9 Ontario Secondary School Diploma 30 credits 18 compulsory credits 12 elective credits (4 religious studies & 8 electives) 40 hours of community service Literacy requirement

10 Community Service Hours Minimum of 40 hours completed over the 4 years of high school Encourages civic responsibility and promotes community values Build confidence in social situations and adult interaction Gain understanding of our obligation to others Students can begin July 1 st before coming to grade 9

11 Literacy Requirement The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is written in grade 10 Based on language and communication expectations of the curriculum up to and including grade 9 If a student is unable to meet the Provincial Standard in the first attempt: Remedial help will be given Student will have a second attempt at the test Grade 12 Ontario Literacy Course (OLC)

12 Grade 9 Math EQAO Written by all grade 9 students taking Applied and Academic Math Successful completion is NOT a diploma requirement Results count towards final grade 9 Math mark

13 Semester System School year is divided into two equal parts called semesters Students will complete 4 courses each semester for a total of 8 credits for the school year Semester 1-September-January Semester 2-February-June

21 Altering your Pathway Students may be able to move from APPLIED courses in grade 9 to ACADEMIC courses in grade 10 Dependent upon the student s achievement In Math a transfer course is required Moving from LOCALLY DEVELOPED to APPLIED is also possible (extra steps)

24 Work Place Bound Students This pathway is intended for students who do not intend to pursue post secondary education, but instead will be entering the work force after completing high school. 25 College Bound Students This pathway is intended for students who intend to study at the college level upon completion of grade 12. Students in this pathway should have achieved some success in elementary mathematics and are able to work collaboratively within a group, and also complete work independently when required. 28 Choosing a Grade 9 Course You should choose Grade 9 Academic Math (MPM1D1) if You want thorough coverage of the material and need little repetition You enjoy working through word problems You learn from reading and traditional approaches and are ready for abstract thinking You need to know WHY rather than just HOW to do something You are achieving a minimum of 70% in ALL strands at the grade 8 level You LOVE math and are planning on entering into a Math-based program at the university/college level. You should choose Grade 9 Applied Math (MFM 1P1) if You need more repetition, hands-on activities, manipulatives and visuals You need to know HOW not necessarily WHY You need to use a calculator to perform basic operations You are a concrete thinker You are achieving between 55% and 70% in ALL strands at the grade 8 level You are a strong student who plans on entering into a non-math based program at the university/college level. You should choose Grade 9 Locally Developed Math (MAT 1L1) if You have difficulty with basic skills and require one on one assistance You are working on a modified program and are not at grade 8 level when you finish elementary school You are achieving 55% or lower in most strands on your grade 8 report card You enjoy practical math that can be used everyday (such as calculating tax, sale prices, measurement, etc.)

31 Transition Timeline Transition Item September Initial correspondence between St. Roch Guidance and Gr. 8 Teachers October Grade 8 Open House Early November Take Our Kids to High School Day for feeder school students Early December Gr. 8 teachers ½ day session at St. Roch Early December Registration forms/payment due from feeder school students January Guidance counsellors go to feeder schools for myblueprint course selection session May SST/ARD go to Transition meetings at feeder schools August/September Get Ready Program and RISE Orientation Day

32 Registration: Next Steps Feeder school students (in boundary) Students attend Take Our Kids to High School Day- Nov 1st Peel & Non-feeder school students (in boundary) Ensure you live within the St. Roch boundary at Teachers given registration forms for their students Teachers and Parents discuss appropriate Pathway and Teacher Recommendations Parents complete registration forms and payment by Dec. 5th A. School Cash Online-Print receipt & send this and all forms to grade 8 teacher by Dec. 5 th Complete the pre-registration package Submit this and photocopies of all required documents by January 26 th or asap Student and parent will meet with one of our vice principals after which registration forms, course selection and payment can be completed. B. Debit/Credit/Cash- Come to St. Roch with forms and payment on Dec. 5 th 2pm-7pm
