10 Teachers Instructions (1/2) Criss-Cross Questions group. Students should use coins or other markers, but each pair / group should use a different marker. The object is to be the first pair / team to put five markers in a straight row, either vertically, horizontally or diagonally. When all is ready, one team (or student) decides on a square where it would like to place a marker. For example, Worksheet 1 (Regular Questions Past Tense), a team may want to put its marker on square # Student ability: High Beginner ~ Intermediate Approximate length of lesson: 45+ Number of students necessary: 2+ Preferred age/maturity: JHS, HS, College, Adult Type of lesson: Pair / Small Group Activity * * * * * Language Target: Depending on which worksheet is selected, students can practice Past, Present or Future tenses (including a combination of tenses on some of the worksheets). To do this lesson, students in pairs or small teams play a kind of Tic-Tac-Toe against each other by asking questions and eliciting the correct answers. Setting Up: Make enough copies of the worksheet for every pair or every group of students. If students are not familiar with the game of Tic-Tac-Toe, a quick run through on the blackboard will help them understand. Normally, Tic-Tac-Toe uses nine squares in a grid. These worksheets use 25 squares (5 x 5). Just in case, it might be a good idea to play Tic-Tac-Toe once or twice with a 5 x 5 grid. Getting Started: Pair or group the students and hand one worksheet to each pair / This is a good place to begin since it is in the middle of the worksheet. In order to claim that square, Team A must ask a question using the exact words as printed on the worksheet. In this case, Why did.... Any question is OK as long as it begins with Why did... Why did you wear that shirt today? Why did the chicken cross the road? Why did your boyfriend give you that bracelet? Etc. Note: The more difficult the question, the better chance a team has of placing its marker on the grid. Team B can contest the question if it feels the question was grammatically incorrect. If so, Team A can not place the marker on the square, and then the play becomes Team B. (If neither team can agree on the validity of the correctness, they should ask the teacher. If Team A asks a question that is grammatically correct, a marker is then place on the appropriate square. Then, Team B must answer the question correctly both in terms of meaning and grammar. Team A has the Criss-Cross Questions [Lesson Collection Set #3 Lesson 20a~i]

11 α Teachers Instructions (2/2) responsibility of listening to the answer and judging its validity. If the answer is grammatically incorrect or- if the answer is factually incorrect or- if the Team B s answer is I don t know, Team B forfeits its turn (and no marker can be placed. Team A may then try to place another marker on a different square by asking a grammatically correct question. If Team B does answer correctly, then it takes the next turn by asking a question using the words printed on a different target square within the grid. The play continues as stated above with each team alternating turns, listening carefully to both question and answers and deciding on the correctness on both the content and grammar. Variation 1: The game becomes much easier if four markers (rather than five) are required to win. Variation 2: For higher ability students, allow teams to challenge the opponent s marker (in other words, to be able to remove an opponent s marker from the grid). To do this, the challenger (the challenging team) selects a square where the defender already has placed a marker, For example, in Worksheet 1, Square Number 5 has this question starter: When were.... The challenger asks the defender a question using these words, e.g.,: When were my parents married? When were thumbtacks invented? The same rules apply as given above, for the challenger to take square Number 5, the question must be grammatically correct and the defender s answer must be inaccurate (in content or grammar) or the defender is not able to answer the question. Variation 3: Depending on the English ability of the students, encourage students to also use negative verbs as well as the ones printed on the worksheet. For example, Who did / didn t... Why was / wasn t..., etc..
