Mrs Helen Camden-Bermingham Contact Person Principal s Foreword Introduction Mary Immaculate Primary School is an inner city Catholic co-educational primary school located at 616 Ipswich Road, Annerley. The school is part of the Archdiocese of Brisbane Catholic Education community of schools. Mary Immaculate has a rich tradition of providing an inclusive, Catholic education to the families of Annerley and beyond. This learning community is gifted with families from diverse social and cultural backgrounds as well as many faith traditions. Together, we work to form a life learning community that seeks to build a more just world through quality education. was a very busy year, with the completion of our new school facilities an undercover sports area and a new multipurpose (Art) room, as a result of the Federal Government s Building the Education Revolution stimulus package. Our participation in the National Partnership program provided additional financial resources for staff professional development and resources. Celebrations for the canonisation of St Mary MacKillop with our neighbouring girls high school, Our Lady s College Annerley, was a highlight of the year. 2 Curriculum offerings Our distinctive curriculum offerings Team model of Student Leadership, allowing all Year 7 students to have a specific leadership role with specific duties and responsibilities. The Virtues Program incorporated with the Mary Immaculate Behaviour Management Policy/Program Middle/Senior School Choir Performs with 10 other primary schools in the Catholic Schools Choral Festival, and in the Qld Catholic Schools' Music Festival (QCMF) each year and at other special events - the Formation of a Junior School Choir participation in QCMF Outdoor Education Program Beach Camp Years 5-7 Dance Cart dance program Prep to Year 7 Social skills programs, eg. Alert program, incorporated into classroom programs with the support of the Guidance Counsellor. 3 How Information and Communication Technologies are used to assist learning Information Communication Technology (ICT) has been a major focus in the school for the past 5 years. By the end of Semester 1,, each class was equipped with an interactive whiteboard and accompanying laptop. Teamboard and Easiteach programs as well as other ready made / teacher made resources are used to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom. Teachers have accessed professional development through Brisbane Catholic Education (Education Officer: Curriculum ICLT) and Direct National (distributors). A Macintosh Lab of 12 computers is also available in the library for class use. Each classroom has an average of 3 PCs used for individual and small group work. Classroom teachers plan with the Curriculum Support Teacher to embed ICLT into units of work. Social climate Mary Immaculate School is an inclusive community, made up of families from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Families value the size and the multicultural makeup of the school and feel this contributes to the positive sense of community that exists. The Watson Road Behaviour Management program is proactive, using social skills booklets, charts and posters as key resources. This program is supported by our Code for Peaceful Relationships, which summarises in a positive and empowering way, the behavioural expectations of all within our community, and the Virtues Program which encourages children to nurture virtues such as respect, generosity, humility, compassion, honesty and reliability. The staff, School Board and P&F Committee actively promote the involvement of families in all aspects of school life and continually look for ways to support all families in the school and to build community. The Guidance Counsellor works with teachers to provide social skills programs that enhance the development of positive, peaceful relationships across the school. The school employs a bilingual aide to assist with communication between school and African families. This has been instrumental in building up positive and supportive relationships with these families, and giving staff a greater insight into how customs and behaviour are managed in the home situation. It also helps to develop staff understanding of the need for all in the community to be sensitive to different cultural practices. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction with the school Staff have a strong, positive rapport and individuals have expressed that they feel very supported by their colleagues during difficult times. They have the opportunity to raise and discuss any concerns at weekly staff meetings. If staff have any personal concerns they address them with the Principal and a satisfactory outcome sought. Students say it s a friendly, multicultural school where everyone feels they belong. Senior students love the buddy program where they help the new Preps settle in. "On your first day you're guaranteed to make a friend!" Parent comments include... I am really impressed with the way the school caters for those children with food allergies. They are never left out, whether it is tuckshop day or a special activity day such as Harmony Day. Together and collaboratively many wonderful things have been achieved and will continue to be. (P&F) The school website is fantastic! There is so much information. You get a feel for what the school is like. The teachers are very supportive when there is a crisis in a family situation. What I really like is the personal nature of the school - every child is known by his/her name. 3

4 Involving parents in their child s education Staff actively promote the involvement of parents in a variety of ways including classroom and sporting programs and activities to promote and support the school. For example, Support-a-Reader, literacy groups, celebrations of learning, sports carnivals, classroom and school liturgical celebrations, parish sacramental celebrations, weekly assemblies, parent teacher information evenings and interviews, forums regarding current education initiatives, eg. early years curriculum. Parents are also actively involved through the P&F Association and School Board. The P&F supports the school with fundraising activities to provide classroom and playground resources. They also coordinate the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop. Parents are kept informed through a weekly newsletter, which is also posted on the school website. The website contains other information such as minutes of P&F meetings, school calendar, policies and procedures. A number of components of the school's Internal Review process have included surveys for parents. The School Board is instrumental in writing and reviewing school policies.
