1 Los Angeles Valley College Mathematics 110 Introduction to Algebraic Concepts (5 Units) Fall 2016 Instructor: Zorayr (Zorro) Nalbandyan Section#: 1353 Class Hrs: MTWTH 8:15 9:25 am Office: MS 112 Room: EST 105 Drop-in Hrs: TuTh 7:40-8:10 am; 10:55-11:25 am COURSE INFORMATION Catalog Description: This course covers topics beginning with arithmetic through beginning algebraic concepts in preparation for Elementary Algebra. Topics include operations on whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and integers; order of operations; ratios, proportions, percents, and applications; perimeter and area applications; and simple algebraic expressions and equations. Basic word problems that embody these concepts are included throughout the course. Prerequisite: None. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to perform arithmetic operations on signed numbers. Also students will be able to think analytically at a level appropriate to pre-algebra. Textbook: Pre Algebra, 7 th Edition, K. Elayn Martin-Gay Important Dates: Last day to Add or Audit Friday, 9/9/2016; Drop classes without receiving a W Sunday, 9/11/2016; Drop classes with a W Sunday, 11/20/2016. COURSE COMPONENTS & GRADING Materials needed: Textbook or e-text, 2 notebooks, pencil and eraser to be brought to class every day. Calculator: The use of a calculator is not allowed during exams and/or the final. Homework: Homework will be assigned each class in MyMathLab and submitted online. Please do your homework on time. Check the due dates periodically. Homework is an essential part of learning mathematics. Homework must be taken seriously as it will help you prepare for the exams and final. I will spend the first minutes of each class session answering homework questions. You can ask homework questions in class, consult me during posted office hours to receive individualized help or you can drop by at Math Lab in LARC 226 for FREE tutoring services. No Late Homework will be accepted under any circumstances. MyMathLab Course ID: nalbandyan77296 Quizzes: There will be surprise quizzes administered at the beginning of the class. The lowest two grades will be dropped. No makeup quiz will be given under any circumstances. Quizzes are designed to test your knowledge of the homework that has been assigned before. Exams: There will be 5 exams already scheduled on the calendar. Your lowest score will be dropped. There are no makeup exams. Final Exam: The Final Comprehensive Exam is on Wednesday Dec 16 th 10:30am-12:30pm. The final exam is an accumulation of all the homework, review sheets and tests throughout the semester so it is imperative that you learn from your mistakes by reviewing the graded tests carefully. Embedded Essential Study Skills: There will be 5 Study Skill sessions with worksheets to be completed in class. These will help you become a more successful college student. 1

2 Extra Credit Opportunities: You can participate in Math 110 Path2Success weekly workshops to practice your skills and earn 10 extra credit points for each session, not to exceed 100 points. Possible Points & Grading Scale: Homework 100 points A % Quizzes 100 points B 80-89% Exams 400 points C 70-79% Final Exam 200 points D 60-69% Study Skills Worksheets 80 points F 59% and below Total points 880 points CLASS POLICIES Attendance Policy: Students enrolled in a course who fail to attend the first class meeting may be dropped from the course by the instructor. Students who will miss the first class meeting must advise the instructor of the absence prior to the first class meeting in order to be assured that they will remain enrolled in the class. Instructors may drop a student from a class when he/she is absent for a total of six cumulative instructional hours. This does not preclude the fact that students are ultimately responsible for dropping the class should they choose to do so. Failure to do so may result in a grade of F in the class. Student Conduct: Students are expected to adhere to all district policies as described in the LAVC Schedule of Classes. All cell phones should be turned off or set on silent mode. You are expected to demonstrate respect and consideration towards your peers and instructor. Students who use the cell phone or students who persist in talking during the lecture may be removed from the class for that day. Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism is the use of others words and/or ideas without clearly acknowledging their source. When you incorporate those words and ideas into your own work, you must give credit where credit is due. Plagiarism, intentional or unintentional, is considered academic dishonesty and is not tolerated. Anyone found to be plagiarizing or cheating on assignments (e.g., copying or giving answers, using crib sheets, etc.) will (1) receive a zero (fail) on the assignment, and (2) be referred to the Vice President of Student Services for further disciplinary action, following due process.
