Volume 46, Number 9, 23 June 2017 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College Dear Family and Friends, As you read this newsletter you will once more see what an outstanding education is offered here at the College to our OLSH girls. As a Catholic school community we are deeply disappointed with the outcome of the Federal Government s education funding legislation. This legislation was hastily developed and has now been adopted without sufficient scrutiny. Any decision made in haste, lacks wisdom and importantly will always come from a position of ignorance. Be assured that affordability and accessibility of education in Catholic schools will be at the forefront of the Catholic education authorities response to the legislation passed last night. OLSH College Bentleigh will continue to be committed to the provision of Catholic education to our young women. Importantly, these next weeks and months will be a time for us to continue to place our cause at the attention of Members of Parliament. Moving forward Catholic Education Melbourne will advise us of how we can best present our case. Thank you to all parents who supported the advocacy processes made to the Federal Parliament. In all of this may we take into our hearts the words of St Paul: Stand your ground with truth a belt around your waist and uprightness a breastplate, wearing the shoes on your feet the eagerness to spread the gospel of peace. Ephesians 6:14-15 Education in the OLSH tradition Education in we the are OLSH heart people tradition who we are are faith heart filled, people reverence who are faith relationships, filled, reverence pursue excellence relationships, and pursue touch the hearts excellence of others. and touch the hearts of others. Always united in our shared OLSH Spirit. Anne O Loughlin Principal Congratulations to the SCSA Cross Country (Div 2) team 2 nd overall! 2 2 Faith and Mission Food Van Our new muffin baking outreach for the St. Kilda food van began on Tuesday afternoon. These muffins were delivered to the van by the senior students and staff on Wednesday night and were much appreciated by those who received them. Thank you from St Vincent de Paul. Thank you once again for the blankets collected and passed on to us at the beautiful Mass we attended on Sacred Heart Day. All of our members who were privileged to be able to witness the energy, enthusiasm and excitement of the girls participating in the Mass came away from your College with a feeling of joy and hope in a world that is presenting us daily with horrendous events. Two of our members immediately went on four visits, two of them to new people in need and were able to hand out blankets. They then called on the family I spoke about knowing that they were going to need warmer bedding than what we supplied them in December. They were so grateful. Each visiting pair of members have blankets in their car when called out so they are able to supply them where needed. We are passing on some blankets to nearby conferences who also visit in the immediate area. Our aim is to help as many people as possible now before the winter months really set in. Please pass on our sincere thanks to the staff, students and parents for their ongoing support. Yvonne Octigan Highett Conference Students with donated blankets for St Vincent s on Sacred Heart Day

3 Faith and Mission Issoudun Retreat Day On a day like today we make special time and space to slow down and to listen more deeply to what s happening in our lives. We try to listen more deeply to our hearts. We have reflected on the relationships we have with God and others and have taken time to look at what s most important in our own lives. Sr Megan Donohue fdnsc Deputy Principal Faith and Mission

6 Curriculum News Celebrating Academic Excellence On Wednesday 26 July we will be celebrating the academic achievement of a number of our OLSH girls at an Academic Excellence Ceremony. An invitation will be sent via Care Monkey to the parents of any student who will be receiving an award at this ceremony. What is the award criteria? Consistent Application to Studies awards recognises students who have demonstrated a consistent, organised and enthusiastic approach to their studies across a majority of their subjects. Academic Achievement recipients have demonstrated an excellent level of application and endeavour across a significant number of their subjects in Years 7 to 11. VCE Subject Award recipients have demonstrated an excellent level of application and endeavour, and have achieved the highest result in one or more of their Unit 3 subjects. Outstanding Academic Achievement recipients have demonstrated academic excellence, while performing at the highest levels. They have approached their studies with rigour and enthusiasm, achieving exemplary results. The following is a brief explanation of the process used to determine the award recipients for the Consistent Application to Studies, Academic Achievement and Academic Excellence Awards: An analysis of the student report data for Semester One is completed and a maximum of two students in each year level (according to their academic results) receive an Academic Excellence Award. The next top 6 7 students (approximately) from each year level receive an Academic Achievement Award. The Consistent Application to Studies award recipients are determined via an analysis of the Work Habits data, which are an indication of how well a student has applied herself to her work. The students who achieve the academic awards typically achieve grades above 70 75%. It would be rare for a student below the 70 75% range to receive an academic award. Students receiving Consistent Application to Studies achieve Always in almost every work habit - this group of students includes the hard workers who do not necessarily get the best grades. Ms Lynn Egan Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching Academic Excellence Ceremony Wednesday 26 July College Hall 9.00am All welcome RSVP College Reception or office@olsh.vic.edu.au

