2 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAMMES VISA INFORMATION Apply for a Visa in Due Course! International students who need a visa should make sure to take the time factor into account when applying for a visa. Experience has shown that the it can two to three months between applying for the visa and the visa being granted in your home country, assuming all of the application documents were completely and correctly submitted to the German representation in the home country. Bodies Responsible for Issuing Visas Please apply for a visa at an embassy or a consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany in your home country. Financing Your Stay Students and academics coming to Germany must prove that they have the necessary funds to cover the costs of their study or research period, including living expenses. This evidence has to be produced as part of your visa application to the German Embassy in your home country as well as at the Foreigners' Registration Office in Germany. Students must prove that they have sufficient financial resources to pay for their study period (incl. accommodation and living costs). If your study abroad period is being funded by third parties, e.g. by your parents, you must provide a letter by your parents, your guardian or sponsor stating that your fees and maintenance costs are guaranteed ("Verpflichtungserklärung"/Statement of Liability). Furthermore, a bank statement or letter from your or your sponsor's bank is to be provided, stating that sufficient funds are available to cover the costs of your studies and living expenses. This evidence is to be presented at the German Embassy in your home country (please note that all documents must be certified by a notary or the Embassy). If you can prove that you hold a scholarship, this is usually also sufficient to be eligible for an entry visa; alternatively, you can also open a "blocked" bank account ("Sperrkonto") with sufficient funding for your stay, i.e. a sufficiently funded account which allows you to withdraw a limited sum per month. Your monthly income must be at least EUR per month, a sum which has to be guaranteed through the above mentioned documents when applying for your visa and your residence permit. If you wish to take up work whilst studying in Aachen, your income is considered a supplement but does not count toward the minimum income you must guarantee. Applying for the Residence Permit The visa is generally valid for a few weeks when you enter Germany so that you have enough time to apply for the residence permit. You must however apply in due time: dealing with the application procedure one month before the expiry date is strongly recommended by the Immigration Office. You should apply for the residence permit some days after having registered your address if it is absolutely necessary. Do not enter Germany with a tourist visa, as it cannot be changed into a residence permit for studies! Even with an admission certificate to a German university, without the proper visa, you will be required to return to your home country. Please refer to the following webpages for further information on visa regulations: Auswärtiges Amt RWTH Aachen Immigration Office

4 German Language Courses for RWTH English Master Programs Information for new Master Students Congratulations on being accepted to one of RWTH Aachen University s Englishtaught Master Programs! An integral part of your studies is the requirement to demonstrate knowledge of German by the end of your two-year program. We hope you see this both as a challenge and as an opportunity to become part of the University s academic community and perhaps later to take advantage of career opportunities in Germany. The Language Center s German Language Master Program is designed to help you achieve this goal. We offer an intensive, year-round set of courses for both beginners and advanced students to help you prepare for the German Language Examination for Students in English Master Programs (DSM). The examination includes an oral skills component and tests students reading, writing and comprehension skills in areas particularly relevant to their course of study and careers. Students who pass the exam also have the possibility of attending further German language courses at the Language Center. Students with the appropriate level of German knowledge are eligible for an exemption (see below). This document contains information to help you get started with your German courses. If you still have questions, we are happy to assist you in any way we can. Good luck and hope to see you in September! Structure of the Program For the majority of students who have no previous knowledge of German, the program path looks like this: Level A1 A2.1 A2.2 B1 DSM September: 4-week intensive phase of 20 hours of lessons a week Winter Semester: 4 hours a week from October to February March: 3-week intensive phase of 15 hours a week Summer Semester: 4 hours a week from April to July July: DSM exam (stating B1 level) - completion of the program RWTH Aachen, Sprachenzentrum der Philosophischen Fakultät, Eilfschornsteinstraße 15, Aachen Telefon: Telefax: info@sz.rwth-aachen.de Web:
