2 MAPS Course Descriptions Monday Suzuki Violin - Beginner Group Class Grades: PreK - 2 (PreK students must be at least 4 years old) Instructor: Ms. Denitza Larsen Location: Lower School Music Room Pick-up: 4:30 p.m. in the Lower School Music Room This exciting course is designed to give student the opportunity to begin their musical journey on the violin in a fun and supportive group setting. The Suzuki Strings program is one of the fastest growing music programs at The Meadows School. An adult must be in attendance for all lessons. Students must supply their own violin and the necessary accompanying equipment and will be contacted after enrollment is received. French Language & Culture - Français Grades: 2-5 Instructor: Mr. Stephan Clement Location: Lower School Room 121 This class is not only an introduction but it will provide a deeper knowledge of French language and culture. The necessities of French pronunciation, grammar, and culture are presented through a balanced development of all four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The importance of communication and cultural awareness is stressed through a wide variety of activities (video, music, games, projects, etc.). This course is designed for students with some or no knowledge of French language or culture. Chess-Beginners Instructor: Mr. Tomer Yitzhaki Location: Lower School Room 103 This class is designed for beginner players or those with little play experience. The main learning objective is to introduce the game rules along with basic strategy. In addition to learning how the pieces move and their value on the board, students will develop an opening repertoire according to their preferred style of play. Throughout the semester there will be opportunities to participate in scholastic tournaments and optional homework assignments.
3 Beginning Band Grades: 3-5 Instructor: Ms. Jenny Tolen Location: CFA Band Room Pick-up: 4:30 p.m. at the car pool line outside the CFA This course is for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who would like to learn to play a woodwind (clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, or saxophone), brass (trombone, tuba, baritone, French horn, or trumpet), or mallet percussion (marimba or xylophone) instrument. Students will need to supply their own instruments. Tennis - Skills Clinic (begins January 9) Instructor: Meadows Varsity Tennis Coaching Staff Tuition: $200 Location: Lincy Tennis Complex Pick-up: 4:45 p.m. at the car pool line outside the Tennis Complex This course is for students having varying levels of experience or no formal experience at all. This course will concentrate on giving students a set of basic tennis skills while having fun! Ideas about sportsmanship and effort will be emphasized. Students will be divided into small groups for instruction. Students wear school uniforms with tennis shoes and should bring their own tennis racquets for this class. (NOTE: This course is offered Monday through Thursday. Students may register for one or more days.) Tuesday Chinese Language & Culture - Beginner Instructor: Ms. Maggie Chen Location: Lower School Room 102 Pick-up: 4:45 p.m. at the car pool line outside the Lower School This beginning level course is designed to introduce students to the Chinese language and culture. Students will learn and practice basic Chinese language skills while enjoying a rich cultural experience. Instruction will include writing, listening, speaking, singing, and projects. Art - Primary Grades (K - 2) Grades: K - 2 Instructor: Ms. Rachel Martin Location: CFA Art Room Pick-up: 4:30 p.m. at the car pool line outside the CFA This course is project based. Students will dabble in watercolor, drawing, painting, and crafts while learning about artists and various art techniques. No previous art instruction is necessary. 5
4 LEGO Fun Grades: K - 3 Instructor: Mrs. Carol Shubinski Location: Lower School Science Room 111 This class is for students who enjoy science and technology. They will build different models using LEGO bricks, motors, and sensors. Students will also use computer software to program the models to perform various tasks. This class encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills. Drama - Intermediate Grades (3-5) Grades: 3-5 Instructor: Mr. Tim Burris Location: CFA Black Box Theatre Pick-up: 4:30 p.m. in the CFA Students will explore movement, improvisation, proper vocal production, and stretch their creativity. They will be exposed to literature appropriate for performance. They will tour our theatre facility and learn about the importance of lighting, sound, set construction, make-up, and costuming. Tennis - Skills Clinic (begins January 3) Instructor: Meadows Varsity Tennis Coaching Staff Tuition: $200 Location: Tennis Complex Pick-up: 4:45 p.m. at the car pool line outside the Tennis Complex See Page 5. Wednesday Chess-Intermediate Instructor: Mr. Tomer Yitzhaki Location: Lower School Room 103 This class is designed for intermediate players, and is centered on thinking patterns and endgame techniques. The main learning objectives are evaluations and tactics training. In addition to demonstration analysis and lecture games, students will continue to work on positional play perception, and the ability to reason their moves choices. Throughout the semester there will be opportunities to participate in scholastic tournaments and optional homework assignments.
