3 DIRECTORS COLUMN I am writing this on January 1, 2014, but by the time you read it, it will be almost February. By now we will be already busy working at the State Capitol. This year s session is going to be bittersweet for me. I have heard that neither one of my representatives will be running again in the fall. They will be surely missed. When I moved to White County and joined Upper Cumberland Charter in 1998, they already had a good working relationship with Senator Burks. If you go into her office at Legislative Plaza, you ll see a photo of her on an Abate member s motorcycle in Cookeville. She has always supported us in everything we ve done. I didn t meet Representative Curtiss until a little later. Some friends from McMinnville took me into his office and introduced me. Just a few years ago, I found out we were neighbors. He lives only a couple of miles from my place. Since then, he has been over here to pick up donations. He has always promised us that if the Freedom Bill got to the floor, he would support it. These are the relationships you need with your representatives. It s not enough for you to know them. They need to know you. Come to the Capitol and meet them. Find out what they re involved with at home and support that. Work closely with their campaign during election. All of this is the very definition of a grass roots organization. Well, I can t wait to see how this session plays out. I hope to see you all in Nashville. And by all means, thank the Legislators that support us. Want to be a part of this amazing organization? 4 "YOUR RIGHTS -YOUR RIDE" By the time everyone has read this we will be knee deep in the 2014 Tennessee Legislative session. YOU showing up to lobby on YOUR charter's day is the most important part of this year's efforts. Call and make an appointment with your Senator and Representative for that day. The list of Charter and Board lobby days is at the bottom of this report. This doesn't mean you can't help on other days as well. Every CMT/ABATE, Inc. member is part of the lobby team and welcome jump in at any time. For those that haven't heard, Wayne Shaub is now a registered lobbyist for the organization. along with me, Tony Dabbs. Wayne was gracious enough to help last year on some rather short notice. He's not new at this and is also very well respected on The Hill and by myself. If you get the opportunity, please thank him. His contact is wshaub@bellsouth.net. At the time of this writing the official start of session is a few days off, but it is time to look ahead to 2015 and beyond. We have all watched the changes going on with insurance. I would like to hear from anyone that has been denied coverage or benefits due to the fact they ride. If you have an actual letter of denial would be perfect. Don't panic yet, this is just some preliminary research. We are looking at a possible legislative retreat and strategy session for the summer. This gives everyone not only time to ponder proposed legislation, but also time to look around and see what actually needs to be done. Yes, repeal of the helmet law is our foundation, but it is up to us to take charge of our own rights and safety. How would you feel if we didn't have to wear a helmet, but were told we had to ride Vespas and only on secondary roads? ( Before I make the Vespa riders mad, I do own one.) Ask other riders about things that they think should be changed. There are no bad ideas, although some should have a tad more thought put into them. I can't stress enough the importance of your participation in the political process. Get to know the candidates and support those you know will support you. Lastly and most importantly, REGISTER TO VOTE AND EXERCISE THAT BLOOD BOUGHT RIGHT! (If by some chance you have lost that right, you can get it restored.) If you don't vote, you don't have a dog in this hunt and no right to bitch about anything in the first place. RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED BY Tony Dabbs Interim Legislative Director CMT/ABATE, Inc. themotorsickledoc@yahoo.com Feb. 11- Keg County 12- Knoxville and At-Large 18- Dickson/Humphreys 19- Board of Directors 25- Wheels of Thunder and Northeast 26- Tennessee Valley LOBBY DAYS Mar. 4- Sumner County and Robertson County 5- Caney Fork 11- Smith/Wilson/Stones River 12- Piney River 18- Montgomery County 19- Nashville and Music City 25- Upper Cumberland Charter Directors and/or charter legislative contacts, as well as board members, please call contact Tony Dabbs at or themotorsickledoc@yahoo.com to solidify plans and meeting places for your lobby day 4

6 When I look back at the things the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has had to deal with it seems like a joke. You spend your hard earned cash to buy a motorcycle, then you have to spend the time to get legislation passed in order to work on your own property? The government organization (CDC) whose job is to keep an eye on disease has now decided guns and motorcycles are an epidemic? And lets not forget the idiots that say I must feed my hawg the same corn I feed my hogs. What the hell has happened to this country? The bad part is, it is no joke. This is actually going on with our government's blessing. Foolishness like this just takes the time and money we could be using to make the roads safer for motorcyclists. Just imagine if the $7.9 million spent on pulling folks over random DNA testing for the feds had of been spent on riders' and drivers' education? If safety is the goal, why not spend the money on something that really works? The funny part of all this is, THEY THINK WE ARE CRAZY FOR RIDING A MOTORCYCLE! Give me a break. I'm beginning to think we have elected a bunch of lunatics. The more I think about it, the madder I get. Read the MRF REPORTS if you get a chance. Maybe you will get mad enough to join. Tony M Dabbs MRF State Rep for Tennessee themotorsickledoc@yahoo.com CMT/ABATE, Inc. is not a Biker Club, but a non-profit, political organization that was formed to preserve freedom and safety for all Tennesseans who enjoy motorcycling. Our major goals are to modify existing laws that are detrimental to motorcycle safety and enjoyment, and to enact new legislation in support of all motorcyclists who ride in Tennessee. If you are concerned about preserving personal freedom and motorcycle safety, please join us. 6
