3 Welcome to Mallow College of Further Education (MCFE) and thank you for taking time to read through the Evening Education prospectus for Autumn Evening Education is the new rebranded department of MCFE, the largest further education college in North Cork. A wide range of programmes are on offer, varying from accredited and general interest programmes available every Spring and Autumn. The programmes on offer are adapted each term to suit the needs and interests of learners and industry. The programmes enable learners to develop new skills in a specific area which can aid future employments. MCFE values the importance of education, and the evening education department follows a theme of Opening Minds, Creating Futures. Paramount to the success of MCFE is the building of strong relationships between learners, tutors and local community groups/organisations. welcome Recognising both the dynamic and complex nature of the challenges and opportunities presented in the workplace, we strive, not just to respond to them, but to anticipate them. The vision for the Evening Education Department is to continue forging links with industry and developing programmes that aid local industry needs and create opportunities for learners to develop new skill sets. Similarly, we offer a wide range of non-certified programmes through our hobby and general interest courses. Autumn 2017 will also see the introduction of a variety of new courses across the spectrum. Registrations can be made in a number of ways with online being the preferred method. 7 InformatIon/enrolment evening Information/ Enrolment for Evening Education Programmes for Autumn 2017 will take place at on Monday 11th September 2017 from 7pm to 8pm at the Mallow College, Annabella Campus. Cork. The campus is equipped with highly qualified facilities to ensure high standards of education for teaching and learning. There is free parking onsite as well as a newly renovated modern canteen. MCFE is located just a 5 minute walk from both the bus stop and train station. 8 General Interest terms and conditions - Students are expected to supply their own materials. - Formation of classes depends on sufficient demand. - QQI Certification Fees (where applicable) are not included in course fee. - The times/duration of courses may vary at Directors discretion. - If a class is not formed fees will be returned without demand or transferred to another course by request. 10 occupational first aid (First Aid Response) Times: Monday 6.30pm to 9.30pm Duration: 9 Weeks Start Date: 25th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 200 Accreditation: Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) The course is for anyone wanting to learn how to recognise and care for people with life-threatening injuries before the arrival of healthcare practitioners. It is also for people who require basic first aid training as part of their job. This could include non-healthcare personnel, sports coaches, teachers and parents as a very small example. General Interest Who s it for? There are currently no prerequisites for this course. Students should be physically well enough to carry out CPR as well as other practical skills, such as attempting to relieve the blockage in someone who is choking, placing somebody in the recovery position and putting bandages on injured limbs. Certification This certificate will be valid for 2 years. Topics covered on this course include: - Head injuries - Epilepsy - Contacting the emergency services - Respiratory emergencies - Unconsciousness - Diabetes - Examination of casualty - Asphyxia and its causes - Fainting - Poisoning - Diagnosis and principles of treatment - Asthma - Recovery position - Fractures - Emergency first aid kits - contents Renewal In order to maintain your qualification after your two-year certification period you will be required to undertake a refresher course. The refresher course consists of a two-day course designed to refresh the knowledge and skills you learned from your initial training. You must have a valid First Aid Response certificate in order to partake of this course. Interior Design Times: Monday 7pm to 8.30pm Duration: 8 Weeks Start Date: 25th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 90 This course will appeal to anyone to wants to reap the rewards of a beautiful home.with the help of an expert tutor learn how to transform your home by using colours, light and materials to best effect. Create your own Mood Board - which is an arrangement of images, materials and pieces of text intended to evoke or project a particular style or concept. 10

11 the organic vegetable Garden - A Beginners Guide Times: Monday 7pm to 9pm Duration: 10 Weeks Start Date: 25th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 140 This course is ideally suited to new gardeners who want to "grow their own" in 2017 and beyond. Learn all you need to know for a beautiful and successful organic vegetable garden. Modules include the following amongst others. - Selecting an appropriate site. - Preparation and soil fertility. - What to grow - Sowing and harvesting. - Organic pest and disease control. - Organic weed control. first steps in Digital Photography Times: Tuesday 7.30pm to 9.30pm Duration: 10 Weeks Start Date: 26th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 140 General Interest This course is suitable for individuals who wish to acquire skills and knowledge in digital compact cameras. The course involves a practical introduction to the key functions that are used in photography, which are available on most digital cameras. Photography composition guidelines are also covered to increase the balance and impact of your photographs. The second half of the course covers retrieval and storage of your photographs from your camera. Finally, image manipulation techniques are explored to further enhance your photography. Bridge for Beginners Times: Tuesday 7pm to 9pm Duration: 8 Weeks Start Date: 26th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 110 Bridge for Beginners this programme is suitable for individuals or partnerships who wish to have complete understanding of ACOL bridge together with the ability to compete at club level. this class is designed to follow on from Bridge for Beginners course. it will cater for people who have played for a while and need to brush up their knowledge and use of ACOL system. each lesson deals with a different subject. Comprehensive notes will be provided. Develop an understanding of the fundamentals of the game of bridge from a student s perspective, to having the ability to play both for fun or at a competitive level. Bridge is a wonderful way to improve your mental well-being as it stimulates the brain and enriches your physical health. Bridge is fun, is a social game and an excellent way to make new friends. unlike other sports, you can take this game up as a child and play it with the enthusiasm when you reach 90 or indeed you can take the game up at 90! 11

