10 Robert Schoonmaker Robert Schoonmaker is a former Valley Central Elementary School Teacher, Principal and Director of Elementary Education for the Valley Central School District. Robert was instrumental in instituting several athletic programs that gave students opportunities to learn and improve their athletic skills before entering the middle and high school programs. As a member of the Walden Rotary Robert was able to obtain funding for both a 5 th and 6 th grade soccer league for boys and girls. Robert also started a wrestling program for 4 th, 5 th and 6 th grade boys that he supervised for over 20 years. He also founded the Walden Rotary Tournament that became one of the premier wrestling tournaments in the northeast. This tournament would draw wrestlers from five different states and host as many as 550 competitors. Along with the efforts of his wife Helen, Robert s reward for his efforts was the opportunity to watch his young wrestlers compete at the varsity level and win County, Sectional and State Championships. Robert and his wife Helen still attend VC sporting events and love when his former athletes and coaches welcome him with a hug.