5 Course Program Regulations The standard German language program for international master students takes two semesters (A1 B1 level). Students attend the German courses (A1 level) in the intensive phase in September and complete the program in the subsequent summer with a B1-level by passing the German Language Exam for Master Students (DSM). If students start with a higher level than A1, the duration of instruction is shortened accordingly. For further important information, please consult our website: Important note for late-arrivals: If you arrive late in Aachen due to visa delay, please note that we only offer beginner s courses in September. You can only start in October if you have achieved at least a level of A2.1 in the results of the Language Center s placement test. We therefore highly recommend that you make arrangements to arrive in time to begin in September unless you are absolutely certain that you will have level A2.1. Information regarding enrolment procedures and placement tests for late-arrivals will be provided via info@sz.rwth-aachen.de. DSM Exemptions Students are eligible for an exemption from the DSM if they can show proof of equivalent German knowledge. The following certificates are recognised: Goethe Institute Zertifikat B1: Zertifikat Deutsch or higher issued by institutions accredited by the Goethe Institute TestDaF TDN 3 or higher Your grades on these certificates will be forwarded to the Registrar s Office. Please contact the Master program via and arrange an appointment. Please note that no certificates can be approved in September or October Appointments begin in November 2015 at the earliest. Students who choose this option may not attend courses in the Intensive Phase and thus need not come to the enrolment. You are welcome to attend other courses at your level in our standard German language program. Please consult: Special Information for the Erasmus Mundus Program EUMI and the Erasmus Mundus Program CEMACUBE: Master students enrolled in these programs need not write a final exam. You will receive a grade based upon regular attendance (80%) and the results of three inclass tests. Students must attend either an intensive course in September (80 hours) or a 4-hour per week course during the Winter Semester at the Language Center. There are no beginner courses for students in the Summer Semester. The A1 Certificate from the Goethe Institute is recognised as equivalent. 8 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAMMES ACCOMMODATION Aachen has about 250,000 inhabitants, 45,000 of them are students, and only 5,000 of them live in student residences. Most of the students live in private sector accommodation. In Germany it is not common that students are allocated a dormitory room along with the admission. Aachen has a beautiful old town center and it is very safe and easy to get around, e.g. with the well-organized bus system that students can use free of charge with their semester tickets. Since the RWTH Aachen University is not a campus university in the typical sense, students may have to travel between different buildings variously located throughout the city, e.g. by bus or by bike. Due to the well infrastructure, students may not only look for apartments, located centrally in the city, but also in surrounding districts (e.g. Burtscheid, Kohlscheid, Haaren, Brand). We will be glad to assist you in finding a place as good as we can. Below you will find the recommendations for the first steps you should take. You can also find all information and further links on our homepage: 1st step: Register in the waiting list for a student dormitory! - Student dormitories We recommend that you apply immediately for a room in Aachen since the waiting lists are quite long. You may apply at 3 dormitories the maximum. Please visit our website to find further guidance. 2nd step: Arrange housing for the first nights in Aachen! - Short-term accommodation or sublets There are several hostels and budget hotels in Aachen for the initial weeks. Please make a reservation for your first nights in Aachen as soon as possible, as these places are extremely busy in the summer months. 3rd step: Arrange long-term accommodation after arrival! - Shared flats and private sector accommodation - alternatives to student dormitories If you were not allocated a place in a student residence (step 1) by mid-july, be prepared to look for private sector accommodation. We recommend booking a sublet or short-term accommodation (step 2) and continuing your search for a long-term accommodation after arrival. You might also find help by student unions. On our homepage you can find an overview of web portals providing assistance with finding accommodation. Most web portals have a similar structure: By way of a search screen, users can specify search criteria, such as the city and desired apartment size. Please note: All admitted students that have sent back the participation agreement on time will be contacted in the first week of July regarding the accommodation once again. We will assist you in finding accommodation and we will forward some limited offers for short-term and long-term accommodation to you! We cannot guarantee a room to all admitted students, but we will assist you in finding accommodation on your own.
