1 BRICK TOWNSHIP BOARD OF EDUCATION M ARCH 2017 Superintendent s Corner Read Across America Day Warren H. Wolf Elementary School staff and administrators enjoyed celebrating the 113th Birthday of Dr. Seuss as did all the schools within the district. Read Across America Day, March 2nd, was a day to promote reading and an awareness to reading, with a variety of activities centered around Books. There were classroom visits by celebrity readers, shared reading groups, Dr. Seuss activities and much more. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Read Across America Day 1 World Language Week 1 Midstreams - Little Mermaid 2 Math & Engineering Night 2 Adopt-a-Pilot Program 3 Emma Havens New Sign 3 Calendar Winner 3 Cupcake Wars 4 Miss Nelson has a Field Day 4 Power Save Team 4 Lake Riviera Middle School librarian, Mrs. Kerwin, organized special activities in celebration of Read Across America Day. Students and teachers were invited to check out books from the library and when doing so, they were entered into a raffle to win reading-inspired raffle baskets. There were over 480 books checked out during the week! The school also participated in a themed door decorating contest, Oh, the Places You ll Go with Reading. As shown below, doorways were transformed into illustrated scenery for all to enjoy. World Language Week During National Foreign Language Week, March 6th thru 10th, Brick Memorial High School French, Spanish, and Italian National Honor Society students visited Herbertsville Elementary School. The high school students taught engaging World Language lessons, in hopes of stirring a desire to pursue learning World Languages.

2 P AGE 2 Midstreams Little Mermaid Midstreams Elementary School performed their annual play this month for parents and staff. All shows were sold out for their rendition of The Little Mermaid. Everyone was thoroughly entertained by the lively acting and singing! The cast truly brought the show to life and everyone was transformed to under the sea. Bravo! Family Math & Engineering Night Emma Havens Young Elementary School hosted a Family Math & Engineering Night Tuesday, March 1, The families of Kindergarteners through 2nd Grade enjoyed a night of fun and learning by participating in interactive math games. For Grades 3 through Grade 5, they participated in activities designed to promote engineering awareness. Participants moved throughout classrooms where teachers facilitated grade appropriate activities intended to show both students and parents how exciting it can be to practice math skills. Emma s All Purpose Room was transformed into nine different stations, where each station was designed to promote cooperation and real-world problem solving.

3 P AGE 3 Adopt-a-Pilot Program On Tuesday, March 21, 2017, students in Mrs. Pratt & Ms. Wehner s 5th grade class at Emma Havens Young Elementary School were lucky enough to take part in a fantastic Adopt-A-Pilot Program first introduced by Southwest Airlines in The program was a supplementary way to educate students through aviation-themed activities related to Science, Geography, Math, Writing and other core subjects. The class adopted Pilot Rich Scraggs and was thrilled with his weekly classroom visits. When Pilot Scraggs visited the class, he spoke passionately about a variety of topics including being tenacious and setting lofty goals for yourself. He encouraged students to define, articulate and plan for future success. In addition, the students were able to take part in experiments and even mapped Pilot Scraggs trips. Emma Havens New Sign Brick DARE Officer John Alexander, coordinated a project to create a new sign for Emma Havens Young Elementary School. The project was a collaboration of many efforts and the district is so grateful to Officer John for all of his efforts. Mr. Elmendorf and Mrs. Cooper, of Lake Riviera Middle School, enlisted the help of their shop class students and the Lead & Seed Program to create a vibrant new sign showcasing the school mascot, a dolphin. The Emma Havens PTA generously donated money to jumpstart the project. In the coming weeks, the sign will be moved closer to the entrance, a solar light will be installed to illuminate the sign and local Scout troops will be on hand to plant flowers. In addition, the middle school students will use this project as their submission into the Technology Student Association construction challenge, which is to be held at The College of New Jersey. At the ceremony of dedication, former DARE officers were present, as was Councilman Mummolo and Mrs. Czarnecki, from Lake Riviera Middle School. Health Awareness Calendar Winner Congratulations to Osbornville Elementary School Fifth Grader, Grace Rodenberg! Ms. Rodenberg won the Mental Health Awareness Calendar Contest and will have her artwork featured in the Ocean County Division of Human Services Calendar. Grace's illustration was one of the twelve illustrations receiving the award!

4 P AGE 4 Cupcake Wars Lake Riviera Middle School s cooking teacher, Ms. Cooper, in conjunction with the Mayor s Office, coordinated a Cupcake Wars Decorating Contest. This was a delectable contest in which Mayor Ducey assisted in judging. Miss Nelson Has A Field Day On March 22, 2017, Warren H. Wolf Elementary School hosted their annual family event where they presented a professional theatre production of Miss Nelson has a Field Day. As shown below, Warren H. Wolf Staff prepared for the event by getting into the act. Power Save Team Look out! The Osbornville Elementary School Power Save Team are on the hunt for Energy Hogs and Energy Stars. They consciously check lights, computers, and projectors in classrooms/offices to conserve when they can and thank those who are Energy Stars.
