21 SUBJECT BASED BANDING Removal of streams in Primary 5 and 6 To provide more flexibility to students with strengths and abilities that vary across subjects Every child will be encouraged to develop his strong subject(s) To encourage greater interaction among students with different strengths

30 SUBJECT BASED BANDING: Q & A SWITCHING TO A MORE DEMANDING SUBJECT COMBINATION A student who does very well at P5 may be allowed to switch 1 or 2 foundation subject (s) to the standard level at P6, if they are able to bridge the gap

31 SUBJECT BASED BANDING: Q & A SWITCHING TO A LESS DEMANDING SUBJECT COMBINATION (NO PARENTAL OPTION) A student who has considerable difficulties coping with subjects at the standard level in P5 will switch to 1 or more subject (s) to the foundation level at P6

32 P5 to P6 Promotion Exercise Cohort promotion for students There will be no change in class for a student unless there is a change in his/her subject combination 1 Foundation class; 3 mixed ability classes and 2 High-progress classes Differentiated Instruction for MTL and mixed ability classes

33 Support for Your Child Recognise that every student is different in terms of their readiness, interest and learning styles Praise your child for his/her effort and progress Don t compare her with other students or students from other classes Every child should aim to be the best he/she can be (not aim to be in the best class or xxx secondary school)

34 Primary School Leaving Examination PSLE

35 Primary School Leaving Examination (wef 1993) The PSLE is modified to serve as a placement examination. All P6 pupils will take the PSLE which assesses their suitability for Secondary Education and places them in an appropriate Sec. School course: the Special / Express the Normal Course (Academic / Technical)

37 Placement Placement into courses and posting to Sec. Schools of choice is based on the aggregate score for the subjects taken in the PSLE The reporting of the results to pupils are made in terms of grades for each subject & their aggregate score. Their eligibility for the various courses will be given in the result slip.

46 School KCS Sometimes children and their families might need extra support if they are finding it difficult to manage their emotions, behaviour or relationships with peers, teachers or even parents Counselling support for these children has many benefits, they include Relief from ongoing feelings of distress (sadness, anger, worry, frustration) Problem behaviours may be reduced or eliminated Learning to identify and express feelings in healthy ways, which are often at the root of challenging behaviours Discovering existing strengths from which improved self-esteem can be build upon Improved school performance and peer relationships Opportunity for strengthening of the parent-child relationship Reduced stress in family communication and interactions

49 ANNUAL P5 CAMP 2016 Objectives of Camp: Enhance character building through activities which call for independence and self-reliance Provide opportunities in community living thereby inculcating in pupils the spirit of co-operation, mutual assistance and friendship Expose pupils to outdoor pursuits in a natural environment Promote creative and innovative enterprise among our pupils Foster interaction between students and teachers Make outdoor camping an adventure to experience

50 ANNUAL P5 CAMP 2016 Date of Camp: 18 to 20 Feb (Thur-Sat) Venue: Labrador Outdoor Adventure Learning Centre Depart School: 8.30 am Return to School: pm Number of Student Campers: 200 to 230

53 SUPPORT YOUR CHILD Set reasonable goals with him/her Focus on developing your child s strengths Emphasise the learning process instead of exam results Avoid comparing your child s performance with that of others. Praise effort, beyond performance Learn to let go so that your child can learn to be independent Encourage friendship

54 SUPPORT YOUR CHILD Help your child establish a daily routine Check your child s daily homework Check your child s handbook. If your child is expected to stay in school, a letter will be issued. Emphasise the importance of education the learning of all subjects (Build the foundation) Reinforce the values taught in school Communicate with teachers ( , handbook, parents engagement platforms etc)

56 HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP School Policies Homework: (9 to 12 hrs/wk for Std; 5hrs/wk for Fdn) Attendance: Students are expected to produce an MC or a parent s letter if they are absent from school. Parents are encouraged to call the school to inform the Form Teacher of your child s absence, especially so if child has contacted infectious diseases such as HFMD, chicken pox. Late Coming: All students must be in school by 7.30 am for the morning assembly.

57 HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP KCS Examinations Policy In alignment to national examinations practices, there will be no re-sit for P2 to 6 students who are absent for Listening Comprehension and written papers in CA / SA / Prelim. For students who are absent from the oral component, teachers will make arrangements to test the students individually. The last day of the oral examination is the final day of the last written papers.

58 HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP KCS Examinations Policy Any absence from examinations must be covered by a medical certificate from a private or government clinic. Students are required to submit their medical certificate(s) to their form teachers on the day they return to school. Students who are absent without a medical certificate/ valid reason will not be awarded any marks. [MC from TCM clinics is not accepted.]

59 HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP KCS Examinations Policy Students who are late for 30 minutes or less are allowed to sit for the full duration of the paper. Students who are late for more than 30 minutes will not be given extra time and they will sit for the remaining duration of the paper.

60 HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP KCS Examinations Policy Students can request to sit for the papers for independent practice when they are well and back in school. However, the marks will not be recorded in the report cards or used for placement purposes.

61 HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP Discipline Discipline is an important aspect in the holistic development of every student. Good discipline is needed to create a conducive environment for work and play in Kheng Cheng School.

62 HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP Discipline All students and parents are to read and adhere to the school rules, as stated in the Student Handbook Acknowledgement on page 10 and after page 16 of the Student Handbook 2016.
