6 Frequently asked questions Here are a list of the most common questions we are asked about the PE and sport at Freemen s. If you have a question which is not on the list, please sport@freemens.org submit your question and we will get back to you within 24 hours. What do we learn in PE? PE lessons cover a variety of activities and sports. Pupils are taught skills, how to analyse performance, to understand the role of health and fitness and to perform in a variety of sports. At Lower 5 (Yr 10) and Upper 5 (Yr 11) pupils are able to study GCSE Sports Science leading onto the A Level PE option in the Sixth Form. How many lessons each week? Each week you will have a minimum of one PE lesson (1 hour) and a double games afternoon (2 hours). Form 1 (Yr 3) and Lower 2 (Yr 4) have an extra PE lesson each week which is used for an extra games session. The timetable is reviewed each year in the summer term ready for September. How many pupils are in my class? PE classes are usually no more than 12 to 15 pupils, each one with their own teacher. Swimming lessons are even lower usually 6 to 8 in a group. Games groups vary according to the sport, however on average group sizes tend to be roughly about 12 to 15 in a group. We work hard to ensure we maintain these low pupil to staff ratios to enable us to offer more personalised learning and attention for the pupils. Will my class be set on ability or mixed? PE, swimming and games classes/sessions will be split on ability where possible to ensure all pupils are pushed at the correct pace, and supported to reach their full potential. Changes in classes will occur usually at half term or at the end of the term. Are my lessons single sex or mixed gender? PE and Swimming lessons for F1 (Yr 3) and Lower 2 (Yr 4) are mixed gender sessions taught by both male and female PE teachers. From Upper 2 (Yr 5) upwards the PE and swimming lessons are taught single sex. Games sessions are taught throughout the Junior and Senior School in single sex groups. When are the fixtures? Fixtures are played during games afternoons, after School and Saturday s. Most of the Saturday fixtures are for Key stage 3, 4 and 5, however there are still some Junior (Key stage 2) fixtures throughout the year. There is an online calendar with all the term s fixtures easily accessible on the School website. 6 LEARN, LEAD, MAKE A DIFFERENCE
7 When are the squad sessions? Most squad sessions occur at lunchtimes for the Junior School (Key stage 2) and after School for the Senior School (including U3 and L4). How do we know if we are playing in a match? All fixtures have a team sheet completed by the teacher in charge. This will be posted online and on the relevant noticeboard at least 72 hours before the fixture. Pupils and parents are encouraged to check the online sports calendar to ensure they are aware of when the fixtures are due to happen. What are match teas? After fixtures pupils are provided with an appropriate match tea to celebrate their fixture with the opposition School. Parents are encouraged to come and watch, they are also provided tea/coffee and biscuits in the Main House. Which Independent Schools do we compete against? We have fixtures against many independent Schools in the Surrey area as well as Schools in neighboring counties. Schools such as Epsom College, St Johns, Caterham School, Reigate Grammar School, Kingston Grammar School, Christ s Hospital, Worth School, Cranleigh and Reeds School to name a few. We compete well with most Schools across the different sports. What are the major team games we play? In your games afternoons you will cover the following games programme. There will be a number of fixtures for each sport and for each year group. Year Group Girls Boys F1 L3 Hockey/Netball/Tennis/Rounders/ Football/Rugby/Cricket (Yr 3 6) Athletics U3 L5 Hockey/Netball/Tennis/Rounders/ Rugby/Football + Rugby 7 s/cricket (Yr 7 10) Athletics U5 U6 Hockey/Netball/Tennis Rugby/Football + Rugby 7 s /Cricket (Yr 11 13) Badminton / squash/ Fencing / aerobics / swimming / Fitness gym / basketball / volleyball / table tennis / cross country + options What other competitive sports are available? There are also a range of sports which enable pupils to represent the School. Fencing, swimming, squash, equestrian, cross country, biathlon, boys tennis, boys athletics. What kit do we need? Pupils are required to wear the correct kit for each activity. All sports kit and equipment must be clearly named on the inside and of all clothing. It is the responsibility of each individual pupil that they have the appropriate kit. All PE kit should be kept in school in the appropriate areas during 7 LEARN, LEAD, MAKE A DIFFERENCE
8 the week to allow for flexibility in the delivery of the curriculum. Those who frequently forget kit however, will face sanctions. See kit list attached. Can we wear jewellery for PE & Games As a department we follow the Surrey school s policy on jewellery: Wearing jewellery, earrings, ear studs (including body piercings) during physical education lessons, other sporting activities or any other form of physical activity should not be allowed for the safety of the wearers & others. If earrings cannot be removed, the pupil should be given another related role, for example a coach or official, which avoids physical contact. As newly pierced ears can take up to six weeks before sleepers/studs can be removed, arrange piercings at the start of the school holidays. What happens to lost property? Any equipment or sports clothing left by the pupils will be sorted in the following manner. Every two weeks all items will be taken to Philp House to be organised and either re distributed or put into the second hand shop. Any sports lost property will be kept for at least two weeks in the sports hall foyer (cupboard under the stairs). What is the policy if we are injured or forget our kit? In an attempt to encourage the pupils to look after their personal possessions and to develop their organisational skills, the PE Department implements a Kit Mark Policy. Pupils are expected to have all the correct kit for every lesson. If this is not the case they will be given a kit mark, and further action may be taken. If your child is Off Games and cannot actively take part in the lesson they must have a letter from home explaining why they need to be excused from the lesson. When your child arrives at their lesson they must give the letter to the relevant member of staff. Pupils should bring appropriate PE/Games clothing and footwear to allow them to contribute to the activity (e.g. School tracksuit). Do we have to wear a mouthguard? All pupils will be required to wear a mouthguard for every hockey and rugby session. The School organise a fitting service in the autumn and summer by the dental company OPRO, where the pupils will be given an opportunity to have a professional fitted mouthguard by a qualified dentist. It is expected that pupils arrive in September with a mouthguard, usually a cheap boil and mold in the mouth type until their OPRO mouthguard is delivered. Can our parents come and watch us play sport? Parents are actively encouraged to come and watch all the fixtures, whether they are internal House matches or fixtures against other Schools. Parents are provided with tea/coffee and biscuits after the fixtures conclude; this is hosted in Main House. Is playing sport for the School compulsory? Even on Saturdays? The School policy for representing your School is that if you are selected you are expected to perform for the School. We believe representing your School, supporting your team mates is a vital part of your rounded education and therefore is given a very high profile. Whether fixtures are midweek or Saturday you will be expected to represent your School/House and always give of 8 LEARN, LEAD, MAKE A DIFFERENCE
9 your best. On occasions we do understand that students may have other commitments therefore please notify the relevant member of staff as soon as possible preferably two weeks prior to the fixture. If students are ill or injured on a Saturday morning, they should contact their captain directly and the sports member of staff responsible for their year group/team, please could they do this before 8am where possible.. addresses for staff can be found on the schools' website. What are House sports? All pupils throughout the School get to compete for their house (Gresham, Whittington or Hale) in a variety of sports. All the successes on the games field are awarded points which go towards House trophies at the end of the School year. All the pupils feel a sense of pride being part of and representing their House. The culmination being the annual Sports Day held in the summer term.
