2 Benefits of Using HVAC Delmar Online Training Simulation: HVAC is a 3-D, immersive simulation that combines sound instructional design with top-quality technology, offering a rich learning experience that mimics field performance. It challenges learners to master diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across five pieces of HVAC equipment common to the industry: Gas Furnace, Oil Furnace, Boiler, Small Commercial Air Conditioner and Central Air Conditioner. To foster successful learning outcomes, Delmar Online Training Simulation: HVAC includes more than one hundred scenarios that allow you to troubleshoot and build diagnostic and critical thinking skills, as well as a Training Mode and Challenge Mode to promote incremental learning. Both modes require you to diagnose a fault or faults and perform the repair successfully while materials and labor costs are tracked. This performance simulation complements live training practice by reinforcing good habits, and even presents scenarios that are impractical (dangerous, expensive, etc.) to create in labs or in a residence. Soft skills are also included within the simulation. Where to Buy Bookstore : HVAC is available at the bookstore. Getting Started Logging In To get started, navigate to: login.cengagebrain.com. If this is your first time using a Cengage Learning Product, you will need to create a new account. Now you will need to enter the HVAC access code which either came with your text or which you purchased online.

3 Complete the Account Information form, read and accept the license agreement, and then click Continue You will now need to select your institution. First select your location, then your institution type. Locate your school through one of the available search options. To access the HVAC product which you just registered, press

4 Joining a Class Once you press Open, you will see the Course Resources screen. Search for your instructor s class by clicking Join Class. Search for your instructor s class and join it. Returning User To get started, navigate to: login.cengagebrain.com. Please log in to your CengageBrain account to activate your product. If you have forgotten your password please select the Forgot Password link to retrieve your password. Walkthrough In this walkthrough, we will use the Split Residential A/C module as the primary simulation to demonstrate the key functionality and features: The Home Portal You should be able to see your name in the upper right; each user has their own personal portal that stores all of their simulation engagements. Section 1 ( Introduction to Delmar Online Training Simulation: HVAC ) is a software FAQ section. If you have any technical problems, you will likely find the answers there. There are 6 modules: 5 pieces of equipment and 1 module on soft skills. There are Feedback Reports in each section. For every scenario, you will get a feedback report.

5 Running a Simulation The simulation is web-based so there are no discs it s all online. No special hardware is required. There will be a small software plug-in required. This will automatically download on the first engagement with the simulation. Setting Up a Simulation Click on Play Split Residential Air Conditioning Simulation. This will take you to a new page. Click on the Training Scenarios Tab. Click on the Drop Down box to display all the faults. Users can choose the faults to practice the troubleshooting procedures for that fault. Now, click on the Challenge Mode tab.

6 Launch and Navigation From the home portal, choose Play Residential Split Air Conditioner. Choose the Training Scenario Tab. Choose the No Fault scenario for simplicity. Press Start Scenario. The first image will be of your phone, which will provide the Service Call. Cli ck Start to acknowledge that you got the service call and want to proceed. Now use the four arrow keys on your keyboard to move. Forward, backward, left and right. You can walk outside or in any direction. This will give you your first sense of immersion. To engage with something simply click on it with your mouse. To try this out, walk in the garage and click on the door that leads into the house. It will open. Walk inside the house/living room and walk toward the thermostat on the wall (on your left). Click on it and you will get a close up view. Turn it to cool (by sliding the system button to the left). Hit the X in the orange tab at the top of the screen. This exits you from the close-up view. You will see the animation of the blue cold air coming out of the supply (grate). In some scenarios this air might be red, indicating that it is not cold. If you successfully fixes the AC, it will become blue again. You will hear the audio start when the fan of the air conditioner starts. Panning and Zooming on Equipment Leave the living room and go back into the garage. Approach the indoor unit of the air conditioner and click on it; this will give you a closer view. Click on the cover again and it will be removed. Now you will get a drop down in the upper right with directions of how to pan and zoom.

7 You can begin by panning, which should give you an idea of the 3D effect. Hold the left button on your mouse down and move your mouse you will get panning effect. You can also do this with the four arrow keys on our key board. This is part of what makes HVAC so useful in accurately mimicking the real life experience. Now, use the right click on the mouse to do two things. By clicking the right mouse button one time, you can center the screen wherever the mouse is. By holding the right mouse button down, and moving your mouse, you can zoom in and out. You can also do this with the scroll wheel on a mouse.