7 Wellbeing News Now that we have come to the end of Semester 1, it is timely that we reflect on our achievements and look forward to planning our goals for next term. Semester 1 of this year has been a welcomed challenge. Having to learn to navigate our way through Year 12 has brought out the best of our abilities in our educational life. We have needed great organisational skills, will-power, self-motivation and resilience. It has also brought to light the immense sense of "team" and "togetherness" not only in our year level, but in our Houses and the entire student body evident in the abundance of talent and achievements in the House athletics, PAS, inter school sport, debating, production and many other areas. We hope to see momentum continue as we aim to "get better at getting better" in all aspects. Well done girls, you should all be proud! Piwainashe Kahonde, Year 12, College Captain My first semester at OLSH has been amazing. I love the warm and inviting environment as well as the hospitality. Year 7 Camp was a great experience and making new friends that I feel like I have known forever. Ashley Vinci Year thus far has been extremely exciting for the entire school with the Athletics Carnival happening in March and the Performing Arts Spectacular (PAS) taking place just a month ago. House spirit has been amazing throughout all of the houses and the girls are showing great enthusiasm in all activities. House Captains, Year 12, Amanda Jambu, Bethany Supple, Tahlia Legge, Katelyn Fitchett Semester 1 was unbelievable. Since starting high school, I have been on camp, had an amazing Ancient Civilisations Day, a fun filled Sacred Heart Day and the best classes ever. The people at OLSH are amazing, from the students to the teachers, and everybody has been supporting me and my newly-made friends. Mali Romanis, Year 7 OLSH College has been an incredible experience for me. I have met some amazing people, both students and staff. One of the highlights was all the friends and relationships I made at camp. Overall Semester 1 have been amazing and I can t wait for more to come. Erin Tregeagle, Year 7 This semester at OLSH has been a really enjoyable time. I have been encouraged to try new things and participated in things that I would not usually do, such as the Dance Show, PAS and Drama performances. Danae Hatzigeorgiou, Year 7 Student Food Delivery Please be aware that using an online meal ordering and delivery platform, such as UberEATS, is not permitted by students during school hours. Uniform During the term break please use this opportunity to check skirt lengths and adjust accordingly. The requirements are in the College planner. Wishing students and their families a restful break, taking time to re-energise for the term ahead. Mrs Cheryl Bullen Assistant to the Principal Years 7 9 and Mrs Antonella La Greca Assistant to the Principal Years 10-12

