MBS shows top results in the trendence alumni barometer Quality, internationality and the pragmatic approach to studies are the trumps of the Munich Business School in a Germany-wide comparison of economics study courses The anniversary year of 2006 for the Munich Business School wound down with excellent results in the trendence alumni barometer. The Berlin Research Institute, which every year surveys more than 200,000 high school and college students as well as graduates and young professionals all over Europe on their studies and career paths, released a special survey on economic-scientific courses of study in Germany. More than 7,600 students from 59 institutions including universities, private colleges and technical colleges were polled. The analyses of 10 individual categories were included in the results. The Munich Business School s performance in its 15 th year of its existence was outstanding: the school was among Germany s top group, which is led by the HHL Leipzig and the WHU Koblenz. MBS took first place across Germany in the category Internationality of Education. The Munich Business School also topped the list in a comparison of nine participating colleges in the Free State of Bavaria. No other college appeared among the top 3 in Germany in the top ten individual categories as often as MBS. The overview below documents the results of the Munich Business School in the individual polling categories. Participants of the survey were given market from 1 (best) to 10 (worst). 2 Greeting New offerings at the Munich Business School Executive Education Committed to success. A look back at the past year offers a great deal of confirmation for the Munich Business School: good ranking results, the successful introduction of the regionally-oriented Asian- Pacific Business Studies and Arabic and Middle Eastern Business Studies course offerings. The number of students has risen and we have broken new ground in the co-operation with KPMG. Co-operations will also play a formative role for A collaboration with the IHK Business School in Moscow, which we are supporting with the establishment of an MBA programme, has already been agreed upon. We also now hope to enhance the strengths such as quality, internationality and practicality, which define the profile of studies at the Munich Business School with the development of further academic education offerings. In the scope of an executive education programme, we will tailor our courses to the needs of individual companies all the way to the possible completion of an MBA degree. We will gladly take it upon ourselves to continue the successes of past years. Sincerely, Prof. Dr. Stefan Baldi Dean, Munich Business School The Executive Education Program is first and foremost oriented towards companies. The Munich Business School offers tailored, in-service, certified individual courses for the further academic education of employees. These courses can be combined modularly through to the completion of an MBA programme. There will be certificate courses for companies and individuals whose further education needs do not require a full MBA education. These will focus on the absorption of knowledge in certain special fields. This offering enables companies to access the quality of education at the Munich Business School with a companyspecific emphasis. As such, the offering is not only heavily focussed on the needs of the respective partner in terms of content, Business Summer Business Summer 2007 consists of two English-language course offerings which are predominantly geared towards foreign MBA and Master s degree students in economic courses of study. At the European Business Summer (4 June 22 June 2007), participants deal with business topics in a European framework. The German Business Summer (2 July 20 July 2007) focuses on Germany. Credit can be received in both courses to be applied at the student s own college. Several excursions (to Budapest among other cities for the Europe Business Summer and to Dresden among other cities for the German Business Summer) and a basic German course are components of the offering. The application deadline is 15 April Information about the programme and registration can be found at but is also closely oriented towards operating requirements from an organisational point of view. On the one hand, this pertains to the design of the timing: the courses can take place whenever is most convenient. In addition, the location can be determined individually. The instructors of the Munich Business School can arrange their courses on the company s premises or at MBS according to their needs. This enhancement of the course programme at the Munich Business School means a further connection to the world of commerce for the college. Moreover, the individual courses also make the offering accessible to those specialised staff and executives who do not possess the formal pre-requisites for a college degree programme. 