The final product of that research will be a power point presentation or a podcast. Students will be using class time as well as time outside of class to do research and to create their presentations, which are due on Friday, January 26 th. Words for the wise: Use your time during class to do research, take notes, and plan your response to your research question. Continue doing research, taking notes, and planning outside of class as well. NO exceptions for final product due date. Use the syllabus to plan your time. 1

(If you cannot access this website, you will find the reading in nixonland.) 2. After reading a background of the history of the Cold War, begin to research topics listed in this syllabus, and come to class prepared to use the time to do more research. 3 The Cold War From Internet Research Project Background: The Cold War, which was fought between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, lasted from This research project focuses on the years, only. Task: Create a PowerPoint Presentation or a podcast to present your research on a topic from the list below. New Expectations: 1. Your research and presentation must include analysis from both the American and Soviet perspectives of the Cold War and the specific event you research. 2. Each presentation must include at least 2 primary sources that are relevant to the topic. Procedure: 1) FIND RELIABLE WEBSITES - Use the internet to research your topic. ü Use a minimum of 4 RELIABLE internet sources. ü Wikipedia is not a reliable website because you cannot verify the credentials of the author of the article. 2) RECORD YOUR RESEARCH - Every person must record his/her research on one google doc that is shared with me please. A loss of 10 points if you do not actually take notes. Make sure you address the following areas: ü Historical Background: o What conditions and events happened before your topic that influenced your topic? ü Historical Detail: o Research the details of your topic? o What happened? o How do we know? What evidence do we have? ü Analysis: o Analyze the different issues and opinions your topic. o Look at your topic from a variety of perspectives. ü Historical Impact & Significance: o What was the impact of your event on history? o Analyze the historical significance of your event? What lessons can be learned from your event? 3) CREATE A PowerPoint Presentation to present your research. a. 10 Slide minimum (Average grade) b. Remember, this presentation is for your audience to SEE, not for you to read from. Prepare to elaborate on each slide by preparing notes that you will use to add to each slide. c. Keep your words large enough---at least size 24. d. Limit the number of words you put on a page (no more than 30) e. Avoid paragraphs and complete sentences f. Use bullet points i. Use succinct phrases instead of sentences ii. Limit each slide to 6 bullet points 3

4 iii. Each bullet has eight words or less iv. Each bullet begins with a capital letter g. Prepare notes to use when presenting (from your desks) i. at least 3 additional facts, points, or details to add for each slide h. Cite your sources using Chicago format i. Create a Bibliography slide as the last slide of your presentation. Include a list of the sources for your presentation. ii. Citations must be in alphabetical order 4) Give an effective PowerPoint Presentation - Just be yourself! a. Make eye contact b. Speak, don t read, to your audience c. Elaborate on slides d. Explain concepts SLOWLY & CLEARLY 5) Counts as 3 grades: 1 grade for presentation and 2 grades for following rubric and directions. 4

What did its launch mean for Americans? ~ In what ways did the Soviet success of sending the first human being into space, Yuri Alekseyvich Gagarin in 1961 change the Cold War? ~ What was the significance of the U.S. space program, NASA, and specifically the Apollo program ( Apollo 8 -first manned orbit of the Moon and 1969 Apollo 11 landed on the Moon and Neil Armstrong became the first man on the Moon to Americans and the Cold War? 3. The U-2 Incident, May 1960 ~ Explain the significance of the downing of a U.S. U-2 spy plane, while in Soviet airspace, to relations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. 4. The Hungarian Uprising of 1965 (Hungarian Revolution of 1965) ~ Explain the significance of the 1965 Hungarian Uprising to Soviet control over the Eastern Bloc Bay of Pigs Invasion ~ Why did the U.S. government aid a force of Cuban exiles, who had been trained by the CIA, to invade and overthrow the Communist government of Fidel Castro? ~ What was the purpose of the Bay of Pigs operation and explain why it failed. ~ What the impact of the Bay of Pigs fiasco to President John F. Kennedy s foreign policy decisions from ? 6. Fidel Castro, ~ Who was Fidel Castro and why was the U.S. federal government so interested in him? (Prime Minister and President of Cuba, ) 7. Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962 ~ What impact did the crisis have on U.S.-Soviet relations? ~ Explain the agreements between President John. F. Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev to end the missile crisis. ~ Why did this nuclear missile crisis happen and what did the American and Soviet leaders do to make sure it never happened again? 8. The Berlin Wall, 1961 ~ In what ways has the wall in Berlin, East Germany impacted the lives of people who live in both East Berlin and West Berlin? (German Democratic Republic, GDR, East Germany and the Federal Republic of Germany (popularly known as West Germany) 9. President Harry S Truman s containment foreign policy: ~ In what ways do the 1947 Marshall Plan and the 1947 Truman Doctrine reflect the goals of Truman s containment policy? 10. The nuclear arms race ~ Explain the contributions of both American and Soviet political and military officials to the creation of the Cold War nuclear arms race. 5
