1 December 2007 Memos HAPPY HOLIDAYS Our hearts and prayers go out to the many families in the 4-H community that have been affected by the fire disasters. We at county have been flooded with harrowing stories of survival and perseverance by our many volunteers and their family members. To help our devastated communities we have reopened the Fire Recovery Fund which was started after the Cedar Fire disaster. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION San Diego County 4-H If clubs and families wish to donate to the Fire Recovery Fund please make checks payable to the San Diego County Leaders Council. We will be using these funds to help replace items lost in the fire and to help families get back on their feet. We know that there are things that just can t be replaced but maybe we can bring back some of the little things that will make it easier. We have received messages of support and declarations of donations from all over the country. Please, if you know of someone or some family that is need let us know, maybe we can get them the help. 2 Orion s Horsemanship Song Orion is a member of Horsemanship for the Handicapped. Orion s love and joy at being able to participate in such a program comes out in this song that she wrote. This was sent in by Dave Carter who runs the program. For clubs looking for community service, the Horsemanship for the Handicapped program is always looking for folks to come out to help their members experience the bliss of riding a horse. 3 An Article by Darren Michalczuk about offering choices Everyone hates the feeling of being trapped. This often comes from situations that feel like there is no freedom to choose. When we have no choice, this is a very frustrating experience. Children feel the same way. That is why it is important to give them the freedom to choose with very specific limitations. Imagine being in a classroom of elementary students when the teachers asks if anyone wants some ice cream. After the noise of excitement dies, she then asks what kind they want. There will probably be more flavours than students named, especially if this goes unchecked. Through a long and confusing democratic process, a generic flavour like chocolate is chosen. Although this seems like a good choice, many of the kids are upset because their flavour was not chosen. Grumbling and disappointment spread through the classroom. This doesn t seem logical after the promise of ice cream, but it does happen. Now imagine the kids have two choices, vanilla ice cream or no ice cream. Those who complain or talk about a flavour they aren t getting simply do not get any. This negative response will quickly disappear the next time if the teacher holds true to the consequence. It is simple, quick and everyone is happy. Giving choices isn t an easy skill at first. First you have to be able to give two choices that will have a positive outcome either way. A boy who is expected to be in bed by 9 o clock can be given two choices. He can go to bed at 8:30 or stay up until nine. Of course he will choose nine o clock, but the freedom of choice will make it seem as if he conned his parents. Do you want to do your homework now, or after supper? Do you want to study Lights and Shadows or Hearing and Sound this month? Do you want to swallow your pills or have them mixed in with some juice? What kind of vegetables do you want in your lunch? These are all questions that will leave both parties with a sense of control and satisfaction. The second challenge is being able to stick to the choices. The inevitable response from a child at some point is to come up with an option that isn t given. The child may feel clever and challenge the choices. Without a firm stance on the guidelines, the child will start to manipulate the system. A simple and repeated that is not a choice is often enough. The third challenge is to reward the choices. It is not everyday that we thank kids for eating vegetables, doing homework or speaking to us respectfully. Often times we assume these things should be done without question. As parents or teachers, we need to take the time to thank kids for making good choices in life. It helps them to understand what makes a good person. Giving choices is something that takes practice and patience. Speaking from experience, you ll notice the positive effects right away. 4 2006 SAN DIEGO COUNTY JUNIOR LEADERSHIP CAMP CAMP Fox January 25-27, 2008 This conference is open to all 4-H members in grades 6, 7, 8 only. A member does not have to be a Junior Leader to attend. Chaperones must be a minimum of 25 years of age. The Conference is organized and conducted by the San Diego County Teen Council. Delegates will participate in sessions/workshops/activities that will help them develop leadership skills and increase their knowledge of 4-H! WHEN: Friday- Sunday, January CHECK IN: 5 p.m. -8 p.m., Friday, January 25 CHECK OUT: 12:00 noon, Sunday, January 27 (Cannot leave before noon) Delegates will not be allowed to leave the conference for any reason once they have checked in. If you cannot stay, please do not register -NO EXCEPTIONS. No late check-in. WHERE: Camp Fox COST: $ Includes Friday night snacks, 3 meals on Saturday, and breakfast Sunday. $45.00 Session Leaders Chaperones are free PRESENTATIONS: Members giving presentation must fill out a session application and attend a mandatory audition. No exceptions! Sessions should be new, with no repeats from the previous two years. Session applications are due by January 11th. All Camp and chaperone applications are due by January 11th at 5:00 p.m. in the county 4-H Office. ACCOMMODATIONS: Cabins with bunk beds; central showers and restrooms and a dining hall. Bring a sleeping bag, pillow, and warm blankets. All delegates will be assigned to a cabin and chaperone. Please request only one roommate. Requests for more then one roommate or for clubs cannot be honored and will not be forwarded to the registration committee. Every attempt is made to honor roommate requests, however, it is usually impossible to honor all requests. To improve your chances, have the person you request as a roommate, request you as a roommate. Delegates are assigned to cabins and will not be reassigned at the camp. If, for medical reasons, a delegate must be roomed with a specific chaperone or with the camp nurse, write the chaperone¹s name or nurse in the roommate request space and attach a brief explanation signed by a parent, guardian or adult leader. Requests for both a delegate roommate and a chaperone cannot be honored. Delegates are expected to participate in the assigned sessions. Part of the learning process for the conference comes from meeting new people and sharing ideas and experiences! DRESS: Warm camp clothes -jeans, T -shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, comfortable shoes. Casual, but warm. There will be a dance on Saturday evening. Bring towels, washcloths, etc. TRANSPORTATION: All participants must provide their own transportation to and from the conference. Conference limit is 50 delegates minimum or 100 delegates maximum. Reserve your space now!!! Please include a separate sheet of paper with the name of the club or individual on the check, check number and a list of delegates being paid for. Reminder: your Club will be required to send Chaperones if you have more than 2 (two) members attending the Conference. We need adult Chaperones (male and female but particularly males) 2 per 8 members of same gender. Contact the 4-H office for more information at (858) Free Erosion Control Assistance During times of wildfire disaster, the County of San Diego offers residents of unincorporated areas soil erosion control devices and expert advice on their installation. These devices will be available at four Erosion Control Homeowner Assistance (ECHA) centers. The ECHA centers will be located at the Valley Center Road Station, Ramona Road Station, Dulzura Fire Department, and Fallbrook Ingold Baseball Fields. The Bonita center at the Sunnyside Fire Department has closed due to limited response.
