REMINDER Scores for students who take the Florida Standards Alternate Assessment count toward proficiency and growth!
Assessment Participation Guidelines Questions to Guide the Decision-Making Process to Determine How a Student With Disabilities Will be Instructed and Participate in the Statewide Standardized Assessment Program 1. Does the student have a significant cognitive disability? YES 2. Even with appropriate and allowable instructional accommodations, assistive technology or accessible instructional materials, does the student require modifications, as defined in Rule 6A (1)(z), F.A.C., to the grade-level general state content standards pursuant to Rule 6A , F.A.C.? 3. Does the student require direct instruction in academic areas of English language arts, mathematics, social studies and science based on access points in order to acquire, generalize and transfer skills across settings? YES YES
Weekly Briefing #12885 What is a Significant Cognitive Disability?? In the individual educational plan (IEP) team s discussion to the question: Does the student have significant cognitive disabilities, all of the information should be considered collectively for which the student s IQ score is but one piece of the data puzzle. The focal point for discussion should be on the impact of the student s cognitive disability. The impact should be permanent, prominent, and pervasive; affecting all aspects of the student s academic, domestic, community living, leisure and vocational activities.

March 26, 2010 The Use of 7700, 7800, and 7900 Course Codes The Course Directory clearly defines the students for whom the 7700, 7800, and 7900 courses may be used. To meet the FLDOE compliance requirements, only students with disabilities who meet exemption criteria from the Florida Standards Assessment/End-of-Year Course Exams (FSA/EOCs) and are assessed using the Florida Standards Alternate Assessment may be enrolled in the 7700, 7800, and 7900 Access core courses.
Cont d Course Revisions Students with disabilities who do not meet exemption criteria from the FSA/EOCs or other state assessments may NOT be enrolled in the 7700, 7800, and 7900 core courses. Core courses include all math, reading, language arts, English, science, and social studies courses.
What Should Teachers Use to Teach?
Diploma Options Legislation passed in Florida during the 2014 session repealed the special diploma law, s , F.S., effective July 1, Students with disabilities who enter the 9th grade in or thereafter, may not earn a special diploma but will have the opportunity to earn a standard diploma in accordance with the provisions of s , F.S
Diploma Options Students with disabilities who entered 9th grade prior to the school year, whose IEP was in effect on June 20, 2014, indicated that the student was pursuing a special diploma, may continue to pursue a special diploma authorized in accordance with s , F.S
Diploma Options The IEP team, which includes the parent and the student, can determine, in alignment with postsecondary goals that the best option for the student is to change to a standard diploma via access course path. However, because these students did not begin to pursue a standard diploma in 9th grade, they may need additional time to complete all of the required coursework. Once the student makes such a change, a special diploma is no longer an option.
