Both research and evidence-based proposals are encouraged for submission. Please align your submission to the session type as shown on the Session Types and Details page of the ALC website or within this Call for Proposals guide. To submit a session proposal, please complete the form found on the conference website s Call for Proposals page. About the Conference Advancing Learning has been the province s premiere instructional technology conference since the 1990s. We ve prided ourselves in fostering an environment where educators (faculty, instructional designers, multimedia and graphic specialists) share their direct classroom and faculty support experiences with other colleagues. Where else can you learn first-hand from practicing educators about a host of topics related to educational technology, digital tools and environments, and student engagement? This grassroots approach really does help with advancing learning in Ontario.

As this year s host institution, Fanshawe College is proud to invite you to join what will be an engaging and inspirational conference designed to promote and present the best in technology-enabled teaching and learning the Ontario college system has to offer Conference Theme This year s theme will focus on the idea of Innovation. We re calling it the IN Conference: Innovate, Invent, Inspire. We believe that innovation happens when ideas take flight, and the stylized wing in our logo is meant to represent our shared journey through education innovation. Innovation in education is how we, as educators, continue to thrive in this rapidly changing learning environment. Innovation is how we respond to, revolve around, and guide learning success and student satisfaction. Whether embracing emerging technology, incorporating new learning theories, or designing virtual classrooms, now more than ever it is imperative that academic leaders, faculty, and administrators alike come together to ensure that our pedagogies are progressive, sustainable and continually break new ground. Advancing learning innovation requires continuous visionary leadership from all disciplines. And that s why we re inviting you to join us May 23 rd to 25 th, in London, Ontario. Together we will challenge our teaching and learning paradigms, reimagine the learning experience, and explore how disruptions in education today will shape the innovative classroom of tomorrow. Be innovative, be inventive, and be inspirational: this is our guiding mission for ALC. At the Advancing Learning Conference, you will: Learn about innovative research and practices related to institutional change, quality assurance, collaboration, lifelong learning and the latest trends in online, open and flexible and technologyenabled learning. Share innovative ideas and best practices with other educators and administrators from the province. Be inspired by new modes of teaching, learning, course design and delivery in higher education. Engage with inventions from private sector providers of leading-edge technologies and creative applications of technology in learning. Interact with partners and collaborators for projects and research through networking opportunities. Inquire about emerging technologies in education and view demonstrations or services from leading technology providers Session Descriptions In breaking with industry trends, instead of using the term strands or tracks, this year ALC will use the novel concept of IN sessions, thus enabling us to apply this prefix to the conference s three

3 3 majors themes - Innovation, Invention, and Inspiration - and to create an immersive, inclusive, and interactive conference experience. The following sessions types will be delivered concurrently as either Concurrent Sessions A, B, or C Session Types INSPIRE Sessions (15 Minutes) Concurrent Session A Inspire Sessions are informal electronic presentations to elicit and share ideas with your peers. These conversational sessions will take place in a shared open reception space, and each presenter will be located at a numbered kiosk-style station. These sessions should include a brief (10-15 minutes maximum) presentation that can be repeated to attendees over a 45 minute time period, as required. These digital presentations can include works in progress, research ideas, collaboration opportunities, best practices, show & tell solutions, practical or technology-based applications, or pilot projects. This session type provides an excellent opportunity to present your ideas and inspire your peers in a forum in which you can interact informally. Please note that each presenter must bring his/her own laptop and any additional handouts or materials, as needed.. A small table for your laptop and power to the table will be provided. Wireless Internet will also be available to allow for further exploration of related Inspire Session content. INVENT Sessions (45 Minutes Presentations) Concurrent Session B Invent presentations are formal sessions that will feature a minute presentation and 5-10 minute period for questions, answers, and discussion to engage the audience. These sessions typically involve one or two individuals presenting an invention-based approach to an issue. Traditional research approaches as well as singular or collaborative projects can be explored. Projects can be completed or works-in-progress, and they can also include, but are not limited to, inventive classroom experiences in teaching and learning, or invention and application of new educational technologies. This type is a single/standalone presentation format. Interactive presentations are opportunities to present in detail on a project, and to sharing valuable insights with attendees. INNOVATE Sessions (45 Minutes Panels) Concurrent Session C Innovate sessions are panel discussions that will be 45 minutes in length. Ideally, panels have a diverse composition and are typically comprised of panelists (with diverse backgrounds, experience, affiliation, location, other) who will discuss, debate, and share innovative perspectives and ideas on a specific emerging topic or issue. A panel will consist of 2-4 subject-matter experts. A moderator will be assigned to provide a context for the theme of the panel discussion (based on CFP submissions) and then each presenter speaks for about 5 to 10 minutes, sharing their perspective of the theme. The discussion should be framed as a current trend or issue in educational technology or technology-enabled teaching and learning and provides any background they believe is necessary to frame the discussion. The