8 Canberra Visit In the first week of the 2017 Hartzer Residential Program, Group 1 visited the nation s capital, Canberra. We were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia s history, culture, heritage and democracy. On our first day in Canberra, we had the opportunity to visit Mt Ainslie, the War Memorial, Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy and Regatta Point. All of these locations are influential and important places. Highlights were hearing stories of Australian service men and women at the War Memorial, reenacting the debate of the 1964 Bill, which led to the conscription of young Australian men to fight in the Vietnam War and the story behind Canberra itself. The second day was filled with excitement and curiosity as we toured around the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), visited the Royal Australian Mint and appreciated the beautiful artwork in the National Art Gallery. The Australian Government, under the Parliament and Civics education rebate program, contributed funding to assist in meeting the costs of the Canberra excursion. The government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. Our Canberra experience has inspired the individual Inquiry Learning Projects which are well underway. Students are able to choose an area of personal interest to research and then present their findings. We had an incredible time visiting Canberra and wish to return there sometime in the future. 9 9 Big Science Competition What is the ASI Big Science Competition? It is a great way to challenge students thinking, from Years 7 to 10 in Science. The competition consists of a 50 minute, 30 multiple choice format which tests critical thinking and problem solving skills, not just factual recall. Questions are set in real-life, contemporary contexts, making them relatable (and interesting). Questions in the Big Science Competition are aligned with the Australian Curriculum Science including Science Inquiry Skills, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Understanding: Core concepts. The results for this year s competition were excellent. 86 students from Years 7 to 10 participated. Of those students 31 received awards, which equates to one third of the students receiving an award. Special commendation to Piper Zielinski who received a High Distinction. Congratulations to the following students: Year 7 Year 8 Distinction Distinction Isabella Di Conza Kyla Del Castillo Lily Sleeman Brooke Muller Credit Amelie Afxentis Kiara Ancora Ayesha Azad Lauren Rossi Naomi Saldanha Brooke Wilson Credit Kyla Del Castillo Louisa Goh Emily Rupik Danielle Russell Hetal Singh Maxine Viado Elizabeth Zhevelyuk Issoudun Year 10 High Distinction Distinction Piper Zielinski Alison Duncan Distinction Grace Bowles Laura Campbell Isabelle Foscolos Credit Katya Adkin Navya Balraj Katia Daye Michelle Sigalov Mia Tulloch Credit Hayley Gorman Allyson Jambu Olivia Lamb Congratulations Piper Zielinski, Issoudun on her High Distinction in the Big Science Competition We are very proud of our students achievements. We also recognise the diligence and commitment you have to your studies. Congratulations. Ms Dianne Byers Head of Department Science

10 Je Suis The first two weeks of Je Suis have flown by in a whirl of activities focused on I am my future. Issoudun students have embraced a week of Employment Pathways Certificate work with Careers Advisor Mrs Maureen Malone, and hands-on workshops including: styling for the future, presenting for job interviews, creating natural beauty products, recruitment tips, resume development, action plan for career development, and tertiary institution visits, culminating in very confident mock interviews. Thanks to visiting presenters Nicole Vine (Personal Stylist), Maree Lacy (Accountancy Connect), Nedda Daou (Arbonne), and OLSH students (Katya Katselis, Lauren Caltabiano, Elise Petrou, Stephanie Elwood, Casey Hart, Mikaela Howard, Amy Klimek, Madeleine Horne, and Alex Christodoulou) for their invaluable support with this part of the program. Andrea Cincotta presented to the group at the FIT (Financially Independent Teenagers) seminar to develop an awareness of pay equality for women, superannuation, tax and financial terminology. She workshopped with the girls to help them think about devising a personal saving strategy. Many students left the session with a desire to start making real plans for a sound financial future, beginning with looking for a part-time job! The issue of Sustainability arose this week, linking I am my future with I am my present. Working collaboratively, the girls researched and developed informative, creative presentations about a range of topics including: food waste, bees, water pollution, plastics, biodiversity, food travel, worm farms, deforestation, and fashion waste. Excellent slogans and a wide range of practical strategies were shared and discussed. The group then visited the Sea Shepherd environmental organisation on their excursion to Williamstown, and extended their knowledge and understanding of biodiversity and healthy oceans. Plans for a more sustainable world are on the way! Visiting the Sea Shepherd

11 Je Suis Computational thinking games were thoroughly enjoyed by the class after viewing the thought-provoking, historical coding movie, The Imitation Game. Students accepted the challenge to try a variety of problem solving and maths based activities. The growth mindset is alive and well amongst these students. Along the way students participated energetically in the Je Suis health and fitness program, wearing their student-designed and screen printed T shirts.(well done Isabelle Foscolos!) From meditation and mindfulness painting to power walks, boxing, skipping and vigorous circuit training sessions (thanks to PT, Karen Gorman, and the Year 10 Advanced PE class!), the girls have shown willingness to improve their health and fitness in preparation for Geocaching in the city, the Bayside Beach trail next week, and the challenging Hartzer hikes. Design by Isabelle Foscolos We are so impressed with the level of participation, collaboration, cooperation, and development of initiative and leadership amongst the group, and look forward to delving into the past at the Immigration museum, NGV, Italian Walk, Melbourne Museum and Sovereign Hill in the coming weeks. The Je Suis Team (Mrs Michelle Moore, Ms Maria Verna, Ms Chris West, Mrs Annemarie Petering)