5 Chinese Language & Culture - Intermediate Grades: 1-5 (past students or those with basic knowledge of Chinese only) Instructor: Ms. Maggie Chen Location: Lower School Room 102 Pick-up: 4:45 p.m. at the car pool line outside the Lower School Not for new beginners, this course is designed to introduce students to the Chinese language and culture. Students will learn and practice basic Chinese language skills while enjoying a rich cultural experience. Instruction will include writing, listening, speaking, singing, and projects. Homework/Math Games Grades: 1-2 Instructor: Mrs. Mary Beth Cleland Location: Lower School Room 104 Students will get help completing their math homework, practice spelling words, and then use cards, dominoes, counters, coins, clocks, and ipads to play games that reinforce the skills they are learning in class. Homework/Study Hall Grades: 3-5 Instructor: Ms. Kathy Brennan, Ms. Kim Cagle Location: Lower School Science/Computer Lab, Room 111 Students will meet in the Science room to complete their homework and read or prepare for tests. Ms. Brennan and Ms. Cagle will facilitate homework completion and test preparation. This is not one-on-one tutoring. Intermediate Guitar Grades: 1-5 Instructor: Mr. Edward Judd Location: CFA Black Box Theatre Pick-up: 4:30 p.m. in the Peccole CFA This course is for students with previous guitar experience. Instruction will include everything from the basics of solo playing to performing as an ensemble. In addition to note-reading and techniques, students will learn about self-discipline, practicing habits, team work, and the joy of making music together. Popular and traditional music styles will be covered. There will be one performance per semester. Students will need to purchase or rent an appropriate size guitar and bring it to class every Wednesday. The main object of this course is to further develop guitar skills, above all, and have fun playing the instrument! 7
6 Art - Primary Grades (K - 2) Grades: K - 2 Instructor: Ms. Rachel Martin Location: CFA Art Room Pick-up: 4:30 p.m. at the car pool line outside the CFA This course is project based. Students will dabble in watercolor, drawing, painting, and crafts while learning about artists and various art techniques. No previous art instruction is necessary. Beginning Musical Theatre Grades: 3-5 Instructor: Mrs. Jessica Gaylor Location: Lower School Common Learn how to sing and dance in this beginner musical theatre class. This performance-oriented class will teach students how to use voice and body while acting out their favorite musical numbers in a comfortable and fun environment. Movement and voice director, self-expression, and building a knowledge of musical theatre will be just a few of the skills that students will practice weekly. The class will perform a short presentation at the end of the final session. Comfortable clothing and shoes are required. Tennis - Skills Clinic (begins January 4) Instructor: Meadows Varsity Tennis Coaching Staff Tuition: $200 Location: Tennis Complex Pick-up: 4:45 p.m. at the car pool line outside the Tennis Complex See Page 5. Thursday Art - Intermediate Grades (3-5) Grades: 3-5 Instructor: Ms. Charisse Welsing Location: CFA Art Room Pick-up: 4:30 p.m. at the car pool line outside the CFA Students will learn how to draw from nature and their imaginations, paint in acrylic and watercolor, create a collage, use pastel chalk, and use oil pastels. Students will also learn about weaving and sewing, hand-building using clay, fashion designing, wood sculpturing, maskmaking, found material projects, and will be able to experiment with different and unusual building materials like duct tape, balloons, or candy. The class focus is on having fun and moving at each student s pace, but it also designed to build a repertoire of art skills for those students who wish to continue with Studio Art in the Middle School program.
7 Suzuki Violin - Books 1, 2, 3 (instructor approval required) Instructor: Ms. Denitza Larsen Location: Lower School Music Room This class is for students who are able to play Suzuki Violin Book 1 repertoire. The course will cover materials in Suzuki Book 1, 2, & 3. Drama - Primary Grades (K - 2) Grades: K - 2 Instructor: Mr. Tim Burris Location: CFA Black Box Theatre Pick-up: 4:30 p.m. in the CFA Students will explore movement, improvisation, proper vocal production, and stretch their creativity. They will be exposed to literature appropriate for performance. JYD Project Basketball Grades: 1-5 Instructor: JYD Project Coaching Staff (with appearances by former NBA player Jerome Junk Yard Dog Williams) Location: Lower School Smith Playground This course is for students who have varying levels of experience or no formal experience at all. This course will teach basketball fundamentals and is a great way to keep your child in shape! Discipline, hard work, and fun with friends are the key pillars to any successful basketball program that JYD Project holds. Students will learn the importance of stretching and learn basic basketball skills such as dribbling, shooting, and proper defensive form. Students should wear gym clothes with comfortable basketball/tennis shoes. Tennis - Skills Clinic (begins January 5) Instructor: Meadows Varsity Tennis Coaching Staff Tuition: $200 Location: Tennis Complex Pick-up: 4:45 p.m. at the car pool line outside the Tennis Complex See Page 5. 9
8 Friday Friday Fun & Games Instructor: Mrs. Mary Beth Cleland Location: Lower School Smith Playground It s FUN and GAMES time! Come play Ocean Rescue, Burst the Bubble, Musical Forest, Walk Your Dog, Noodle Knockdown, and many more exciting and fun-filled games. Sportsmanship and teamwork, along with game-based skills will be emphasized in this course. Please bring a pair of sneakers to change into from your dress shoes. Beginning Guitar Grades: 1-5 Instructor: Mr. Edward Judd Location: CFA Black Box Theatre Pick-up: 4:30 p.m. in the CFA This course is designed for students with little to no guitar experience. Instruction will include everything from the basics of playing to performance in an ensemble.
