3 BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS ITSC 2321 INTEGRATED SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS II STUDENT EVALUATION COURSE EVALUATION A. Assignments will account for 80% of the total grade. B. Final exam will account for 20% of the total grade. INSTRUCTOR EVALUATION A. Students will be given an opportunity to evaluate their instructor and the course content. B. The instructor will review and evaluate in terms of withdrawal rate. C. Final grades given will be reviewed in an effort to determine if a pattern of high or low grades exists. DEPARTMENT EVALUATION OF COURSE A. Faculty and the Division Chair will review student grades and withdrawal trends. B. Faculty and the Division Chair will review the Course Competencies and Perspectives Assessment.
4 BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS ITSC 2321 INTEGRATED SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS II GENERAL GOALS/OBJECTIVES COURSE CONTENT The focus of this course is on the integration and practical use of features found in word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, presentation and database software. Assignments will be using electronic mail and office style instruction. Students will be expected to use critical-thinking and decision-making skills to complete the assignments. All assignments must be mailable to be considered complete. 1. The student will be allowed references and provided tools. The student will follow instructions. Performance will be satisfactory if instructions are followed and are consistent with resource materials on hand and followed within the time limit. 2. The student will be allowed references. The student will interpret instructions. Performance will be satisfactory if instructions are interpreted and the interpretation is consistent with reference material provided and all instructions are interpreted within the time limit. 3. The student will be allowed references and provided tools. The student will use computer features efficiently. Performance will be satisfactory if features are used efficiently and the use is consistent with reference material. 4. The student will be allowed references. The student will organize materials. Performance will be satisfactory if materials are organized and the organization is consistent with reference material provided and all materials are organized within the time limit. 5. The student will be allowed references. The student will compose business documents. Performance will be satisfactory if the composition of the documents is consistent with the guidelines in Addendum C and the documents are composed within the time limit. 6. Cram. Course Technology, Cengage Learning, 2013 LAB REQUIREMENTS None Applicable. ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES Each student will spend at least two hours per week preparing for class. Because many assignments are prepared during class time, absences may adversely affect the final grade in the class Students will be dropped if they miss more than 20% of the classes before the drop date. Tardies and leaving early will count as one half of an absence. Fall and Spring 15-week Semesters Class Meetings Maximum absences before being dropped One per week 2 Two per week 4 Students are also expected to take care of the equipment in the classroom. PLEASE DO NOT BRING FOOD, DRINKS, OR UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS INTO THE CLASSROOM. It is the student's responsibility to withdraw from a course if circumstances occur that could prevent the student from successfully completing that course. Students should notify instructor of decision to withdraw and must not assume the instructor will complete the paperwork for the student. The instructor will complete required paperwork only if the instructor decides to drop a student for cause. Failure to notify instructor of withdrawal could result in the student failing the course. Please note that changes in the Texas Education Code state that students enrolling for the first time in a Texas public institution of higher education in the fall of 2007 or after, will not be permitted to
9 withdraw from more than a total of six courses (no minimum number of credit hours on each course) in which the student is officially enrolled during the student's period of undergraduate study at all such institutions (this includes any course a transfer student has dropped at another institution of higher education). See for more information. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY TESTING Assignments 80% Final Exam 20% 100% A. ASSIGNMENTS- 80% Each assignment has a maximum value of 100 points. Students will receive the maximum number of points if the assignment is turned in correct on the first try. An assignment is considered correct when it has no calculating errors, no formatting errors, no editing errors, and no typographical errors; and database, spreadsheet, and graphic information is correct.students who turn in assignments that are not correct by the previously mentioned standards will be given two additional tries to complete the job correctly. The maximum number of points given on the second try is 50, and the maximum number of points given on the third try is 20. B. FINAL EXAM- 20% A final exam will be given which will be approximately two hours in length. MAKE-UP POLICY There will be no make-up tests given. If a student misses one test, the grade on the final exam will be put in place of the test grade. If more than one test is missed, a grade of zero will be given for all but the first test. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Students are also expected to use outside class time for organizing materials, interpreting instructions, compiling data, and analyzing final documents. Each student will spend whatever time is necessary preparing for class. Students will be expected to complete the analysis of simulation activities and jobs. Class attendance is critical. All late work will receive a 1 point penalty for each class day it is late. Students will be given an opportunity to evaluate the course and the teacher at the end of the semester. PROJECTS, ASSIGNMENTS, PORTFOLIOS, SERVICE LEARNING, INTERNSHIPS, ETC. Not applicable. SCANS COMPETENCIES The Secretary' Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) identified competencies in the area of Resources, Interpersonal, Information, Systems, and Technology; and foundation skills in the areas of Basic Skills, Thinking Skills, and Personal Qualities. This course is part of a program
10 in which each of these competencies and skills are integrated. For application of specific SCANS competencies and skills in this course, see Addendum C. Activities, jobs and bonus jobs have no grammar errors. All information is correct in the database, spreadsheet and graphic activities, jobs and bonus jobs. ADDENDUM B Standards of Composition Letters and memorandums will be evaluated based on the categories shown below as well as punctuation, grammar, and spelling. Opening: Indirectness or directness needed. Explanation: Presentation of all related information in an objective and convincing style. Clearness: Use of simple, positive, concrete words. Conciseness: Use of short sentences and paragraphs; avoidance of overused and trite words. Coherence: Logically organized paragraphs with suitable transitions. Consideration: Use of correct viewpoint; exercise appropriate writing ethics. Close: Courteous, considerate and individually tailored to message.

Personal Qualities Responsibility, Sociability, Integrity/Honesty Help screens and directories will be identified and used to complete business documents. Databases must be arranged consistently. Instructions are given in an in-basket format. Students use an organizational chart in determining the sender/recipient of data. Students must have a basic knowledge of MS Word for Windows, WordPerfect, PowerPoint, Lotus, and Excel. Advanced commands for MS Word for Windows, WordPerfect, PowerPoint, Excel, and Lotus will be integrated to create business documents. Students must be able to read and understand the textbook, handouts, and screen prompts. Students must be able to perform basic arithmetic functions, properly using the prescribed order of operations. Students must be able to understand and speak the English language. In-basket instructions allows students to make the best decision for the required results. Evaluation of procedures using software functions will be used to troubleshoot problems. Students are expected to follow instructions on all assignments, consult the instructor for assignments when class is missed, and make-up any assignment as directed in the syllabus. Students are expected to discuss assignments with other students, but not to the point that it inhibits one student s efforts, or that one student is doing the work for others. Students are expected to turn in their own work. Cheating is harshly dealt with.