4 4 audience then engages in sharing ideas, information, raising questions, and sharing what has worked or has not worked in their community, agency, or institution. The moderator manages the discussion to ensure everyone has the chance to be involved. Panels should not be talking heads, but rather allow for participant engagement, discussion, and exchange between all in attendance. Keynote, Plenary and Networking Sessions The following session descriptions are informational purposes only; they do not require a CFP from delegates. INQUIRY Sessions Keynote Address: A 90 minute welcome, introduction, and a focused address for all delegates gathered in the main conference hall venue. Keynote Speaker TBA Closing Plenary: A 90 minute moderated plenary for all delegates gathered in the main conference hall venue. This will involve a 2 to 3-minute introduction and outline of the plenary topic. 3 to 5 presentations exploring major developments, trends, challenges and opportunities related to the conference theme of Innovation, Invention, and Inspiration in the teaching and learning landscape for 2019 and beyond. This will be followed by 15 to 20 minutes of questions and answers INTERACT Sessions In the spirit of collaboration and engagement with peers, ALC will allocate various opportunities throughout the conference to engage in informal conversations about educational technology and teaching and learning as well as social and networking opportunities. A central vendor-like space and café setting will be available to socialize and explore questions from available participants and delegates. Interact sessions will run in-between concurrent sessions and after sessions conclude. Additional socializing opportunities and networking opportunities will be available for all delegates in the evenings. A detailed conference schedule will be provided on the ALC website, closer to the conference date. How will CFPs be selected? Presenters should include active engagement methodology during presentations to encourage audience/participants to ask questions. The CFP ratings are based on the following major categories: Relevance to the conference Clarity of Expression Audience Appeal Interactivity (Active Engagement)

5 5 Please note that each individual is limited to no more than three (3) submissions, including the roles of presenter, co-presenter, or panelist. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee and should demonstrate the connection between technology and education. Presenters must register for the conference. They are expected to pay their own conference fees and expenses are to be covered by the speakers. Should a proposal be selected, the abstract and bios submitted will be printed in the conference program/website exactly as submitted. Biographies may include presenters positions, school, and major work accomplishments relevant to the presenter s session topic. Speakers can provide links that provide more information about themselves. Proposals must be complete at time of submission it is not sufficient to note information to be added later. Incomplete proposals will not be considered in the review process. Important Information for Presenters Educators are invited to share their expertise and experiences with technology in the educational environment. Proposals should demonstrate best practices, use technology to enhance the scholarship of teaching and learning, and promote the innovation in teaching, student learning, and assessment practices. Sessions should focus on lessons learned, challenges, and issues encountered. As you work through the proposal submission process, you will be asked to select associated tags within your proposed IN session type. These tags will enable us to curate and showcase themes and trends through the proposal process as well as the virtual and on-site conference experience. You will be able to select more than one tag option within each session, and if need be, add a unique keyword to your proposal submission. We encourage collaboration among colleagues and Colleges. If your proposal is accepted, you will be asked to: Register for the conference and pay the published fees. Edit all materials used in your session. Upon request, submit your PowerPoint Slides, Handout (PDF files), data charts, or other presentation materials to a conference repository, which may be curated and made available for distribution on the conference website. Proposal Requirements Presenters will be required to submit proposals using the electronic submission form on the ALC conference website. All presenters must provide the following information:

Identify Preferred Session Type Please select either an INSPIRE session (15 minute, informal repeat session), INVENT Session (45 Minutes Presentation), or an INNOVATE session (45 Minutes Panels). Depending on the number and range of topic submissions, the committee may suggest an alternate format during the planning process. Presenters will be notified about a suggested change in session type. 2. Session Title Please select a title that accurately reflects the focus of your presentation. Session titles will appear on the conference website and in the conference mobile app, which will be used by delegates to select sessions they wish to attend. 3. Session Description Provide a detailed description of your proposed session approximately 100 to 300 words (max limit). Your submission should include a description of your session, your goal(s), and any challenges, lessons learned, success and failures, possible applications to the teaching and technology-enabled learning environment, and the level of the technical nature of the presentation. In addition, please indicated if participants are required or encouraged to bring any additional technology (such cellphones or mobile devices) to get the most out of your session. 4. Names, Contact Information, School, and Biographies This is required for all speakers and panel members. Biographies must not be longer than 400 characters per speaker/panel member. 5. Audio-Visual Needs Please indicate any special technology needs for your presentation. We will endeavor to provide technology requests; however, we cannot guarantee availability. All presentation venues contain: A data projector Windows PC with internet connections Hookups for external computers/laptops/tablets (internet/audio/video), as required 6. Level of Participant Engagement You will be asked to indicate the level of engagement anticipated in order for participants to get the most out of your session as follows: a. Minimal engagement (lecture with questions but minimal participation) b. Moderate engagement (interactive lecture with group participation) c. Highly interactive (facilitated presentation with high group participation and interaction or collaboration)

Keywords/Tags Please provide 3-5 descriptors that can be used to tag your session to create a search feature for the conference sessions (i.e. augmented reality, collaborative learning; best practices, etc.). Sample Tags Below is a list of sample tags, which can be used to describe your proposed sessions; however, presenters are free to select custom keywords/tags that are appropriate for their own topic(s).
