New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. DSM-IV materials will be available for printing on Blackboard. Course Description: PSY 313 CLINICAL AND ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY (3) Three hours lecture per week Examines the major diagnostic, etiologic, and treatment options for a variety of psychopathologies and psychological disorders. Areas to be covered include how psychologists diagnose, assess, understand the etiology, and treat psychological illness and problems. Topics include: disorders related to anxiety, stress & trauma, mood, schizophrenia and psychosis, eating and substance abuse, memory & organic dysfunctions, personality; social, cultural, and legal issues related to psychopathology. Learning Objectives: Students completing this course will be able to do the following: 1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of perspectives on the origin and treatment of abnormal behavior.
2 2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the application of psychological principles and techniques in clinical settings. 3. Evaluate the appropriateness of conclusions presented in disseminated research relevant to clinical psychology. 4. Use clinical psychological theory to understand interpersonal and group behavior Evaluate the merit of information gathered by clinical psychologists and psychotherapists, including the ability to differentiate the probable from the improbable. Course Requirements and Grade Policy: 20% Attendance & Class Assignments 20% Exam 1 (October 1 st ) 20% Exam 2 (November 5 th ) 20% Case Paper (Due: November 26 th ) 20% Exam 3 (December 10 th )
3 Syllabus CSUCI Psychology 313 Page 2 Course Requirements and Grade Policy (continued): You are expected to read the chapters and readings assigned before the lecture on that topic. You must be prepared to complete assignments based on the assigned topic at the beginning of class. An attendance sheet will be distributed at the beginning of each class. The three exams will be ¾ multiple choice and ¼ essay. Please bring a Scantron form, #2 pencil, and a small Green Book to class on test days. The tests will cover information from all assigned readings, lecture material, videos, and guest speaker lectures. Paper topics and information will be handed out in class or posted on Black Board. Papers must be typed and use APA format and style. Late assignments lose 5% per day. Grades will be assigned as listed below. For more information, refer to CSUCI s grade policy % - A 80-89% - B 70-79% - C 60-69% - D 59% & below - F Academic Honesty: Any incidents of cheating, inventing false information or citations, plagiarism, and/or helping another student commit such dishonest acts will be handled according to CSUCI policy.