12 first steps in crochet Times: Wednesday 7pm to 9pm Duration: 8 Weeks Start Date: 27th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 110 This course will get participants used to the basic stitches and how to hold a hook and yarn. General Interest Crochet is fast, fun and funky and it's easy to make your own accessories once you know the basics. This course will involve the basic crochet techniques, the execution of various stitches and involve completing small projects. Materials 3.5 Crochet Hook and one ball of double knitting wool. new next steps in crochet Times: Thursday 7pm to 9pm Duration: 8 Weeks Start Date: 28th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 110 This course will get participants used to the beyond basic stitches and for those who have a knowledge of crochet. Crochet is fast, fun and funky and it's easy to make your own accessories once you know the basics. This course will involve the basic crochet techniques, the execution of various stitches and involve completing small projects. new D.I.y. - the basics Times: Tuesday 7pm to 9pm Duration: 10 Weeks Start Date: 26th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 140 This course is ideal for a D.I.Y. enthusiast or for someone that is looking the basic skills. - Unblocking a drain. - Wallpapering. - Changing a plug. - Tiling. - Changing a fuse. - Basic Plumbing. - Changing the lock on a door. - Essential Tools. - Painting. - Other handy maintenance skills. 12

13 new woodwork for Beginners Times: Wednesday 6.30pm to 9pm Duration: 10 Weeks Start Date: 27th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 200 Please Note Materials Are Included in Price This course is idle for a woodwork enthusiast who is looking to learn the basic skills. The course will entail making a specific project such as a table or chair which will be completed over the 10-week period. - Learn how to use basic tools both manual and electronic. - Learn about the various woodwork joints. - Explore the different types of hardwoods and softwoods. - Learn the basics of sanding and finishing. - Learn how to clamp, glue and assembly a project. At the end of the 10 weeks you will have a completed project and a new set of woodwork skills. creative writing 1 General Interest Times: Monday 7.15pm to 9.15pm Duration: 10 Weeks Start Date: 25th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 140 This ten-week course will give participants the tools they need to tell the story or stories they have been longing to tell. To do so effectively, participants will need to keep seven balls in the air at all times: Plot, Structure, Style, Characterization, Setting, Dialogue and Tension/Pace. Each week, classes will focus on one of these elements, so that participants will have a good grasp of how to use them to the advantage of their work. The two-hour sessions will be loosely divided into three stages: firstly, the tutor will use their own notes and advise the group how to tackle one of these specific aspects of writing; then set a writing exercise, allowing about twenty minutes, and each participant will then read their piece to the group for critique and discussion. creative writing 2 Times: Tuesday 7.15pm to 9.15pm Duration: 10 Weeks Start Date: 26th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 140 This course is aimed at writers who wish to work under guidance on specific projects or pieces in order to hone their craft and bring out their very best writing. it is not necessary, but advisable, to taken Creative Writing part 1 first or to have some experience of writing. We will work on developing your unique voice, refining your specific style, editing your own work, and the nuts and bolts of publication: targeting the right market, presentation, submissions, competitions and how and where to achieve publication. We will cover all genres: fiction, flash fiction, short stories, memoir, poetry, children's and young adult fiction. these classes will be supportive, enlightening, collaborative and fun, and at the end of this course you will have the skills necessary to best achieve your creative ambitions 13