8 Using Tabs There are four tabs on the left hand of the screen. The top one is the Repair Summary. This will be auto-populated with any repairs that you make while engaged with the AC. The dollars will be associated with each choice. Click the $ sign to bring up the Repair Summary and click the $ again to minimize it. The second tab is the Tool Box. Click on the wrench to expand the toolbox. Each module will have the appropriate tools for the Particular equipment.

9 Using Tabs There are four tabs on the left hand of the screen. The top one is the Repair Summary. This will be auto-populated with any repairs that you make while engaged with the AC. 10 The third tab is the Troubleshooting Guide This is an important component of the simulation, as it is a road-map to help guide you through the troubleshooting process. Click on the blue arrow below the guide to scroll. The fourth tab is a help tab. Note that when you scroll over certain tabs or parts, a pop-up note often appears, providing more detail, or instructions. This is because you are in Help Mode.

11 To demonstrate this further, put your mouse over a part on the AC. Notice the part label appears. Double click on it. You will get an orange box to upper left with options. One option is More Info. Click on this. You will see a description of the part. The Help Mode can be deactivated by going to the upper right and clicking on the silver button. Scoring There are five possible stars in the upper right hand corner. There are four stars already lit up because we chose a no fault scenario. If we had a faulted scenario, we would start at zero stars and get stars as we replaced the correct part(s) and did the required clean-up work. Using Tools Click on second tab, the Tool Box. Choose the top tool -- Multimeter. (Tool usage is very realistic, and the Furnace equipment is modeled on the real thing so measurements will be realistic.) Click on the dial to move it to the right one click, which will make the probes appear Click on red probe

12 Place probe on any pulsing light on the Furnace somewhere Click on black probe Place probe on any pulsing light on the Furnace. (To hide the Multimeter turn the dial to the off position.) Wire Diagrams While probes are still active on the Furnace, click on the + button on the Wire Diagram in the lower right hand corner. The wire diagram will expand for visibility. The probes are displayed on the wire diagram representing where they were placed on the furnace. Click on the three color circles in the lower right of the wiring diagram. This allows you to better view the diagram and compare it to what you are seeing in the air conditioner.

13 Replacing Faulty Parts Almost 20 parts on the air conditioner can be replaced. This includes both the indoor unit and the condenser which is outside to the left of the garage. To do so, click on a part for example the black box in the middle with all the wires coming out of it (the IFR) in the middle of the unit. You will get the orange box with the name of the part, in this case IFR. The box offers several choices: Cancel, Replace part, or More Info. Choose Replace. You will get a prompt telling the user the cost of doing the replacement Press Proceed and the part will be replaced. You will see a small animation providing visual evidence of the part replacement. Now choose the Repair Summary tab ($). Notice that the replacement part is now listed on the Repair Order.

14 Assignments and Grading Report Cards When you ve completed the simulation, choose the red End button at the bottom of the screen. After a prompt to make sure you are choosing to leave the simulation, it will automatically put you back in the users report card section. This section keeps records of all the attempts in the simulation with the latest attempt listed at the top. It also shows you the time the user spent in the simulation for each scenario Click on the View Report button. Now you will see a detailed breakdown of that effort. It includes time, if the equipment was fixed at the right cost, and if you did the appropriate soft skills which includes cleaning up with the broom, and placing the cover back on the furnace. Completing the repair correctly, at the right price and incorporating those soft skills will earn you five stars (the soft skills - broom use and cover replaced add the fifth star). It also has a detailed account of the parts that should have been fixed and were actually fixed.

15 Soft Skills Soft skills is in a Question and Answer, game-show like format. It is not an immersive simulation like the other modules Click on the link on the home portal/course Resources screen to get to the opening screen. Choose a level. Answer some questions. You will see when you get questions right, the Blue Manometer gauge will register the correct answer. When you get something wrong, you will get the Red Manometer gauge smoking. The harder the levels, the fewer answers you can get wrong before the gauge blows up in smoke.