3 Charity events at MBS adidas know-how for MBS students With their social projects, Munich Business School students are not only supporting the needy in Munich this year, but in Russia and Vietnam as well. It is a commitment that has become a good tradition: as is the case every year, every second-semester MBS student will participate in the planning and implementation of a social project in the spring. Students already have ideas for their projects and many have already begun prepa- Organisation of several joint adventures with children from the Munich Institute for the Blind (Christmas party, arts and crafts, Carnival celebration, walks, Tollwood visit, a day of games, story telling, day-cruise on the Starnberger Lake) Jan Runau, Corporate Communi- rations. MBS co-operates with the International Business School in Moscow The Munich Business School has signed a co-operation agreement with the International Business School in Moscow. The first joint project is the deployment of MBA students in Moscow to MBS. The International Business School is an educational institution of the Moscow Chamber of Organisation of several joint adventures with the residents of a home for the elderly (Alfons-Hoffmann-Haus) Industry and Commerce. The director of IBS, Vladimir Kiselev, explained the excellent reputation of MBS, the practical approach of the education and Fundraising campaign to finance the renovation of an apartment in the Ronald McDonald Kinderhaus at the Großhadern Clinic the college s close contacts with the economy in his decision to sign a contract with the Munich Business School. 3
A look back The highpoint of the corporate life at MBS was without a doubt the congratulatory visits of businessmen and managers who paid their respects to the Munich Business School to mark the 15 th year of its existence. After Booz Allen head Klaus-Peter Gushurst, the CEO of O2 Germany Rudolf Gröger came in October to offer his congratulations with a speech that was just as interesting as it was informative. The turnaround of the mobile telephone company once traded under the name VIAG Interkom, the emergence of the O2 brand, the CEO s personal career path, the market trend in telecommunications and media and the career prospects for college graduates were all topics that Rudolf Gröger touched upon in his presentation and the subsequent discussion with students and instructors. The president of the Bavarian vbw (Vereinigung der Bayerischen Wirtschaft When Europe meets America A public event by MBS students on business cultures in Europe and the US met with great success Business worlds collided on 1 December of the past year in the automotive segment of the Deutsche Museum at least virtually. Economic representatives and scientists debated in a panel discussion organised by fifth-semester Munich Business School students on their experiences in the US and exchanged tips for successful intercultural communication. After an introduction given in humorous American style by the students, panel members Claus Bitomsky (Daimler- Chrysler), Prof. Dr. Hochgeschwender (professor of American Studies at the LMU) and Michael Veit (management consultant at Goetz Partners) talked about the influence and acceptance of specific corporate cultures in an American environment and debated methods for smooth intercultural communication. In addition, they also gave advice aimed at students for avoiding problems which can arise from intercultural relations. Claus Bitomsky s field report on the plant expansion he supervised for Daimler- Chrysler in Tuscaloosa offered concrete insight into German-American business relations. Intercultural expertise is taking on an ever-increasing amount of significance in the course of global economic networking. We therefore have to deal with cultural differences to an increasing extent said Prof. Hochgeschwender. He also thereby underscored the significance of the international focus of an economics course of study, as the case at the Munich Business School. Success for MBS participants at the Rubicon international student competition e.v.) Randolf Rodenstock came in December and presented his personal views on the current and fundamental questions regarding economics. These included the motivation of businessmen, self-interest and social responsibility as well as economic politicians, work councils and labour unions. A student team from the Munich Business School took third place at the international Rubicon college competition. Lena Gaibinger, Miriam Festerling, Lorenz Zelger and Sandra Pfaffenberger went up against 20 competing teams from Germany, China, India, Italy and Columbia at the multilevel business challenge. The winners were from the Stockholm School of Economics from Riga, and students from the Cologne Business School took second place. The Rubicon college competition was organised by BITS in Iserlohn in the framework of this year s Campus Symposium. In addition to successful managers and businessmen from all over the world, other prominent guests of the convention included former US President Bill Clinton and the former Governor of Hong Kong, Lord Chris Patten. 4