14 Painting & Drawing for Beginners General Interest Times: Tuesday 7pm to 9pm Duration: 10 Weeks Start Date: 26th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 140 This programme is suitable for individuals with no previous knowledge of art and who wish to develop their artistic and sketching skills through a variety of mediums in a relaxed and supportive setting. - Develop observation skills working from still life using various pencils. - Understanding basic drawing techniques such as shape/form/texture/composition. - Knowing your medium (oil paint / water colour / pastels / charcoal) learn the different properties and create a finished work of art. - Having completed this programme, learners will have an overall understanding of the creative process and complete a selection of original art works. This programme may progress onto the Advanced Painting programme at MCFE. Materials Required A set of brushes, acrylic paints, a rag, a jar, a small photograph which you would like to paint and a canvas. advanced Painting Times: Wednesday 7pm to 9pm Duration: 10 Weeks Start Date: 27th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 140 This programme is suitable for individuals who wish to further develop their artistic skills and explore the process of creating art on a more intensive level. Learners will receive tuition that is based on their individual artistic goals and abilities. - Observation: Learners will have the opportunity to further develop their observational skills and use these abilities to visually record their observations on paper. - Painting: A thorough exploration of different methods of using paint and instruction in the understanding of various painting mediums and their individual qualities. - Colour Theory: An investigation into the nature of colour and light. - Drawing: Advanced drawing techniques using pencil, charcoal, and ink. - Introduction to further education in art, funding bodies and art workshops. - Open class discussions throughout the programme on work in progress. 15 new Drawing QQI Level 5 Times: Monday 6.30pm to 9.30pm Duration: 12 Weeks Start Date: 25th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 250 Accreditation: QQI Level 5 5N1862 Please Note Materials, Equipment or QQI Fee Are NOT Included in Price This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to acquire and apply drawing processes and techniques relevant to vocational and personal development. - To facilitate the learner to develop the skills to use drawing as an effective, creative and expressive communication tool. - To enable the learner to explore a wide range of drawing techniques, including linear, tonal, gestural, perspective, weight/volume and form. - To explore with the learner, the safe use of a wide range of drawing media, in two and three dimensions, including the observational interpretation of natural and manufactured forms. - To enable the learner to evaluate the approaches to drawing within a range of art movements, traditions, cultures and technologies. - To enable the learner to use drawing to develop concepts, visualise solutions and communicate ideas. - To facilitate the learner to develop the critical judgement necessary to analyse and produce consciously composed original drawings. General Interest new Painting QQI Level 5 Times: Thursday 6.30pm to 9.30pm Duration: 12 Weeks Start Date: 28th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 250 Accreditation: QQI Level 5 5N1302 Please Note Materials, Equipment or QQI Fee Are NOT Included in Price This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in a wide range of painting techniques and media and to foster creativity and selfexpression. - To enable the learner to explore colour and the formal elements through painting. - To enable the learner to explore and employ a variety of traditional and experimental painting techniques and processes. - To facilitate the learner to develop technical skills, knowledge and safe practices in a variety of painting media, techniques and styles. - To enable the learner to use painting as a means of communication and expression. - To enable the learner to engage in enquiring, creative, original, personal and sustainable responses in their work. - To facilitate the learner to contextualise their work and develop informed critical awareness and aesthetic judgement. - To enable to learner to use painting in a variety of art, creative craft and design contexts. 15

16 Dog Grooming QQI Level 5 Times: Tues/Thurs 6.30pm to 9.30pm Duration: 20 Weeks Start Date: 26th/28th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 380 Accreditation: QQI Level 5 5N0752 This programme module aims to provide the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence in a verity if grooming methods in various small animals within a grooming facility. General Interest - Gain an understanding of the body language in small animals and exercise appropriate conduct within the grooming facility. - Develop the knowledge in the ear care, nails, structure, function and appearance of the skin and coat, in order to be confident in the evaluation of common abnormalities. - Collect information through examination, observation and obtaining information from the owner/guardian of the animal to assist in a grooming procedure. - Demonstrate the skills in different grooming techniques. Have the understanding in the selection of suitable tools and products for different coat types, the appropriate handling of tools and the completion of procedures required for a variety of animals within a grooming facility. - Deal appropriately with the animals, the public and equipment following the health and hygiene guidelines outlined within a grooming facility. The course runs 1 night a week for 20 weeks, students have the option to take the course on Tuesday or Thursday night. new animal welfare QQI Level 5 Times: Wednesday 6.30pm to 9.30pm Duration: 12 Weeks Start Date: 27th September, 2017 Tuition Fee: 250 Accreditation: QQI Level 5 5N0753 This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to develop an understanding of the process of domestication of animals and the provisions needed to promote physical and mental wellbeing in domestic and captive animals. - To explore the processes of evolution that have influenced species diversification and global distribution. - The tutor will create an awareness of Animal Welfare issues in Ireland and abroad. - The tutor will explore the needs of different domestic species with regard to maintaining animal health. Similarly the learner will gain an understanding the Animal Welfare legislation in Ireland. - The tutor will explore with the learner the history of domestication and its impact on the behaviour, diet and socialisation of domestic species. 16
