Tomlinson. The Concert promises traditional and contemporary Christmas music performed by students. Ticket prices include a drink and mince pie during the interval (adults 6, concessions 4) and can be purchased via the School website or event/ OUTSTANDING POETRY I received the following haiku from Mr Bainton, who felt that Phoebe Bardwell (Year 7), who wrote the poem, showed a superb grasp of metaphor and of the haiku form. Her appreciation of mortality is both mature and delicate. Well done. Haiku The leaves on the trees, Not knowing when to fall - Sorry for your loss ARTWORK Year 13 students are currently focusing on the coursework component of their course, based on the theme My Place in the World ; work by two students has been included in this week s Bulletin. The intention for Jade s piece is Looking at how people have marked their place in the world, leaving behind evidence either unintentionally or intentionally and Lucy s intention for her piece is How the world has shaped me as a person. Cake International is the UK s leading cake-decorating, sugar-craft and baking show, and anybody of any age or experience can enter the cake competitions they host. Rugby Ewan Thomas (Year 10) recently represented the Welsh Exiles U15 Rugby team in South Wales. The Welsh Exiles consist of Welsh qualified players who are based outside of Wales; Ewan qualifies to play for them through his father, who originates from Ebbw Vale. Ewan s brother, James, a former "5

6 student at Bourne Grammar School, also represented the Welsh Exiles in two tournaments. After two trials, Ewan was invited by the WRU to attend an assessment day in October, which culminated in a game watched by Welsh Rugby Union development coaches, where he was selected to play at wing. He performed well, having a few telling runs and a great try-saving tackle. For the last twenty minutes of the game, Ewan reverted to his normal position of scrum half and created a try for his teammate. Ewan plays for the Year 10 Rugby Squad in School, and plays for his club in Spalding. He also represents the U15 development player programmer for Leicester Tigers. "6
