1 Issue No th February 2017 Latest news Coach Go Coach will be starting a homework club bus after Easter. (See attached leaflet). All normal tickets will be accepted and they will also be doing a flat fare of 2.00 to any destination on a go-coach bus even if the students need to transfer to another bus. If this service proves successful they will roll this out on further routes in September. Maths Clinic We now have Maths Clinic up and running. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lunchtime staff are available in S06 to assist students with their work should they need us. Termly Maths Puzzle The second of our Termly Maths Puzzles can be found towards the end of this newsletter. It is more mathematical in nature this term and I would recommend (as a hint) starting with a smaller number of doors and students. As before the termly puzzle is designed to encourage you and your child to work together on a problem. As such we would ask that you work with your child rather than simply complete the puzzle for them or get them to complete it alone. Any correct entry submitted to Mrs Penfold by the closing date will receive a House point. There will then be a prize draw for first, second and third place which will be awarded a higher number of House points. Gifted and Talented Success at The UKMT Team Challenge Trinity entered this nationally recognised maths team challenge for four of our top students in Year s 8 & 9. Megan Barnard, Jack Nolan, Year 8 and Joshua Davis, Max Tindal from Year 9 were selected to represent Trinity in this Gifted & Talented competition held at St. Olave s School, Orpington. There were over 30 schools from London and the South East who entered teams. There were a series of team challenges including a group challenge, cross number, a shuttle race and a relay race, which proved to be the most fun. All four students contributed extremely well and at the end of the day were delighted to find out that they had come 7 th out of all the schools, a huge achievement in this prestigious competition. They enjoyed applying mathematical knowledge to real world puzzles and scenarios. They rose to the challenge of competing against the top students of all the schools who had entered. Huge congratulations to all 4 students who should be commended for their analytical skills and logical reasoning. Mr S Fisher, who entered the team, is extremely proud of them and Mr J Taylor who accompanied them on the day was hugely impressed. Oxbridge Information Evening On Monday evening, 20 th February, a number of Gifted and Talented students from Year 10 attended an information evening about Oxford and Cambridge Universities at Sevenoaks School. The speakers were Dr. Caroline Burt, Admissions Tutor, Pembroke College, Cambridge, and Dr. Mark Wormald, Senior Tutor and Tutor in Biochemistry & Chemistry, Corpus Christi, Oxford. Both speakers

2 Education for life in all its fullness offered valuable information to help students applying for either of these prestigious universities. We were taken through the application process including the personal statements, the interview process, and the selection criteria. The speakers emphasised the need for students to choose a subject they really love, before deciding on the college. Both Oxford and Cambridge undoubtedly look for a consistently excellent academic track record, including top GCSE grades. The average candidate's A Levels have to be two and a half A*s. course was really interesting and fun and we feel that we learnt a lot from the experience. Thank you Mr Sweeting! The speakers told us the interview is the last piece of the jigsaw, where the final decision of an offer is made. During the interview process, a series of questions to test subject knowledge and research and analytical skills will be asked. The evening was very informative and certainly gave us all a great deal to think about. Hannah Bolton Year 10 Public Speaking Before half term a few Year 9 students were selected to take part in a course designed to improve our abilities in public speaking. The course consisted of interactive activities with the speaker and gave us good advice about how to engage the audience and keep them interested in a presentation. What we learnt about good public speaking was put into practice when we created our own presentations about our interests. We then presented our power points using the skills we had learnt and gave feedback to our peers. Overall the FAME A HUGE well done to all the cast and crew involved with FAME, the level of talent was at an all-time high and all of the performances were thoroughly entertaining and engaging. All involved have worked incredibly hard since September and have shown a vast amount of passion and commitment to the Performing Arts department. This week is Mrs Whitbourn: would continue to feel that they can come and speak to me about anything and everything, and that I can continue to be a listening ear for them. icare Revolution On Thursday morning all students will have the chance to see a second presentation from icare Revolution which is a Christian group who are part of Hillsong. They are doing their current presentation on Friendship and Relationships in lots of schools during this fortnight as part of their schools work projects. We are looking forward to the presentation as the students very much enjoyed their anti-bullying presentation earlier this academic year. Monthly Prayer Meeting Just a quick reminder to all who come to our monthly prayer meeting that this month our meeting will be on Thursday 9 th March, rather than the first Thursday of the month, as Hillsong are visiting the students during that time pp includes fish/sausage and chip supper and soft drink Bar open all evening, raffle and prizes! megan.sweeting@emea.nec.com. We meet next on Monday 6 th March and then on Tuesday the 21 st and Tuesday the 28 th March pm in the hall.

Rugby season The leagues have now kicked off, all squad lists are in the PE area, and captains need to ensure that they have a full squad. Year 10 Physical Education Core All students who are going to the gym or swimming need to wear their Trinity PE top and any bottoms, this is for safety in the gym and for the fitness manager to know who they are. Please can all students who are attending the gym come and see Miss Trew break time Monday and collect a par Q form which needs to be signed prior to them going. If this is not completed they will NOT be able to go. All Students Who Go Offsite Monday break there is a meeting for all students who go offsite at 10.25am in the sports hall. Please ensure your son/daughter attends. Tennis Nets The PE department are trying to source some freestanding tennis nets. At Trinity we are very fortunate to have two courts specifically for tennis in the spring and summer terms. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. Mark 12:29-31 In this reading Jesus is questioned about the greatest commandments of all, and he answers clearly. It is interesting that both commandments he mentions are about love, and that hate has no part in what he is saying. That is a wonderful thought and a great guide to us as we go about our daily lives. Giving thanks for: A restful half term break and a good start to the new term. 5 LOCKER ROOM There are 1,000 lockers and 1,000 students. The first student opens every locker door. The second student closes all the doors with even numbers. The third student changes all of the doors that are multiples of three (opens those that are closed and shuts those that are open). The fourth student changes all of the doors that are multiples of four and so on until every student has changed the doors. After 1,000 students, which locker doors will be open?
