2 A bit about Palanca and our school Palanca is a small village situated on the Trotus Valley on the border between two historical Romanian regions Moldavia and Transilvania. It is spreaded in the mountains. What you see in the picture is the main part of the village but you can find find houses even 20 kilometers from here on the creeks which flows toward Trotus. There are around 3200 inhabitants and their main occupations are growing animals and exploiting wood. Here are two of our pupils dressed up in traditional clothes. The history of this place was quite agitated. Being situated in the passage between mountains everybody pass over here. The Turks, the Tatars and others in their incursions to Central Europe. Also during both World Wars there were fights in this region. During the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Palanca was a border locality. The Austro-Hungarians build here a fortress which was used as a quarantine against plague. Today it can be seen ruins of this fortress.

A child start kindergarten at the age of 3. When he is 6 or 7 he starts primary school. Here they study almost all subjects with one teacher (except foreign languages, religion and sport. Starting with fifth grade they go to gymnasium (5-th to 8-th grade). Here they study every subject with one teacher. We are seven graders now. 5 Sorcova "Sorcova" is a custom meant to ensure good crops for the year which just begin. People visit their relatives and friends and throw corn, wheat or rice in the four corners of the house and wish to the host richness and fulfillments. J a n u a r y Eminescu was an romantic poet with a work of incomparable depth, originality and artistical value. He is considered the most representative poet for our culture. 7 Martisorul On first of March girls offer to a boy, or to many, small symbols of spring tighten with red and white silk strings. This represents the fight between good and bad, winter and summer. Then on eighth of March the boy have to give back to the girls that offered him a martisor a little gift. Women s Day is when women and girls are in the center of attention.. 8 Fools Day Every year, on the first of April, a messenger arrives unexpectedly and the good will of smile: Fools Day. The jokes of my friends and classmates were often to well planned to fail and we found ourselves laughing. Palm Sunday This celebration means the entrance of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. It is celebrated a week before Easter. We go to church with flowers and the priest has to bless them. Then we take the flowers back home and place them in front of the icons. A p r i l Easter Easter is the celebration of Jesus resurrection. The families reunite and eat lamb, a special pie called Pasca and a lot of good things. We offer gifts to each others. 9 M a y Europe s Day Europe s Day is also known as the Schuman Declaration day. We usually celebrate in school with different activities. This year, for example, we had a contest with issues about the geography and history of European countries Europe s Day Madalin s birthday

10 Children s Day We celebrate it in school with various contests like paining on the street, or street dancing. 1 Children s Day J u n e Christ s Rising It is celebrated 40 days after Easter. We go to church were is a special service. On this day it is also our locality celebration and a lot of people meet and have barbecue. 12 A u g u s t In Palanca there are two churches, one is Orthodox and the other one Catholic. The two Churches Days are celebrated exactly the same: people bring food to church, set tables and after it s blessed by the priest they invite relatives and friends to join them at the meal Orthodox s Church Day Oana s birthday Catholic s Church Day 31 Octavian s birthday

13 The first day of school After a three months of vacation school begins on the twelfth of September. Usually, the headmaster introduces the new teachers, the priest bless the school and the people in the school and the mayor give us a speech. 16 Romania s National Day On the first of December is Romania s national Day because on this date in 1918 Transylvania was reunited with Romania. We celebrate it at school with contests on historical themes, songs and poems. Saint Nicholas Day The custom is that kids polish their boots on the evening of the fifth of December and wait to find presents in their boots. If they were good they get sweets or small gifts, if not, they get a stick. Most of the children get both. D e c e m b e r On Christmas Eve it is customary to go caroling. A carol is a song that speaks about the birth of Jesus Christ. On the night of Christmas Eve, Santa Claus brings presents and puts them under the Christmas tree.