The Return of the Samurai MBS students were involved in the release of a book on the Japanese economy it was released at the beginning of the year and will be presented in a joint event with the scientific publisher Springer. Wintertrophy 2007 This year the Munich Business School again participated in Wintertrophy Europe s largest winter sporting event of private business schools. Some 150 students from more than 15 colleges met at the established location at Hochkönig in Austria on 2 February to take part in the Ski Weekend athletic competition for skiing and snowboarding. The students are no longer there, but their work will still be discussed. As EU diplomat Albrecht Rothacher gave a lecture on economics in Japan last year for 8 th semester students, it quickly became clear that the work with the MBS students would bear fruit. The lecturer supplied the economic analysis and background information and students contributed diverse case studies to the book now titled The Return of the Samurai released by Springer. With a book which for all intents and purposes should attract a certain degree of interest in business literature, the author consciously counters the heavily pronounced orientation towards China at the moment in Asian business. According to the book s main thesis, Japan s economy is still seven times larger than that of China s billion-person population. If the pace of growth were to remain the same, China would not measure up to the Japanese market for at least 30 years. Japan thus remains the most important Asian market in the long term. Its companies are the hardest and most serious competitors on the global market. The analyses of Albrecht Rothacher and the case studies of former MBS students will take centre stage on 26 March, when various Japan experts and representatives of Japanese companies look into the subject of the book and the economic situation in Japan in a panel discussion organised jointly by the publisher and the Munich Business School. In addition to the exchange, the event also particularly aims to improve social contacts, and of course to have a ton of fun. A look ahead An exact date has not yet been determined, but this year the parliamentary state secretary of the Federal Minister of Economics Dagmar Wöhrl is eager to make up her cancelled visit from last autumn. MBS gladly accepts belated anniversary congratulations. Lecture Hall 1 will again fill up on 26 March, when EU diplomat Albrecht Rothacher presents the book he wrote together with Munich Business School students during his function as an MBS instructor. The Return of the Samurai was released at the beginning of the year by the scientific publisher Springer. In a joint event by the publisher and MBS, the authors together with other Japan experts will use a moderated panel discussion to address the question of how the prospects for the Japanese economy and above all the opportunities for European companies look in what continues to be the strongest political economy in Asia. Furthermore, it pays to keep a regular eye on the MBS website for event announcements. There you will find the final dates for benefit events by students as well as other information: 5
A word from the MBS student spokesmen A presentation of the MBS initiatives Ladies and gentlemen, friends of MBS, MBS is improving rapidly our school is on a great path. The commitment of the students is also contributing to the success. For this reason, we as student spokesmen are pleased to present to you a particular part of the student dedication. The initiatives of MBS have all come about voluntarily, and they continue to grow and develop. It is exactly these developments which are increasingly attracting attention outside of the Munich Business School. The public s and particularly the economy s interest in the registered organisations studentsclubbing, MBS Invest and U2B continues to rise. We hope that students will also retain the great deal of interest in voluntary organisations, as we also look forward to interesting projects in the future and hope to perhaps even see additional initiatives evolve into permanent institutions at MBS. We therefore hope you enjoy the following reading material and that with it we able to spark your interest. Your MBS student representatives Stefan Hünermann & Tim Langlotz University to Business or U2B e.v. for short, is one of many student initiatives at the Munich Business School which work independent of the school administration and are self-organised. The association was founded in 1991 as a student consultancy and currently has 25 members. For a start, there are clear guidelines at U2B which determine the course of the initiative and define the long-term goals. The first mission is thus explained by the name we promote dialogue and the close co-operation between the Munich Business School and business, for example through semester-accompanying projects with companies. With this we offer our fellow students occupational orientation guides, establish contacts for possible internships as well as bachelor s and master s theses and thus hope to strategically support the establishment of the Munich Business School among the leading German business schools. In order to achieve these goals, our activities are based on three pillars: First, the organisation and presentation of lectures and lecture series. Second, the carrying out of consulting mandates. Third, the organisation and realisation of symposia. As such, we have enabled a number of lectures and lecture series to be carried out with a lot of pep and fun in the last few years. U2B e.v. has thereby managed to bring numerous well-known representatives of German and international business, including Prof. h.c. Péter Horváth (founder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Horváth & Partners Management Consultants), Dr. Claus Hipp (founder and CEO of HiPP GmbH & Co. KG) and Prof. h.c. Roland Berger (founder and Supervisory Board member of Roland Berger Strategy Consults). At the end of their very interesting speeches, they engaged in insightful discussions with students, professors and alumni. In this field, lectures in the scope of the 15-year anniversary above all were supported and accompanied by MBS in the winter semester 2006/07. We see the information exchange and the maintenance of contact with alumni of MBS as a one-time chance for both former students and for our freshmen. As such, we organised an informative and sociable alumni night at the end of 2006 at the Rechts der Isar bar in Munich outlook A symposium with the theme Germany seeks founders is planned for the summer semester 2007, which is to take place at the Allianz Arena in June. The planning and preparation is being carried out by a 6 th -semester project group in co-operation with U2B e.v. In addition, a business exchange titled Young and Successful is planned for the second quarter of This symposium will focus on student exchanges with young, successful businessmen and managers as well as a glimpse into classic start-ups. We are of the opinion that the early, continuous self-initiative of students can contribute to promoting key factors such as responsible project work, as the successful handling of ever-emerging challenges will also be essential for our future. After all, those who only do what they already can will only ever be what they already are! 6
students-clubbing was formed some years ago as an initiative and today is a non-profit organisation which lobbies for the following: The promotion of communication and co-operation with economic faculties of other German, European and international colleges The promotion of corporate engagement of business students The promotion of art, culture and education The procurement and forwarding of funding for the support of the physically disabled The promotion of communication among students in different semesters and the integration of guest students The issue of corporate identity was also dealt with to a great extent this year. The organisation received a new, modern logo, which in spite of everything is ageless and can be used for the different sections of student-clubbing e.v. This was also followed by a new internet presence the new homepage has been up and running since the end of January This provides general information on the club, its members, the Management Board, organisation, etc. and current news on events planned for the future. In addition to the general organisational events, the winter semester of course also involved many events, starting with the welcome party for our first-semester and home comers from their semester abroad through to the Christmas party, where completions of final exams were deservedly celebrated. True to the students clubbing name, the night continued with a joint visit of Munich s nightlife. As in the past year, there will also be one or more culinary trips in the coming semester, where restaurants of different nations are visited in order to become familiar with the culinary sides of different cultures. This is an event that fully fits in with the internationality of MBS. The Running Dinner has meanwhile become a true cult event. Here teams from the different years and guest students are formed to promote communication among one another. The teams first cook for each other and subsequently meet again to mingle. The Lange Nacht der Münchener Museen or long night of Munich museums was a successful contrast to everyday university life. The three-hour tour through Schwabing and the city centre included visits to museums and small, tucked away galleries. Every semester, guest students are actively integrated into the MBS community, for example through a Bavarian evening, a scavenger hunt during Oktoberfest, sight-seeing tours and several other events outside of the school. A tutor programme furthermore aims to help guest students and first-semester students find a contact partner for quickly getting settled. MBS-Invest e.v. was founded in 2005 by seven Munich Business School students. The organisation s goal is to offer interested students supplementary insight into university lectures in the theory and practice of market investment. As a member organisation of the German Association of Capital Market Groups at Universities, we are part of Germany s largest student initiative with more than 6,000 members of more than 60 member organisations. As such, we have a corresponding pool of possibilities to fall back on which match our goals. The organisation is committed to the cultivation, education and promotion of equity culture in Germany. We organise lecture events with economics experts and seminars as well as excursions to stock exchanges, companies, annual general meetings, stock market games and discussion rounds. In past semesters we successfully began the Introduction to Financial Markets lecture series, which we will continue this semester. Thanks to our good contact with alumni, we have already managed to win over speakers from HypoVereinsbank as well as the private bank Reuschel and organise well-frequented lectures. As a special treat we were able to present a lecture by Harald Christ, Chairman of the Executive Board of the market newcomer HCI. 7
