1 English IV Syllabus Mrs. Walters Crawford High School It is my desire that your experience in my classroom will help to prepare you for that place where your deep gladness and the world s deep hunger meet. Frederick Buechner The supplies you will need for this class include the following: a 3-ring binder, five dividers, blue or black pen, pencil, red pen, and Crayola brand classic color markers. Your daily assignments are due on the indicated date at the beginning of class. Sometimes you will finish the work in class the day before, but your responsibility is to have the assignment completed on the due date. If you have an excused absence on the day of the due date or the day before, you will turn in the work without penalty until the third day after the due date. If you are absent for a school-related activity, your work is due on the second day after you return to class. Otherwise, late work will be penalized 20 points when it is turned in. Always follow the directions in the textbook unless your assignment sheet specifically gives other directions. The heading of your paper should include your complete name, the course name English IV, and the date. Place on either the right or left side. The top line of your paper should reflect the nature of the assignment or page numbers from the textbook. You may not use tickets to waive any writing assignment: paragraph or essay. Test grades for the first grading period will include test over A Raisin in the Sun, The Glass Menagerie, 2 vocabulary tests, and a sentence structure test. August Fri. 25 Read through p. 450 of the play A Raisin in the Sun. Mon. 28 Read through p. 465 of the play. Tues. 29 Read through p. 480 of the play. On a worksheet you will identify the part of speech of words in sentences and the subject and predicate in the sentences. Wed. 30 Read through p. 495 of the play. Write a 100-word paragraph that responds to the following question: Why is Walter unhappy about Mama s purchase of a house? Include approximately 20 words from the play to support your answer. Thurs. 31 Read through p In class, you will work on Unit 1 vocabulary exercises. September Fri. 1 Read through p. 525.

2 Mon. 4 - holiday Tues. 5 Finish the play. On a worksheet you will identify the part of speech of words in sentences and the subject and predicate in the sentences. Wed. 6 Be ready for a test over A Raisin in the Sun. Thurs. 7 Diagram 8 sentences, demonstrating sentence patterns 1 and 2. The diagramming must be in color. Fri. 8 - Diagram 8 sentences, demonstrating sentence patterns 1, 2, and 3. The diagramming must be in color. Mon. 11 Diagram 8 sentences demonstrating sentence patterns 4 and 5. Diagramming must be in color. Tues. 12 Study for Unit 1 vocabulary test. Wed. 13 Read through scene 3 of The Glass Menagerie, pp and write a 100-word paragraph that responds to the following prompt: explain Tom s internal conflict about Laura. Thurs Read through scene 4 on p Write 8 compound sentences. Use different conjunctions; use 4 coordinating conjunctions and 4 adverbial conjunctions. The sentences should make a comment on the play or the characters. Fri. 15 Diagram 8 sentences. Mon. 18 Finish scene 5 on p. 118 of The Glass Menagerie. Tues. 19 Complete ex. 3 on p. 444 and diagram 4 sentences from a handout (appositive phrases). Wed Read through scene 6 on p. 131 and diagram 6 sentences that demonstrate appositive phrases. Thurs. 21 Read to the bottom of p Fri. 22 Diagram 6 sentences. In class, you will work on Unit 2 vocabulary exercises. Mon Diagram 6 sentences; also, write 5 original sentences that have at least 10 words each and label the sentence as to pattern. Create 5 different sentence patterns. In class, you will work on Unit 2 vocabulary exercises. Tues Finish reading the play The Glass Menagerie.

3 Wed. 27 Study for Unit 2 vocabulary quiz and a test over the play. Thurs. 28 Study for a test over the 6 sentence patterns and appositive phrases. September Fri. 29 no assignment Tests for the second six-weeks period include 2 vocabulary tests, a composition, sentence structure test, and folder. October Mon. 2 Complete ex. 11 on p. 449 in your grammar book (participial phrases); also, diagram 6 sentences. Tues. 3 - Diagram 6 sentences from a handout (participial phrases). Wed. 4 no assignment; in class, you will work on Unit 3 vocabulary exercises. Thurs. 5 - Read the first half of chapter 1 in Lord of the Flies. Fri. 6 Study for Unit 3 vocabulary test. Also, while considering a cause\effect essay, write a good thesis statement that includes an essay map; following are some possible topics: 1. Explain why many couples are choosing to live together before marriage. 2. Living together before marriage what is the effect on the couple and society? 3. What is the effect of family vacations on family relationships? 4. What is causing world climate change today? 5. How do digital social networks affect real life communication? 6. How does modern technological progress affect children? 7. What are the effects of student involvement in extra-curricular activities? 8. Why has depression become one of the most wide-spread illnesses? 9. Explain the effects of stress on students who both study and work. 10. What is causing the drug addiction epidemic in the United States? 11. What is the reason for the popularity of movies based on comic books? 12. What causes video games addiction? 13. What are the effects of video games addiction? 14. What would be the effect on society if the first two years of college were free? 15. What would be the effect of legalizing marijuana in Texas? 16. How will your personal career choice affect your future? 17. What forces are pointing you toward a particular career? You may also choose your own topic, but be sure to focus on a cause/effect relationship in

Mon. 9 holiday Tues. 10 Finish chapter 1 in LF; write a 100-word paragraph that responds to the following question: Why does Ralph tell the other boys Piggy s nickname and reject him as a member of the group that scouts the island? Include approximately 20 words of direct quotes to support your answer. Also, your paragraph must include at least one participial phrase. Wed. 11 Bring to class 300 words of rough draft for a cause/effect composition. Your final copy must be at least 400 words. Thurs Read the first half of chapter 2 in LF; In class, you will take notes on gerund phrases. Fri. 13 Finish chapter 2 of LF; diagram 8 sentences that demonstrate gerund phrases. Mon. 16 no assignment; in class, you will work on Unit 4 vocabulary exercises. Tues. 17 Final copy of composition (400 words) is due. You should turn in the prewriting, rough draft, and final copy at the end of the period. Your paper should include at least two appositive phrases and two participial phrases. Underline the appositive phrases in blue, the participial phrase in green. Wed. 18 Diagram 8 sentences, demonstrating participial phrases and gerund phrases. Thurs. 19 Read chapter 3 of Lord of the Flies. Fri Read the first half of chapter 4 of Lord of the Flies. Folder is due. Mon. 23 Diagram 6 sentences; finish chapter 4 of LF. Tues. 24 Read chapter 5 of LF and write a 100-word paragraph that responds to the following question: Why does Ralph now think about his first days on the island as part of a brighter childhood? Include approximately 30 words of direct quotes to support your answer. Also, your paragraph must include at least 1 appositive phrase and 1 participial phrase. Wed. 25 Read chapter 6 of LF and create 4 sentences that demonstrate participial and gerund phrases. The sentences should be at least 12 words in length. Thurs. 26 Read chapter 7 of LF and write a 100-word paragraph that responds to the following question: What is the symbolic significance of the destruction of Piggy s spectacles? Your response should include at least 2 appositive phrases. Fri. 27 Study for Unit 4 vocabulary quiz. In class, you will correct your cause/effect
