1 Meadow View Elementary Classroom Rules and School Expectations 1. Be in assigned seats and ready to work when class begins. 2. Have paper, pencils, books, and completed assignments every day. 3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 4. No swearing, cruel teasing, rude gestures, or put-downs. 5. Follow directions of all individuals in authority. Procedures for Violations of our School Expectations Phase I: Phase II: Phase III: Phase IV: Phase V: The adult in authority will address concerns with those who do not meet expectations. The adult in authority will contact parents when expectations are not met during Phase I. A conferences with the principal, the adult in authority, and the student will be scheduled when expectations are not met during Phase II. A conference with the parent(s), principal, staff member and student will be scheduled when expectations are not met under Phase III. The principal will take the necessary action deemed appropriate to resolve noncompliance with expectations. SEVERE CLAUSE: Serious violations and offenses will be dealt with accordingly. Fighting, sexual harassment, bullying, property damage, etc. will be dealt with immediately by the school principal. 1

Promoting a Positive Environment (Chips) To promote a positive classroom climate, each student will be expected to follow the classroom rules and expectations listed within the student handbook. It is important to us, to focus on the positive actions in our classrooms; therefore, each student will be given 15 chips at the beginning of the week. Students who choose not to follow classroom rules, which includes incomplete assignments, will Throw One In to a can located in each of our classrooms. Chips will be returned on the following Monday, and the process will be repeated. At the end of the week, chips will be counted and documented. The individual s total points for the week will be recorded in their planner. (Look on the bottom far right side that is marked Sat./Sun to see points earned.) Students will need a minimum of 50 chips for each four week period in order to participate in a socialization activity (Chip Events) designed to motivate and reward appropriate classroom behavior by earning weekly points. These events give us the opportunity to spend quality time with students who choose to meet our class expectations. Students may bring a drink and snack on the days of Chip Events. The following will occur with students who have 9 or fewer chips in a given week: First Occurrence of Single Digit Chips minutes - after school detention Second Occurrence of Single Digit Chips...1 hour - after school detention Third Occurrence of Single Digit Chips... In School Suspension Failure to report to detention will result in ISS. All students will start with a clean slate at the beginning of each quarter. 2

3 Morning Procedures: School begins at 8:25 a.m. Enter the classroom quietly and in an orderly fashion. Take lunch count. Take all materials needed out of your backpack and hang on designated hook. (Students are not allowed to get into their backpacks during the day.) Check previous day assignments listed on the white board and in your student planner. Hand in any homework in the designated boxes. All voices need to be off when given the signal to line up for Music/PE. Switching Classes Procedures: Stand in line with all materials needed for the next class. You will not be allowed to disrupt a class by returning to your homeroom to retrieve forgotten materials and/or assignments. Exit classroom when the teacher gives the direction. When switching classes, line up on either side of the hall outside of the fifth grade classrooms. Again, voices are off during this time. When entering the class, sit down at your assigned desk and write down assignments for that class in your student planner. Going to Specials Procedures: Stand in line with all materials needed for either Music or PE. Walk single file on the right side of the hall. Enter Music and PE with voices off and wait for that teacher s directions. When returning from PE: Walk in a single line on the right side and stop for a drink break. (No more than 4 students can be allowed in the restroom at one time. No voices in the restroom or hallway.) When returning from Music: Walk in a single line on the right side of the hall and return to the classroom. Student Planner Procedures: Write assignments that have been written on the board for each subject. Copy everything WORD for WORD from the board. Highlight the assignment after it is completed. Be sure to note whether the assignments was HI (hand in), KEEP (to keep in folder/spiral notebook and grade in class), or NB (filed in 3 ring binder notebook). With your parent, discuss any assignments that are not highlighted. This is homework that needs to be completed. Planners need to be signed by a parent each evening. 3

4 Missing a School Day Procedures: You will be given one day for every day you are absent to complete your work. For example: If you are gone Monday and Tuesday, then your work would be due by 8:30 a.m. on Friday morning. Please call the office by 8:30 a.m. if your parent is planning on picking up your assignments before 3:30 p.m. on the day that you are absent. If you do not have a sibling in school that can take home your missed assignments, then you can pick up the work when you return to school. If you are anticipating an absence, then you can get the assignments when you return to school. For example: A student knows that they re going to be gone on Thursday due to a doctor s appointment will need to wait until they return to school on Friday to get the missed assignments. They can not get the assignments beforehand on Wednesday. Remember, you are responsible for your work. If you discover that you received a 0 for an assignment that you were unaware of because of an absence then you must notify the teacher within one week from when you returned to school. If you know about a Test or Quiz prior to being absent, then you will be expected to take it the day you return. You are responsible to reschedule, with the teacher, any tests or quizzes that you may have missed. This needs to be done within 2 days of returning to school. If not, they will be recorded as a zero. All absent work is to be turned in to the designated box. Completing Assignments Procedures: Put your name and number on all assignments. Put the date below your name. Then subject and page number, as needed, of the assignment. If the assignment says to HI, then turn it into the designated box after completing the assignment. (These are usually assignments that cannot be graded in class.) If the assignment says to KEEP, then put the assignment in the designated color folder or keep in designated spiral notebook. (These are usually assignments that can be graded in class.) If the assignment says NB, then put it in the designated notebook. Study Hall Procedures: Study hall will be held from 1:05-1:40 during band time; therefore band students will not have a study hall period during the school day. All voices are off during Study Hall. Students may score AM s, take AR tests, and check grades on Power School during this time. 4

5 Going to Lunch Procedures: Walk single file on the right side of the hall. Stand in line in the hallway. Follow directions of all individuals in authority, including staff that is monitoring students in the hallway and cafeteria. Respect all individuals in authority. Recess Procedures: Walk single file on the right side of the hall. If needed, stop and take a restroom break as you exit the building out the restroom doors. Recess rules are the same as the classroom rules; however, use good judgment in participating in athletic activities. Report any problems to the teacher that is on duty that day. Checking Grades Procedures: All grades are to be updated by noon on Monday (School Policy). All students receive a report card for each 9 week grading period. Parents who have internet access may check their child s grades on Power School or have grades ed to them through Power School. Students may get on Power School to check their grades at Study Hall. Band students may check their grades when down time occurs in their home room. AR/AM goals for the week need to be met by 3:30 p.m. each Thursday. A grade for AM will be recorded weekly and the AR grade will be updated weekly. Progress Reports will be sent home every 2 weeks and will need to be signed and returned to school if any student has a D or F. Eighth Hour Procedures: 8th Hour is held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Students who have either 2 D s or 1 F are automatically referred to 8th hour. 8th hour notices will be sent home on Friday. If a student is unable to stay for 8th hour, then they will report to the office during recess that week. Class Parties: Birthdays are an exciting time for students. Please feel free to send or bring treats for your child's birthday. Parties may begin at 2:50. 5
