3 Middle School Course Offerings Sixth Grade Language Arts 6 (Year Long) In this virtual-blended course, students will read and analyze a variety of literature, including short stories, poetry, and novels. Students will learn to write in various styles including, but not limited to description, comparison and contrast, and narration. In addition, students will gain a better understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and note-taking skills. The STAR formative reading assessment will be given three times throughout the school year to monitor growth in reading fluency and comprehension. Sixth Grade Language Arts 6 Math 6 Science 6 Social Studies 6 Generation Me Computer Basics /Keyboarding Math 6 (Year Long) This course will provide students with opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge of number manipulation by applying them to real world scenarios. Student objectives include working with decimals, integers, fractions, ratios, and percents. Students will also work with variables, expressions, equations, and inequalities, as well as geometry and measurement. Science 6 (Year Long) This course provides an introduction to science skills including calculating in the metric system. Students will focus on Life Science topics including plants, body systems, ecology, and environmental issues. Social Studies 6 (Year Long) From ancient Mesopotamia to China and its ancient dynasties, different civilizations left their mark on history. They also left their mark on how we live today. In this course, students will take a deeper look into ancient world civilizations and have an opportunity to use 21 st century skills to teach their own lessons. Generation Me (Year Long) Students will take a deeper look into their heredity, culture, and lifestyle. They will use this information to explore future life skills and career opportunities. Computer Basics/Keyboarding (Year Long) Student will use google applications to learn good computer file organization, basic documents, spreadsheets and presentation software. Creating and submitting files for assignments. Students will also practice good keyboarding skills using an online keyboarding app. Page 2/6

4 Seventh Grade English 7 (Year Long) In this virtual-blended course, students will read and analyze a variety of literature, including short stories, poetry, and novels. Seventh Grade English 7 Math 7 Science 7 Social Studies 7 Kansas History Physical Education Generation Me Math 7 (Year Long) This course gives students opportunities to create, investigate, and demonstrate knowledge of math. Students will become proficient in operations with integers, decimals, fractions, ratios and percents. Math 7 delves deep into equations, inequalities, and graphing on the coordinate plane. Students will also work with geometry, probability and data analysis. Science 7 (Year Long) This course provides an introduction to science skills including calculating in the metric system. Students will focus on Physical Science topics including chemistry, forces, energy, sound, and light. Social Studies 7 (Year Long) In this course, students will research the cultural and natural landscapes of different regions around the world. First semester, students will have an opportunity to create their own country and analyze the interactions of differing cultures around the world. Second semester, students will have an opportunity to take a deeper look into the specific geography around us, offering a multicultural understanding to the world s diverse people and places. Kansas History (Spring Semester) In this course, students will learn about the geography of Kansas, the culture of Native Americans who have inhabited the land, and early settlements. Important aspects of the state s history will be covered, including the Missouri Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas- Nebraska Act. The early government of Kansas will also be discussed, in addition to the Progressive Movement and the state s history during World War I and World War II. Students will learn about the landmark Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education, and the significance of the Court s decision on racial segregation in public schools. The course ends with a look at the state of Kansas today. Physical Education (Fall Semester) Students will be required to participate in physical activity and to submit a weekly log documenting that activity and time spent. Generation Me (Year Long) Students will take a deeper look into their heredity, culture, and lifestyle. They will use this information to explore future life skills and career opportunities. 5 Eighth Grade English 8 (Year Long) In this virtual-blended course, students will read and analyze a variety of literature, including short stories, poetry, and novels. Students will learn to write in various styles including but not limited to expository, persuasion, and research. In addition, students will gain a better understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and note-taking skills. The STAR formative reading assessment will be given three times throughout the school year to monitor growth in reading fluency and comprehension. Eighth Grade English 8 Math 8 Algebra 1 Science 8 Social Studies 8 Health Generation Me Math 8 (Year Long) This course provides students with a firm foundation to enter Algebra 1 in high school. Students spend the first semester perfecting skills with rational numbers, equations, inequalities, functions, and systems of linear equations. The second semester focuses on data analysis, geometry, and measurement. Algebra I (Year Long) Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation This course contains the basic knowledge students need for all high school math courses. Students will understand the practical use of algebra with multiple real-world examples Science 8 (Year Long) This course provides an introduction to science skills including calculating in the metric system. Students will focus on Earth Science topics including the solar system, earth s structure, earth s surface, water, and weather. Social Studies 8 (Year Long) In this course, students will discover that history is full of adventure, colorful characters, and complex plots. Each complex plot will be different, and will highlight an important story from our nation s past. First semester, students will have the opportunity to create their own government for the United States as a blossoming nation. Students will analyze different aspects of the government and how the people can interact within it. Second semester, students will use their 21 st century skills to create a website detailing the events leading up to the Civil War. Health (Year Long) Students will keep a weekly log of physical activity and explore diversity in sports, nutrition, health and making good choices. Generation Me (Year Long) Students will take a deeper look into their heredity, culture, and lifestyle. They will use this information to explore future life skills and career opportunities. 6 Electives Electives: The following elective classes are OPTIONAL. Some courses are offered in both 7 th and 8 th grade and can only be taken ONCE. Spanish I (Year Long) 7 th & 8 th Grade Only In this course, students will learn basic Spanish phrases and vocabulary through interactive lessons that will include images, recordings, and videos. Electives Spanish I Spanish II Orientation to Art 2-D Photography Computer Basics / Keyboarding Spanish II (Year Long) 8 th Grade Only Prerequisite: Spanish I Students must have successfully completed Spanish I before enrolling in this class. In this course, students will journey with our student traveler, Cristina, to Spain, Puerto Rico, Columbia, and Argentina. Cristina will share her experiences as students learn how to speak Spanish in many useful situations. New words and phrases will be introduced with pictures, audio clips, and videos. Students will learn how to greet people, introduce themselves, speak about their family, home, food, sports, etc., through interactive activities, reading, writing, listening, and speaking exercises. Orientation to Art 2-D (Fall Semester) 7 th & 8 th Grade Only In this course, students will experience the creative processes used by all artists. They will learn how to analyze, interpret, and evaluate art. At the end of this course, they will have a portfolio of work that demonstrates their own skill and creativity as an artist. Photography (Spring Semester) 7 th & 8 th Grade Only This course introduces students to the basics of photography, including camera functions and photo composition. Students will learn what it takes to create a good photograph and how to improve photographs of animals, people, and vacations. They will also begin working with their photographs using photo-editing software. Through a variety of assigned projects, students will engage their creativity by photographing a range of subjects and learning to see the world through the lens of their cameras.
