3 MISSION STATEMENT The Mission Statement of the Yankton School District is to optimize student potential for success in a global society. BELIEF STATEMENTS 1. Education is a partnership among the community, parents, students and school personnel; high standards are essential for this partnership to be successful. 2. The school system provides a safe educational environment, which encourages physical, emotional, and academic growth in a culturally diverse society. 3. Learning is enhanced by a positive and supportive atmosphere, which encourages creativity, builds self-esteem, and recognizes students success. 4. Learning requires recognition of each student s instructional style and the use of effective methods, which make learning interesting and individualized. 5. Ethical values, including an appreciation of diversity, integrity, compassion, courage, commitment, and responsibility, are integral to the learning process. 6. With proper guidance, students are capable of making informed choices and are responsible for their actions. 7. 4 Yankton High School Course Syllabus Spanish I Course Description: In Spanish I the student will become familiar with the basics of the Spanish language and culture. Students will learn to speak, read, write and understand basic spoken Spanish. Student Evaluation Plan: Quarter Grade: Tests 50% Quizzes 30% Daily Work 20% Semester Grade Based on 50% of each quarter in that semester Letter Grade Guidelines: As per Yankton High School student handbook QUARTER ONE Goal One: Students will demonstrate knowledge of greetings and leave takings. 1. use polite and accepted forms of greetings and leave taking. 2. use informal forms of greetings and leave taking. 3. respond appropriately to greetings and leave takings. 4. correctly spell and read greetings and leave takings. Goal Two: Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic Spanish vocabulary. 5. spell and pronounce days of the week. 6. spell and pronounce months of the year. 7. spell and pronounce numbers 0-1,000, spell and pronounce classroom objects. 9. spell and pronounce the four seasons. 4

Students will be able to read, write and speak in the target language with correct pronunciation, intonation, inflection and syntax. The course will also analyze and discuss the concepts presented in Spanish literature selections. 18 Yankton High School Course Syllabus AP Spanish Course Description: AP Spanish will offer to the fourth year foreign language student a progressive, thorough and challenging learning situation in the use of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, conversation and cultural themes as related to the Spanish-speaking world. The course will encompass oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and composition. The course will emphasize the use of Spanish in the AP curriculum with the following objectives: 1. The ability to comprehend formal and informal spoken Spanish; 2. The acquisition of vocabulary and a grasp of structure to allow the reading of Spanish articles and short stories; 3. The ability to compose expository passages; and 4. The ability to express ideas with accuracy and fluency.
