The publications data was sourced from Scopus International database. The findings reveal that Haryana registered.2% growth per year and citation impact of 6. citations per paper. Haryana's research output in physical science accounted for.2% state share and.2% country share in S&T during Nearly 3.% of Haryana's output appeared as International collaborative papers. Chemistry and physics & astronomy accounted for the largest share (.3% and % respectively). The top 2 most productive organizations of Haryana accounted for 3.2% and 6.2% publication and citation share, registered average productivity of 2. papers per organization, averaged 6.2 citations per paper, h-index of 3., and averaged.% share as international collaborative papers of during The top 2 most productive authors from Haryana-based organizations accounted for 22.3% publications share, 3.% citations share, registered average productivity of 6. papers per author, averaged. citations per paper, h-index of.%, and.6% share as international collaborative papers during Nearly % of Haryana's papers in physical science were reported in top 2 journals during Haryana contributed highly cited papers with + citations per paper. Together these papers cumulated 32 citations, with an average of 3.3 citations per paper during In all, 3 authors ( foreign) and 66 organizations (3 foreign) had participated in contributing these highly cited papers. KeyTerms: Physical science; Natural Science; Scientometric; Research; Collaboration INTRODUCTION Physical science is a branch of natural science that studies non-living systems with the aim to increase our understanding of how natural phenomena of the earth, atmosphere and space works, and to explain and predict nature's phenomena, based on empirical evidence. Physical science builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. Physical science encompasses a variety of fields that include astronomy, chemistry, geology, physics, atmospheric science, mathematics and oceanography, each branch referred to as a "physical science", but together called the "physical sciences". Physical science research involves designing and conducting experiments to collect physical evidence of natural phenomena and to analyze this information with the purpose to develop practical applications in the creation of new materials and devices. Theoretical researchers use thought experiments to increase knowledge of their subject. Research funding by S&T agencies in India such as Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Space, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Defense Research & Development Organization, Department of Science & Technology etc. is indispensable to the vitality of our nation's research programs. Such investments in academic universities and research laboratories are essential for maintaining economic growth and generating jobs, educating and training the workforce of the future, and contributing to the growth of various other disciplines of science and technology. Such investments are also essential to attract outstanding students and to S produce a world-class workforce and enabling the R&D enterprise it underpins. Physical Science is a very old branch and over the years many streams and disciplines have evolved and many new disciplines have come up with greater benefits2. With this background, the study aims to undertake an assessment of the research work carried out in physical science by agencies and research organizations within Haryana. LITERATURE REVIEW No uantitative study has been undertaken till date that seeks to analyze and assess total publications output in physical science in Haryana. However some studies have indeed been undertaken that had sought to examine the status of physics research3, chemistry research, environment science research and mathematical research6 in India. But none of these studies had examined geographical distribution of physical science research output in India by its states. As a result, we decided to undertake a study aimed at assessing physical science research output of Haryana state. OBJECTIVES The main objective of this study is to analyze publications and citations data of Haryana for determining its performance status in physical science research. The study uses a series of uantitative and ualitative measures to: To measure and analyze annual growth, citation visibility and impact of research

2 To study the distribution of physical science research output by subfields To study the national and international collaborative share of papers in physical science research To study the contribution and citation impact of top most productive organizations and authors To identify top journals in physical science and study the characteristics of highly cited papers. METHODOLOGY The study retrieved and downloaded the publication data of Haryana's research output in physical sciences from the Scopus database ( covering years period 2 to 2. In the first step, the total output of Haryana was searched by using a number of significant keywords (names of all major cities of Haryana together) in affiliation city tag and restricting search output by these words to the period 2- in date range tag. This search statement so formed was termed as the main search string. This string was further restricted to five subareas tags such as phys, chem, envi, eart and math, as shown below in order to obtain the publication data on physical science by Haryana. Further this main search string was restricted to subject area tag, country tag, source title tag, journal title name and affiliation tag, to get publications output data distributed by subject, collaborating countries, organization and author-wise and journal-wise, etc. For citation data collection, open citation window has been used wherein citation data is collected from the date of publication till December 2. For citation impact study, we have used SJR indicator for 2. The classification of papers in Scopus database is based on the classification of journals and as a result, we could identify the duplication of papers under various subject subfields. CONCLUSION Haryana is still not a highly productive research state in physical science in terms of articles and citations per paper. Haryana's contribution in physical science being still very small, accounting for just.2% country share in S&T output, and 6. citations per paper in years, the state needs to do a lot to improve its performance status both in terms in uality and uantity of physical science research. Academic research is increasingly collaborative across all scientific fields and the nature of scientific research means that much of the work involves spending a significant amount of time on joint projects. Haryana must therefore make concerted efforts to scale up its participation in collaborative research preferably with key collaborating hubs in physical science research at national and international level. Haryana also needs to attract top uality research faculty and research scholars in physical science as well as attract extramural funding on large scale for undertaking major research projects in this discipline. In addition, the state should encourage Haryana based authors to publish much of their research output in select high impact journals. Such measures should help the state improve its citation performance in physical science research as well as improve its potential to contribute highly cited papers in significant numbers. paper each).
