1 CWSF Fredericton, New Brunswick Biochar Filtration of Phosphorous A process was developed to convert wood into fertilizer, by experimentally filtering and storing residual phosphorus from a contaminated water source. A key component of this process was the production substance from wood known as "biochar," through pyrolysis. It was experimentally determined that implementing a radial flow filter (containing biochar as media) would be a sustainable, cost-effective solution to preventing eutrophication. 4 CWSF Lethbridge, Alberta Samantha Stuart Project Unlike: A Novel Psychometric Screener to Quantify Facebook Overuse Samantha has a love of science, music, and the arts. She is a top academic, and an award-winning Grade 11 student at Collingwood's. This year she has taken on the task of organizing and editing her school's yearbook, is a member of the girl's volleyball team, and performed the title role in her school's production of Hello, Dolly! In the summers of 2011 and 2012 she performed with Singers Onstage, a youth operetta company in Washington DC with principal parts in both shows. She plays the flute, piccolo, and baritone saxophone. Samantha scored 100% on her Advanced Rudiments exam with the Royal Conservatory of Music, First Class Honours on her Grade 5 Voice, and is currently working towards her Grade 8 Flute. At the 2012 Canada-Wide-Science-Fair in PEI, she won a bronze medal for her project on measuring behavioural motivation on social-networking websites. This is her fifth science fair project. She was inspired to study Facebook Overuse at the CWSF last year when a PhD candidate, so dependent on Facebook he couldn't complete his thesis, approached her booth and asked for her help. Samantha plans to pursue Materials Science Engineering at the University of Toronto, or McGill. Information Senior A novel psychometric screener (designed to quantify Facebook Overuse) was drafted, statistically validated, and built as a web application. The screener was based upon two psychometric scales: one of novel creation measuring the intensity of an individual's psychogenic needs on Facebook, the other measuring their level of usage. This screener has applications in clinical psychology, behavioural-addictions, and could expand to assist the diagnoses of social-disorders. 5 CWSF Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Sam Stuart The Twitter VS Facebook 2012 Health The Twitter VS Facebook 2012 is an online, survey-based psychology study. In Part A, the human needs that non-consciously motivate people to use Twitter and Facebook were scientifically determined. Part B of the study?derived from a second dataset and new hypothesis? was dedicated to the development of a viable Social-Networking Hierarchy of Needs, and a Predictive Social-Networking Behavioural Model. The study was conclusive. Samantha has a love of science and music. She is a top academic, and an award winning student in Grade 10 at Collingwood's Pretty River Academy. In 2011, at her regional Science Fair, she won a gold medal and Best of Fair in Physical and Mathematical Sciences. Samantha is also a part-time, Blogger and was invited to Montreal in 2011 as media to report on Canada's second National Reading Summit. Samantha has worked for a Veterinary Service and interned with a Website Design and Interactive Communications Agency. It is the combination of her love of Science, and her understanding of Social Media that inspired her 2012 Science Fair Project. She recently toured China as a part of Grade 11 World Politics Credit.
